Subject: Lake Monroe, Flatwoods area
From: whitehea(AT)INDIANA.EDU

My early morning venture to Paynetown and Cutright on Lake Monroe was
not very productive. The sharp drop in temperature generated a fair
amount of fog on the lake. Present were:
Canada Goose - 6
Common Goldeneye - 1
Hooded Merganser - 2
Ring-billed Gull - 90 (sitting on a thin film of ice off of
the launch ramp at Cutright)
Red-tailed Hawk - 1
Belted Kingfisher - 2
Killdeer - 2
Am. Robin - 14
Since the morning was so spectacular I continued on W of Ellettsville
and birded the Flatwoods area. Rather quiet there as well. Present
were:
Rough-legged Hawk - 1 (light phase)
Red-tailed Hawk - 2
Am. Kestrel - 2
E. Meadowlark - 6
Horned Lark -

Subject: Greater White-fronted Goose record count?
From: Don Gorney <dongorney(AT)YAHOO.COM>

I birded a few places in Greene and Sullivan Counties on the morning of
25 January with a few highlights of note. One highlight was one
Rough-legged Hawk, a species that seems less common this winter.
The big highlight was what may be a state maximum count for Greater
White-fronted Geese. I counted 168 Greater White-fronted Geese on Duck
Lake at the Dugger Unit of Greene-Sullivan State Forest! An amazing
sight to see so many of these geese together. I am aware of records of
up to several dozen of these birds in Indiana but I don't recall a
count this high before.
Also on Duck Lake were a number of a smaller race of Canada Goose.
