To use email addresses replace '(AT)' with '@'.
This is done to confuse the spam 'bots.

fun, different, and timely for those of us in the NE at least

w/out the names.
the URL is here:http://www.westol.com/~banding/Summer2004_babypictures.html
This site has much great arcana on molt sequences etc.. along

Hi, Doug Greenberg was wondering if someone could id this baby tern he =
recently photographed:
""During my morning constitutional dog walk at Pt. Isabel Regional =
Shoreline
in Richmond, California, this morning, I encountered this =
unusual-looking
young bird as it stood forlornly on the bluffs overlooking the rocky
shoreline of San Francisco Bay.
After a bit of head-scratching I identified it as a very young tern (or =
am I
wrong?) My initial guess is a Forster's (Sterna forsteri), largely =
because
that's the most common small tern we have in this area. But when an
off-leash dog approached it, thankfully the little thing flew off toward =
the
bay. It looked VERY small, and so I wonder if it might be a Least tern
(Sterna antillarum), a species that does nest along the eastern =
shoreline of
the Bay.
The standard field guides aren't a lot of help to me in identifying this
bird.
Can anyone help here?""

If I had found this bird in Europe, I surely would have pointed to a =
Little Tern juvenile.
So, according to me it is a juv Least Tern. Look at this Least Tern at =
an earlier stage (compare the bill):

Another juv Least Tern at a similar stage:
