Subject: Fwd: eBird Report - Atlanta/Marietta CBC Section 15
, 12/20/09
From: Allison & Johnnie Greene <johnniegreene(AT)ROADRUNNER.COM>
Date: 21 Dec 2009 9:05am
Location: Atlanta/Marietta CBC Section 15
Observation date: 12/20/09
Notes: Tom and Penney Sconzo, Joseph (JR)McMillan and I covered Section 15
of the Atlanta/Marietta CBC; the boundaries were: Macland Rd on to the south,
Corner Rd to the west, Dallas Hwy (120) to the north and Casteel Rd, W.
Sandtown
Rd south of Villa Rica Rd on the east side.
Weather conditions were cloudy until around 3:00 PM, 37.4 - 47.6 degrees, winds
out of
the NE 10 - 15 MPH making the wind chill feel like it was in the 20's most of
the day.
It was a lot slower than I had hoped but that's how it goes sometimes.
By 2:00 we had 39 species; Tom, Penney, and JR needed to head out. I
was determined to get our count over 40 for the day; I looked until 5:00 then
decided to call it a day. I only added the BLACK VULTURES and MALLARDS after
4:00. Our team finished with 41 species for the day.

Eiders
From: Darlene Moore <djmoore67(AT)BELLSOUTH.NET>
Date: 21 Dec 2009 11:42am
GABOers,
Did a Christmas Bird Count this weekend, and also got a chance to see
those handsome Eiders on Sea Island.
Link to images from the weekend below, and full ebird reports follow for
all the locations birded, great to take some time off from work and spend
time in the field with new and old friends. Hope all of you are getting
out and doing some Christmas counts too, and just think we don't have to
trudge through all that snow like some do in the north!!

Subject: LOTS of Ring-Billed Ducks @ Savannah NWR 12/20
From: Steve Fox <sfox01(AT)HOTMAIL.COM>
Date: 21 Dec 2009 11:56am
Yesterday Doug Thigpen and I scoped out Savannah NWR in an attempt to
relocate the previously reported Snow Geese and a very late season Purple
Gallinule Juvi. Neither birds were spotted but we did see about ~4,000
ducks huddled on the on the north side of the refuge before entering the
drive loop. Most of them were RING-BILLED DUCKS (~80-90%), followed by
NORTHERN SHOVELERS, BLUE-WINGED TEAL, MALLARDS and even a few GREEN-WINGED
TEAL. There may have been other Duck Sp but the raft was rather large and
went back far so it was challenging to key out any others beyond what was
reported. Savannah NWR seems to remain consistent with large wintering
numbers of Ring-billed Ducks. We also noticed a flock of ~30 GLOSSY and
WHITE IBIS were foraging along a flooded trail across the street from this
spot.
The driving loop had very large numbers of COOTS and a few COMMOM MOORHEN,
followed by a few more of the above-mentioned waterfowl scattered about.
Driving down further, approximately midway down the loop, I briefly noticed
a few ducks that were very REDHEAD-ish in appearance but they literally
flew off the second I got out to take a solid look. So i'm not coutning
w/o confirming. A nice surprise was a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK close up for
about 5 minutes. I couldn't confrim what prey item it had grabbed but he
was on the ground giving us long and close-up observations. Other typical
winter and year rounders were also pressnt in average numbers. Cold but
great day to be out.

Being in the Biologist bizz, shame on me for the party foul! Tired brain

didn't coincide so apologies for the UN-political correctness on the
name. Think i'll go fishing for some "spot-tailed bass" or "white

Subject: Athens CBC - partial report
From: "Eugenia R. Thompson" <eroberthom(AT)BELLSOUTH.NET>
Date: 21 Dec 2009 3:19pm
No time for a complete report of the Athens CBC but just had to report the
highlight! The team of James Neves, Ken Blankenship, and Rachel Cass were
able to see and photograph a hummingbird coming to a feeder in Watkinsville,
Oconee County. (This is the hummer that was reported to me the week
before.) It was tentatively identified on Sat. as an immature male
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD and confirmed by experts on Sunday. This is a
first for the Athens CBC which has been held since sometime in the 1960s.
I don't know if the homeowners are willing to have hoards of visitors to see
this bird but will try to find out something.

Subject: Athens CBC - Section 10 (West Watkinsville Area)
Highlights including Ruby-throated Humminbird
From: James Neves <jamesneves(AT)GMAIL.COM>
Date: 21 Dec 2009 3:43pm
Greetings GA birders,
Ken Blankenship, Rachel Cass, Willis McCumber, and I covered "Area 10" of
the Athens CBC circle, which is the SW portion of the circle. Roughly
described, it's the area west of Hwy 15/441 (which runs through downtown
Watkinsville) to the edge of the circle (about Elder Rd. off Hog Mtn. Rd),
south of Hodges Mill, and north to just across Loop 10 to Epps Bridge
Pkwy. A major portion of our town was spent on the USDA Research Property
off of Government Station and Hog Mountain Roads, and we are very
appreciative of Clara Parker for allowing us the chance to have access to
the property. We finished the day with 62 species. I haven't had a
chance to enter the list into eBird yet, but a few highlights, in no
particular order, are below. Some of the numbers are approximated, as I
don't actually have our count list in front of me at this moment.
25 Hooded Merganser
1 Cooper's Hawk
1 Sharp-shinned Hawk
2 Red-shouldered Hawk (including one interesting, VERY pale immature bird)
6 Red-tailed Hawk
2 American Kestrel
3 Wilson's Snipe
1 Eastern Screech Owl (Gray Phase)
2 Great Horned Owl (apparent breeding pair)
1 RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD (at a private residence)
1 Brown Creeper
12 Golden-crowned Kinglet
14 Ruby-crowned Kinglet
105 American Pipit
1 Blue-headed Vireo
2 Pine Warbler
1 House Wren
135 Savannah Sparrow
140 Chipping Sparrow
85 Song Sparrow
1 Swamp Sparrow
11 Dark-eyed Junco (Slate-colored)
The RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, of course, was the biggest highlight of the
day, as Eugenia Thompson has already indicated.
Happy birding and good CBC'ing!

Date: 21 Dec 2009 4:56pm
After a week of reading about Lapland Longspurs in Cartersville, I decided =
to get in the car and drive over there from Athens. Lucky me - they were s=
till there!
In addition to a new lifer, I got a bonus of over a hundred Sandhill Cranes=
in a pasture at the intersection of Brandon Farm and Taff Roads. Most wer=
e on the side of the hill, but three of them were standing on top of the hi=
ll silhouetted against the sky, showing off their display postures. First =
they would flap up into the air just off the ground, then land and lower th=
eir necks to the ground and open their long beaks towards each other. It w=
as like watching a puppet show!
It was my first time to cruise the infamous Bartow County Loop, but won't b=
e the last...

I was able to take a few pictures of a possible Greater White-Fronted/Canada
Goose hybrid. Some have suggested that it may be a domestic Graylag
(Barnyard)/Canada hybrid. I am not convinced. Pics can be found at my flickr
site. http://flickr.com/photos/fleetphotos/4203705793/
Picture quality is poor but good enough for a proper identification. Sorry for
the earlier post for those of you that are not familiar with ABA codes. I was
simply in the field sending a post from my cell phone. To reiterate I saw 1
female Redhead, 1 Bufflehead, 5 Lesser Scaup, and several raptors including a
Cooper's Hawk, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Red-Shouldered Hawk, and
American Kestrel.

Subject: Marietta/Atlanta CBC Highlights
From: Bob Zaremba <bobzarem(AT)BELLSOUTH.NET>
Date: 21 Dec 2009 8:42pm
The Marietta CBC was held yesterday in less than perfect conditions. The
day was cloudy, windy and cold for most of the day and we even have some
snow flurries! Given the challenging conditions, all the participants did
a great job. I have not yet received all the results from each area but it
looks like we tallied about 86 species. There were no major surprises but
we did pick up a few good birds for the day;
Horned Grebe - 2 were on Lake Acworth most of the day
Ducks - generally low counts every where in the count circle
Northern Harrier - at least 2 were counted
American Kestrel - just 1 still hanging around
Wild Turkey - several groups found small numbers, seems to be increasing
Virginia Rail - One very friendly rail in KMT marsh
Sandhill Crane - several groups had good counts, highest being 550!
Wilson's Snipe - several in the marsh
American Woodcock - a nice count in the KMT marsh, and several along
Alatoona Creek
Owls - low numbers of all three expected species
Blue-headed Vireo - just 1!
Red-breasted Nuthatch - 1! The one in our yard made a brief appearance on
count day
Brown Creeper - just 1
American Pipit - only two groups reported any
Cedar Waxwings - good counts from several teams
Orange-crowned Warbler - 2
Savannah Sparrow - just one team had 7, getting hard to find
Fox Sparrow - several teams reported them, KMT marsh had the high count of
13, several actually singing the full song at day break!
Rusty Blackbird - one group had a flock
Missing in Action:
Red-headed Woodpecker - getting really hard to find
Pine Siskin & Purple Finch - no winter finches at all anywhere.
Common Yellowthroat - still holding out hope for this one with several teams
Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday!

Subject: Answering an important question in ebird
From: Joel McNeal <j.mcneal(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 21 Dec 2009 10:32pm
Hey folks,
Those of you who have used ebird are already familiar with the following
question that shows up at the top of where you enter your list of species:
"Are you submitting a complete checklist of the birds you were able to identify
to the best of your ability?"
While the total number of ebird users and checklists submitted per month
continue to grow, there remains a large discrepancy between the total checklists
submitted and the number of those that are marked as 'complete' checklists.
The notion of a complete checklist is a bit misleading, as a 'complete' list
doesn't necessarily mean you counted every last individual bird. Even if you
mark an 'X' for a species (i.e. if you know you saw cardinals but can't come up
with even a rough estimate of their numbers), you should still answer 'Yes' to
the above question so long as you're reporting every species you were able to
identify on that birding trip. If you couldn't identify a bird or had to enter
it as 'blackbird sp.', etc., you should still mark your checklist as complete.
The ONLY time you should answer 'No' to the complete checklist question is when
you purposely LEAVE OFF species that were seen that day. Such instances might
include entering a historic record of a rare species where you know the date and
location you saw that species but have no data on everything else that you saw
at that location that day. Some people purposely leave off House Sparrows and
Starlings when submitting lists, but tracking changes in their populations and
distributions is valuable for interpreting their effects on our native species.
Why is it so important to answer 'Yes' to the complete checklist question? A
good example is the upcoming Rusty Blackbird Blitz. If you don't see Rusty
Blackbirds at a given spot and acknowledge that you are reporting all the
species you could identify that day, it is a valuable data point to show that
Rusty Blackbirds were NOT at that location at that time on that day. If you
indicate your checklist is not complete, it is ambiguous as to whether you might
have seen Rusty Blackbirds or not among the species you didn't include, and
your list becomes much less valuable to folks studying Rusty Blackbirds.
So keep entering those ebird lists, and please check 'Yes' as the answer to that
important question unless you are purposely excluding species you definitely
saw or heard.
Good ebirding,
Joel McNeal

Subject: Sandhill Cranes over west cobb ( late report)
From: Vicki Williams <72064.1017(AT)COMPUSERVE.COM>
Date: 21 Dec 2009 11:50pm
During the Marietta Christmas Bird Count I observed 4 different
formations heading south
between 11:00 AM and 1:30 PM
11+ 110 + 160 + 30 = 311 Cranes
all in all it was a good CBC.
