Subject: Lesser Black-backed Gulls - Florida
From: Noel Wamer <nwamer(AT)MEDIAONE.NET>
Date: 7 Oct 2001 1:36pm
Hi,
One of the more interesting fall migration phenomena in northeastern
Florida is the passage migration of Lesser Black-backed Gulls in
late-September and October. Numbers generally are highest in mid to late
October, and decrease through the remainder of the year. One observer
reported 74 on 28 September! Today I could find only 18, but one of these
had a mantle and wing color that appeared to my eye to be as dark as an
adjacent Great Black-backed Gull. I have posted seven photographs of
various individuals seen today. The dark-backed/winged bird can be seen in
pictures 3, 4, 6, 7. Any comments will be appreciated.

Subject: BROU Taxonomic Sub-committee Status Report
From: Phil Davis <pdavis(AT)IX.NETCOM.COM>

All -
FYI. From the Surfbirds web site ... an interesting status report from the
British Ornithologists' Union Records Committee Taxonomic Sub-committee.
http://www.surfbirds.com/mb/news/bou-011001.html
Interestingly, over half of the nine "species pairs" listed deal with
species found in Maryland, and all of the species except one
(Carrion/Hooded Crow)
have been found North America ... and even it's a possibility (at least it
was when Attu was still birdable).

Subject: RFI: Gadwall bare parts
From: Martin Reid <upupa(AT)AIRMAIL.NET>
Date: 9 Oct 2001 7:58pm
Dear all,
I saw a juvenile Gadwall-type today that had an all-dark bill. Does anyone
out there have experience of non-male Gadwalls that have all-dark
bills? It appeared to be in full juvenile plumage (warm buffy tones to
lateral scaps and flank feathers); there was a male Gadwall nearby in a
mixed flock that was slightly larger, which appeared to be molting out of
eclipse, and still had the orange along the lower mandible.
Thanks in advance,
Martin
