[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Brookville, vulture roost From: Bill Buskirk <billb(AT)EARLHAM.EDU> Date: 7 Jan 2002 6:16am On Saturday, 5 Jan., Jim Cope and I conducted a mini-CBC (only two observers) in eastern Franklin County (centered near Possum Hollow, including Brookville, New Trenton, southern Brookville Lake). We tallied 55 species. Noteworthy: Common Loon - 1 (Brookville Lake) Black Vulture - 130 Turkey Vulture - 85 Sharp-shinned (1), Cooper's (1), Red-shouldered (1), Red-tailed (13) Hawks American Kestrel - 9 Wild Turkey - 6 Ring-billed Gull - 220 Red-headed Woodpecker - 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 4 (high number) Red-bellied Woodpecker - 40 Pileated Woodpecker - 12 Carolina Wren - 31 Eastern Bluebird - 24 (low compared to mean) Hermit Thrush - 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler - 13 Fox Sparrow - 2 Purple Finch - 7 Pine Siskin - 2 The vultures are roosting in the usual (early winter and later?), easily accessible location: Junction of SR 1 and US 52, between Brookville and Cedar Grove. The roost is in sycamores on the west side of the Whitewater River just south of the SR 1 bridge. Details: From Brookville, go south on US 52/SR 1 about 4.5 mi., turn right onto SR 1 as it diverges from US 52, cross the bridge (about 0.2 mi), turn left (south) on River Road. The roost is in the trees to your left (at the outskirts of a trailer camp). The vultures were beginning to leave the roost at 7 am, but most were still present at 8 am. They were circling on updrafts off of nearby valley walls late in the afternoon (3pm) -- nearly 200 at once, impressive sight. Interestingly, we saw only a few birds during our travels in the area the rest of the day. Bill Buskirk Professor of Biology Assoc. Director, Joseph Moore Museum Earlham College Richmond, IN 47374
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Sandhills From: Ellie Baker <EBaker1931(AT)AOL.COM> Date: 7 Jan 2002 10:40am I just received this message from a friend who lives south of Battle Creek, Michigan. Perhaps you birders in northern Indiana would be interested to know this. Ellie Baker Indianapolis Ellie: Just a note to tell you some sandhill cranes are still here, I saw 6 to 10 on Saturday, flying with some geese out of a neighbor's corn field. Never saw them winter over before, how rare is that? Sandy
