Subject: Northern Goshawk
From: Lee Sterrenburg <sterren(AT)INDIANA.EDU>
Date: 20 Jan 2002 10:44am
Yesterday (January 19, 2002), Jim Hengeveld, Susan Hengeveld, and I birded
the lakefront with the Brock group. As Ken reported earlier on IN-BIRD,
the weather and the gulls were great. We stayed until after the West
Beach visit at 2:00 PM. We then headed south to White County to try for
the Snowy Owl reported by Barny Dunning a week and a half ago. Exiting I
65 at Remington, we overlanded south on county roads down to highway 18.
We did not find a Snowy Owl. Our highlight was an immature NORTHERN
GOSHAWK.
The raptor results for the trip south to Bloomington:
NORTHERN GOSHAWK (1 imm - in western White County on highway 18, just east
of CR 1000 W, DeLorme p. 31, C-9)
Red-tailed Hawk (29)
Rough-legged Hawk (3 - two dark morph adults in Benton Co. and one light
morph in White Co.)
American Kestrel (15)
Great Horned Owl (1 - north of Burma Road in Monroe Co.)
We first saw the N. Goshawk perched on a low fencepost about 15 yards from
the road. Susan spotted it. We looked at the sitting bird and then
watched it fly low across a field, quartering away from us. The bird was
large; it was like a Red-tailed Hawk in size but with a long and
relatively broad accipiter tail. We had good looks at the prominent light
superciliary line, the very heavy and extensive streaking on the
undersides, the long and broad tail (that flared open even wider in
flight), white terminal tip on the tail, brown overall upperparts, and
prominent pale bar on the upperwing greater coverts when seen in flight.
Susan also saw picked out the zig-zag patterning on the tail bands. The
flight was striking. The flight was unlike the wingy, relatively loose
jointed, rapidly alternating sets of flapping-and-gliding of a Cooper's
Hawk. This bird took off and blasted forcefully across a field. It would
give a few very powerful, stiff-winged flaps, then glide for an amazingly
long way, even though flying low, only two or three feet off the ground.
It held its long wings in a more pointed shape when doing those long
glides. We remarked that the bird almost flew like a gyrfalcon when
swooping across the field. The goshawk was flying in a southwest
direction when we last saw it.

From: Ed Hopkins <ed_hopkins(AT)COMPUSERVE.COM>
Date: 20 Jan 2002 1:24pm
The Harris' Sparrow was seen at 9:00-9:05 AM, Sunday Morning. I didn't=
see any seed. Therefore, I put out a 1-2 lb. of sunflower seed for anyon=
e
that follows.
Mid-week Barny Dunning got a call saying that a Snow Owl had been kill =
at
one of the I-65 interchanges in White Co. Dan Scheiman, one of his
graduate students, recovered a 10X10" zip-lock freezer bag full of
feathers, but the owl had been removed before he got there.

Subject: Harris's Sp
From: "Stephen L. Elliott" <slelliott(AT)unidial.com>
Date: 20 Jan 2002 5:29pm
I saw the Harris's Sparrow today at 1:40 and again at 2:20. I spread
another bucket of seed down along the road. Maybe our bird will
continue to stay for those who have not seen yet.
Today's feeding flock was the largest I've seen there, approaching 40
birds. At one time my scope view included Cardinals, Tree Sp, Song Sp,
Junco, on the road, a Chickadee and a Downy in the road side brush in
the background, and maybe the Harris's.

Thanks to Alan Bruner for his excellent leadership on
the Turkey Run Eagle Watch. Thanks also to Dan Leach
for encouraging people to participate. It gathered at
least 3 grateful people from West Lafayette.
We saw 16 Bald Eagles and 3 nests, 29 different
species of birds and a wonderful opportunity to see,
study and hear Lapland Longspurs. It was a beautiful
day with excellent company.

Subject: RPT-MI/IL-20Jan02
From: "David C. Chaffin" <Davchaffin(AT)AOL.COM>
Date: 20 Jan 2002 8:56pm
Birders,
Many thanks to those folks who have helped me to track down a few things the
past week.
Started the am getting the BTG warbler nr Centerville(St Joseph Co), along
with Cooper's and pine siskin, all three new for MI. John and Vicky wer
great hosts, and they were glad to add the 32nd species to their running list
of seen during their special warbler visit. I hope the state organization
can recognize them for the whole birding community.
Went to Mich City where 2 Harleys cooperated, along with 5 Rredheads(4m,f),
both new for MI. Others included abt 65 buffleheads, 3 L scaup, 4 C
goldeneye, mallards-not counted, 2 belted Kingfishers, herring and
ring-billed gulls. It was a treat to show a young birder from Aurora named
Dawn her lifer Harley. It makes one feel good to young birders coming on to
replace some of us graybeards. So much for the good morning in MI. Now for
the disaster in IL.
Drove directly to Lyon Woods where Eric Lundquist had provided me with
excellent instructions. The line across the path was there, the line ended
at the middle tree(apparently it had moved one tree closer to the path), the
whitewash, fur, and pellets were there, but no bird. Stayed from 2:15-4pm,
and during the time, 3 different groups or individualsa came to look also.
Zero.
Dawn had told me about a good place for SE owl, so I headed to Naperville,
where I met Mike Madsen and Al. No luck on the owl that has been at the 75th
st and Bppk location, name escapes me now of the reserve.
Am going to saw-whet in the am at Morton. Will it be an owl strikeout?
