[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: VIRUS ALERT DON'T OPEN header "ILOVEYOU"--THIS IS FOR REAL From: "James H. Barton" <redwing1986(AT)MEDIAONE.NET> Date: 4 May 2000 1:20pm Friends--I will shortly be forwarding several messages concerning the Melissa type email virus which arrives with the head ILOVEYOU. DO NOT open a message with that header, EVEN IF IT IS FROM SOMEONE YOU KNOW. Apparently the virus works like the Pretty Park virus, which sends out email broadcast from infected machines. I first learned about this threat from a woman on MassBird who got the message from Yale U. When I opened the francophone list Avimonde a few seconds later, there was an ILOVEYOU message. I immediately alerted Avimonde, as did a French subscriber. As subsequent messages will show, this threat is very real. Yours, Jim Barton redwing1986(AT)mediaone.net Cambridge, MA

Barton" <redwing1986(AT)MEDIAONE.NET> Date: 4 May 2000 1:26pm This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Friends-- the following is self explanatory. I hope it's convincing. I will forward Dori Sosensky's original message and a message from France, which provide more details on the virus. Just read them on-line. Got the below from a friend who had it: Just got an article off Bloomberg.... "I Love You" shut down the systems at Ford Motor Co. and the House of Commons. Apparently it's all over the world, spreading within networkds and wiping out random files written with Microsoft software. D At 11:29 AM 5/4/00 -0400, you wrote: > Dori-- Thanks for your warning. Hello Gang! Just received a call from Eric Jarvis. Apparently BIC has been hit with a new(?) virus that has temporarily disabled their entire e-mail system. The virus acts like Melissa and is named ILOVEYOU (something with a love letter attachment). They are using Outlook so perhaps we won't be hit quite as hard but I just wanted to send out a warning. If you receive any mail remotely related to the above subject line, please call the sender to find out if it was truly sent from them before opening the mail. If not, alert them that they may have a serious computer virus. You should not open the mail but instead delete it from your in box and empty your trash; just a precaution.
