[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: snowy owl update From: George.McLaren(AT)INDYSTAR.COM Date: 11 Jan 2002 1:51pm Some of you may have heard about the snowy owl that was spotted in Downtown Indy yesterday. As a result of the story I wrote about it (link below), I have received several other reports which I'm passing along. One was from Indianapolis International Airport from a couple of weeks ago. The owl stayed around several days before leaving. I have also received a couple of reports about a snowy owl in Shelby County in recent weeks. Also, there has been plenty of discussion of owls around the Tippecanoe-White county areas and Barny Dunning told me yesterday there were a total of four snowy owls seen in those vicinities in recent weeks. Incidentally, I have heard nothing in the past 24 hours on the Downtown Indy owl. It was last seen heading north from the SW corner of Downtown toward IUPUI, but that was at about 11 a.m. on Thursday. On a different subject, John Castrale from the DNR said the winter bald eagle count this year tallied the second-highest recorded number for Indiana; a story on that will be in the Star tomorrow. Perhaps John (hint, hint) will post some more details here soon. George McLaren The Indianapolis Star snowy owl story: http://www.indystar.com/article.php?snowy11.html,news
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Snow Goose, Indy From: Larry Peavler <lpeavler(AT)HOME.COM> Date: 11 Jan 2002 2:15pm This one bird is with Canada's on the east side of Georgetown Road just = south of 52nd Street. There is a small corn field there. Larry Peavler Indianapolis,IN.
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: golden eagles From: John Castrale <jcastrale(AT)DNR.STATE.IN.US> Date: 11 Jan 2002 2:47pm While flying the midwinter eagle survey this week, I noted 3 golden eagles: an adult and an immature along Sugar Creek (sites probably not easily accessible from the ground) and an immature at Patoka Lake. I'll report bald eagle numbers and locations when I compile the info next week. John Castrale
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Re: snowy owl update From: Craig Seward <sewardce(AT)HOTMAIL.COM> Date: 11 Jan 2002 3:41pm Hello All, I guess I'll pass along some snowy owl lore. While visiting in Markle, IN(Wells County)a few weeks ago I was told of the presence of a Snowy Owl in the area. My host drove me to the area where it was seen previously, but I did not see it. I was also told that an article about the owl appeared in the Bluffton newspaper, though I failed to find it via a search of the paper's website. For those interested here are my poor directions: From "Downtown" Markle proceed South down the road that crosses the Wabash; take the first Left and proceed East to the first four-way stop; Turn right and proceed approx. .25 mile where the homes fade from the roadside and you are confronted with a wide expanse of agricultural fields. this is the supposed spot!(Sorry, my Delorme is not handy). [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Bald Eagle From: Ed Hopkins <ed_hopkins(AT)COMPUSERVE.COM> Date: 11 Jan 2002 4:48pm Going back to work I had an immature Bald Eagle along the Wabash Rive= r in a tree at the Williamsburg Apartments just north of the Harrison Bridg= e. That is just north of downtown Lafayette/W Lafayette. Ed Hopkins W Lafayette
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Florida whooping cranes From: Connie Doud <ced(AT)NETUSA1.NET> Date: 11 Jan 2002 5:48pm Steve Doud, Jerry Sweeten, and Sarah Sweeten spotted 2 adult whooping cranes this morning on the Florida Turnpike between mile markers 213 and 214 near Lake Kissimmee. They are headed to the Bahamas Island of Andros and hope to do a bird count there as well as aquatic studies. A note has gone to John Castrale to see if he thinks this could be part of the group that followed the plane down or if they might be permanent residents. (Sarah is a Purdue junior who has been taking classes in Australia and just won points from her dad for the find!) Connie Doud
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Lake Monroe birding 1/11, Eastern Phoebe From: michael clarke <miclarke(AT)BLOOMINGTON.IN.US> Date: 11 Jan 2002 6:30pm A pretty good day of birding today at various Lake Monroe spots. Nothing earth shattering, but lots of "year" birds for me. The better birds included: Paynetown (a.m.): Hooded Merganser-25 (in the mouth of the Moore's Ck. inlet) Pied-billed Grebe-1 immature Bald Eagle-1 Ring-billed Gull-80 (Don Whitehead also had several Bonaparte's Gull here this morning) American Robin-4 Brown Creeper-1 Common Goldeneye-1 Killdeer-1 Belted Kingfisher-1 Fairfax (midday): American Coot-15 Pied-billed Grebe-5 Turkey Vulture-4 adult Bald Eagle-1 Cooper's Hawk-1 Cutright (p.m.): Bald Eagle-5 (2 adult, 3 immature) Ruffed Grouse-1 flushed from the road near the last bend in the Cutright drive. EASTERN PHOEBE-1 at the end of the drive near the pontoon marina, showed up in response to some pishing, posed nicely on a "no parking" sign.
