Jay, SEEM is the key word here. The majority of people on this list, I am quite sure, think/feel/and observe in the same manner that you do, but may not be as vocal about their feelings as you are. The above may be taken as a criticism by many. Offered in the spirit of keeping the peace... Thanks for the tip on the article. I do not get the Advocate and appreciate others letting me know when there is something worthwhile. Re: articles, there is a nice article describing the refurbished Couterie Woods in City Park in the Times Picayune this morning. I know that many on this list were involved in this project and I congratulate them. Hope to check it out very soon. Beth Maniscalco Thibodaux, LA (approx. 60 miles SW of New Orleans)

Wife, Jo, and I plan to plant trees tomorrow on Grand Isle if it is still on. Don't know how much help I will be as I strained my back a couple days ago. Margie Daigle, Terr. Bird Club, is also comming. Thanks, Dave Coignet David Muth wrote: > All: > > Just another reminder that this Saturday, Jan. 20, the Nature Conservancy > and its Grand Isle partners will be conducting another tree planting on the > Exxon property, beginning at 10:00 a.m. > > Good birding, a good time, and a great cause. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Western Tanager From: Peggy Siegert <PEGSIEGERT(AT)CS.COM> Date: 19 Jan 2001 3:09pm Labirders, The female Western Tanager, present since 12/31, was a complete no-show yesterday for Walter Clifton's camera. She's here and in her routine today, feeding regularly on sunflower seeds at the back platform feeder. An immature male Summer Tanager is favoring the peanut butter suet. Occasionally the two tanagers are on the platform feeder together, but not for long, as the western prefers to have the whole feeder to herself. Wednesday, a mixed flock of c grackles, rw blackbirds and bh cowbirds took over. I counted over 20 cowbirds. This is a high count for my yard, previous high was 3. Goldfinch numbers continue to increase daily. Waxwings and Robins, early to appear in such high numbers in our yard, have stripped just about all winter fruits except nandina. They have even been down on the ground getting berries from liriope and mature patches of monkey grass. Peggy Siegert Slidell, LA zone 8b ****************

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Re: Check Theadvocate.com for today's Outdoor Column From: "Jay V. Huner" <jjhuner(AT)MINDSPRING.COM> Date: 19 Jan 2001 5:24pm Dear Beth: The UL Lafayette Bird List is now 90 or so birds. What's the status of the Nicholls SU Bird List???? LABIRD is not supposed to be a "chat" room but it is supposed to share pertinent bird information to participants. Bill Wood was very thoughtful to provide Mary Jiminez's article from the Shreveport Times a few weeks ago. I wasn't so much "fussing" as hoping that people would follow up Bill's "lead" on referencing pertinent, net accessible, media information. Joe Mac's four articles - one from last winter/spring - help immensely to show LDWF hooks and bullets bosses that there really is a lot to non-consumptive outdoor activities. There is no need for 10 people to cite articles like Mary's and Joe's but here's hoping that there are more articles out there that we don't know exist because no one takes the time to post the information. Regards with Thanks, Jay PS - Every Bird List has to start somewhere. Hope to see a Nicholls list soon. -----Original Message----- From: Beth H. I've talked to the caterers in Alex and they will be able to handle additional people up until Friday night. Registration has been excellent and we look forward to seeing so many LOS members and guests at the meeting. So don't miss the excellent programs for Friday and Saturday night. Our own Clifton's will be showing some remarkable slides on Friday night. We are most fortunate to have Dr. George Archibald for our Saturday night program.
