[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Re: Harris' Hawk, etc. From: David Muth <dmuth(AT)BELLSOUTH.NET> Date: 18 Jan 2001 6:26pm Rick: Can't help on the swifts. I searched briefly for the hawk this afternoon (1-18), without success, but there are plenty places difficult to view from the road that looked suitable. I did see 1 mature Bald Eagle, heard my first and only Winter wren of the season, and squeaked up a field sparrow among the usual hordes of ordinary sparrows. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Re: Vaux's From: "Michael A. Seymour" <caprimulgus(AT)EARTHLINK.NET> Date: 18 Jan 2001 6:47pm Rick and others, I searched for the swifts on 3 and 4 January without success. Other posts on LABIRD seem to indicate that the birds are gone -- last observed 2 Jan (?) by Marty Guidry. -Michael Seymour BR, LA > Labirders, > > Does anyone on the list know if either the Harris" Hawk near > Sorrento or the Vaux's Swifts in Baton Rouge have been seen > within the last couple of days? [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Check Theadvocate.com for today's Outdoor Column From: "Jay V. Huner" <jjhuner(AT)MINDSPRING.COM> Date: 18 Jan 2001 7:19pm Good evening, One of the true friends of birding in Louisiana is The Advocate's Outdoor Columnist Joe Macaluso - Theadvocate.com . Joe did a wonderful column on birding in the Cameron area last fall, heavily emphasized CBC's in December, and had a really great article about The Bluebonnet Swamp in Baton Rouge today. I'm pleased that Joe picked up on the Winter Wren - we had a discussion about this really neat bird last weekend. Check it out. Joe fully recognizes that what hunters need in terms of habitat is what all species need - HABITAT. That is why he has gone out of his way to emphasize non-consumptive wildlife use in his columns. But, like it or not, hunting and fishing are consumptive and Joe (and other outdoor writers) have to make sure that the speck, bass, deer, and duck hunters know where to go and how to catch/shoot their quarry. Regret that I seem to be the only person associated with LABIRD to pick up on this. Too bad that The Advocate doesn't capitalize on non-consumptive land use like The Advertiser and establish a column like Bill Fontenot's Advertiser column! Regards, Jay Huner PS - If you have the means and care about wildlife, go out and buy a Federal Duck Stamp and a Louisiana Duck Stamp.
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Delacroix and Yscloskey Birds From: Jennifer Coulson <Jacoulson(AT)AOL.COM> Date: 18 Jan 2001 7:36pm ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Driving back from picking up nutria meat to feed my hawks, I saw a White-tailed Kite flying overhead just N of Delacroix. Tom and I watched a young Brown Pelican do a double take when it saw a mullet jump out of the water. The pelican immediately spun around to plunge into Bayou La Loutre. We walked a marsh bordering the oyster town of Yscloskey and in a few minutes managed to flush Virginia Rails and a Sora, and heard many Clappers clapping. Sparrows included 6 or 7 Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrows and one Seaside. At that point it was raining too hard to bird. Louisiana--what a fascinating place. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Winter wrens & swallows From: Yvonne Bordelon <ylbordelon(AT)JUNO.COM> Date: 18 Jan 2001 7:54pm We've had a couple of winter wrens on our property for a couple of months. One of the tiny birds lives by the Little Tchefuncte River and creeps down among the cypress knees and under fallen logs. I saw it last week. The other one was by the creek near the house, but I haven't seen it for about 3 weeks. Today there were 5-6 swallows catching insects in the air over the pond. They had dark bluish backs and were white underneath. The tail was broad and had a slight arc. I thought I saw a touch of dark red on one. I consulted Kaufman and they look like they could be either tree swallows or cliff swallows. Every day brings new surprises. We're so glad we left the city.
