I live straight west of Indianapolis, west of Danville and US 36. Only the second flock I have seen all fall or winter! Judie Hansen
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Middlefork Reservoir From: Chuck Taggert <warrech(AT)EARLHAM.EDU> Date: 23 Jan 2002 6:12pm Hey Guys, Here's a report of Middlefork Reservoir and Springwood Park. Dan Greene and I went out today at about one this afternoon and got a great variety of birds at both locations. I got two life birds today.* The most noticeable were the Richardson's Geese and the Common Goldeneye which were both reported at the same location the other day. The CG reported the other day however was apparently male, indicating different birds. I suggest anyone with free time to go see the Richardson's Geese because of the rarity of this sighting here. The birds are at the south end of the lake but BEWARE apparently the dam is off limits even outside of the No Trespassing area. The police asked us to stay back from that area because it "is under surveillance." Whatever that means. (It is the best view of the geese though- "wink-wink") Middlefork Reservoir 1-23-02, 1:00-2:00pm Canada Goose- Common Race- ~2000 RICHARDSON'S Race*- 4 (possibly 6- two birds may have been seen twice, very noticeable from the rest of the geese when directly next to the Common's but are easily lost in the masses) Mallard- ~1000 American Black Duck ~ 40 Ruddy Duck- 8 Hooded Merganser- 6 COMMON GOLDENEYE*- 1 (female) Herring Gull- 1ad and 1 imm. Ring-billed Gull ~ 500 Great Blue Heron- 2 American Kestrel- 1 American Crow- 10 Cardinal- 2 Rock Dove- 2 Springwood Park 1-23-02, 2:10-2:45 Canada Goose ~125 Mallard~ 150 Gadwall- 37 American Widgeon- 6 Wood Duck- 2 Hooded Merganser- 2 American Crow- 4 Belted Kingfisher- 1 Cooper's Hawk- 1 (beautiful look at this bird, I believe from the size it to be female) Hairy Woodpecker- 1 Chris Warren Earlham College Richmond, IN
