Subject: Info on east coast pelagic trips
From: Jim Hengeveld <jhengeve(AT)INDIANA.EDU>
Date: 10 Jan 2002 10:23am
I realize that this is far outside the area, but it may be of
interest to some readers. Brian Patteson recently e-mailed me to let
me know that he still needs participants for his winter pelagic trips
from Virginia and North Carolina. He said that sign-ups are way down
from the last couple of years. He has trips from Virginia Beach on
Feb. 2(3) and 9(10) and trips from Hatteras, NC on Jan. 26(27), Feb.
16(17), Feb. 17/18, and March 9(10). Most of these trips are
scheduled for Saturdays with Sunday weather dates. Great Skua is
likely to be seen, and other reasonable possibilities include No.
Fulmar, Manx Shearwater, Red Phalarope, BL Kittiwake,
Dovekie, Razorbill, and At. Puffin. A Feb.1999 trip found a
Black-browed Albatross off Virginia, and a Feb. 2000 Hatteras trip
found a Yellow-nosed Albatross. More details about these trips can be
found on Brian's website at http://www.patteson.com/, or you can call
Brian at (252) 986-1363. He also said that he still has plenty of
space on trips this spring and summer.

Subject: Lapland Longspurs--Snow Bunting
From: murray <ccmurray(AT)WICO.NET>
Date: 10 Jan 2002 6:11pm
Tippecanoe Co., 1300S & 925E, south of Clarks Hill
At this intersection found over 100 birds flying around, lots of
whistles and rattles. Birds on both sides of the roads in the three
fields. Most of these birds were Lapland Longspurs and at least one Snow
Bunting. I did hear a few Horned Larks in the fields, but at this time I
am not finding large flocks of Horned Larks. Most of the Horned Larks I
have seen lately are pairs. The birds eventually settled down in the
corn stubble in the northeast field.
