My experience with both species is limited, but the shape of the beak
(curving below), the fairly long tail and the tail feathers becoming
noticeably shorter outwards in the upper left photo indicate Hooded
Oriole. The bird in the righthand photo also appears rather
long-tailed to me but additional views would be required.

Subject: Mystery plover in Australia
From: Ross Silcock <silcock(AT)rosssilcock.com>

Hi all:
Laurie Knight (see below) asked me to post a photo of a "white-collared"
plover photographed recently in Australia. The photo is on my website at
C:\Documents and Settings\Ross\Desktop\wrossweb\index.htm
Click on the Mar 8 update link. A serious debate is underway amongst the
Ozzies regarding its identity. I would appreciate any comments!
Thanks,
Ross

G'day Ross,
It occurs to me that you may be well placed to comment on the interestingly
plumaged plover to the right the attached photo.
Could you please provide what your impressions of bird are [simply based on
the photograph, and not taking into consideration where the photo was
taken - although a relevant point might be that the sun was overhead when
the photos were taken].
White-collared plovers are unusual here, so bearing in mind that this might
either be a common species with an aberrant or worn plumage, or might be a
blow in from a distant area, could you please indicate what you might call
it in as [along with a bit of commentary], if it turned up on a beach near
you?
Many thanks,
Regards, Laurie Knight.
