Subject: Lake Monroe
From: whitehea(AT)INDIANA.EDU
Date: 9 Jan 2002 11:18am
I made a quick trip to both Paynetown and Cutright on Lake Monroe this
morning (1/9) - fair viewing conditions - clear, little heat
distortion, but a brisk WSW wind kicked up the surface, making it very
difficult to see things on the water. Present were:
Canada Goose - 46
Mallard - 24
Common Goldeneye - 4
Bufflehead - 2
Hooded Merganser - 2
Ring-billed Gull - 50
Herring Gull - 2 (both first winter plumage)
Bald Eagle - 5 (2 adults, 3 imm {Basic I and Basic II})
A little more open water on the E side of the causeway - about 50%
open

The four geese are behind the nature center. The two Tundra's were =
behind the nature center and flew south to an area across from the =
Cobblestone Apts. This is on Dandy Trail which is the closest road on =
the east side of the reservoir and is about four blocks south of 56th =
Street. There is a parking spot here.Further south is a Mute Swan. Turn =
on the road beside the bait shop which is next to the marina. None of =
these three species are at the park every year.

Subject: Mich City Harbor & Dump
From: brock <kj.brock(AT)ATTBI.COM>
Date: 9 Jan 2002 4:45pm
The 54 degree temperature lured me out today. I visited Michigan
City Harbor and the LaPorte County landfill. Gull numbers were
up considerably compared to last Saturday. Herring Gull counts
were 1500 at the harbor and 1000 at the dump.
Despite the good gull numbers there were precious few "good" gulls.
Indeed, my singular highlight was a first-year Iceland Gull at
the dump. This bird displayed very light plumage, a small all black
bill, and pure white primaries.
