[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Help with possible Brown Booby ID From: Steve Sosensky <Steve(AT)SOSENSKY.COM> Date: 27 Nov 2001 11:38am Hi All, On Sunday, I saw a bird flying past the Newport Beach Pier which may have been a Brown Booby. I've been reluctant to report it as I have some serious questions about the ID. When I saw it, it was far enough out that it was small in my scope at 60x, and I could not get other birders with me onto the bird. In appearance, it certainly matched all the expected field marks. The shape was moderately large and four-pointed. The head and bill were pale. The back was dark, as was the neck down to the sharp cut-off at the upper breast, after which it was white underneath. The wing linings contained a lot of white as well. My problem is that I have only seen 2 Brown Boobies previously, and have never seen one fly. I would expect a Brown Booby to fly like other boobies and gannets, a swooping, soaring flight with wings held steady, and occasional plunges into the water for food. The bird I saw was low to the water, flapping constantly like a loon or cormorant, flying in more or less a straight line. I'd appreciate any insight you can offer. TIA.
