Fellow Birders,
On Fridat, Jan. 19, while traveling to Pollock, La. for the Louisiana =
Native Plant Society annual meeting, we dcided to try for the Sandhill =
Cranses in Chaneyville.
Luck was with us and we found a small flock of 21 cranes in a field =
right next to the road. They were foraging and we got excellent looks =
and were treated to the sounds of their vocalizations
What a way to start a wonderful week-end!!!!!
The LNPS meeting was filled with the joy of seeing old friends, meeting =
new ones and of course getting to shop for more native plants and trees =
for our yard.=20
The speakers were so interesting and informative, we came away with a =
spirit of renewal and the anticipation of implementing the things we had =
learned.

From: "Beth H. Maniscalco" <cone-bhm(AT)NICH-NSUNET.NICH.EDU>
Date: 22 Jan 2001 9:28am
Humnetters and Labirders:
The Hummingbird Queen of Lafourche Parish has asked that I post the
results of Nancy Newfield's most recent banding trip to her yard in
the St. Charles (Raceland) area.
Nancy came on Sunday, January 21st to band the Calliope first
observed by Lisa on Friday, January 19th. Her banding total for the
day were THIRTEEN new birds and 3 recaptures.
New Bands:
1 Calliope
2 Buff-bellied
1 Black-chinned
3 Ruby-throated
6 Rufous
Recaptures:
1 Buff-bellied (originally banded in November)
1 Rufous (originally banded in December)
1 Rufous (originally banded in 1997)
This brings the total of new bands in Lisa's yard for the Winter
Hummingbird Season of 2000-2001 to THIRTY-NINE HUMMINGBIRDS.
NOTE: Lisa gave me the pleasure of posting this wonderful
information because she is having computer problems. I will gladly
pass on any congratulations to her if necessary.

I just saw a Greater White-fronted Goose at the BREC park between City Park
Lake and University Lake just off of Dalrymple.
Also, for the person requesting info on arrival dates of Purple Martins, I
also saw a male and two females on the power lines on Dalrymple between
University Lake and the small lake (whose name escapes me...). There might
be more, but thats all I saw as I drove by.

Subject: Thibodaux Area Hummingbird Totals
From: "Beth H. Maniscalco" <cone-bhm(AT)NICH-NSUNET.NICH.EDU>
Date: 22 Jan 2001 10:17am
Humnetters and Labirders:
I am preparing a report for the Terrebonne Bird Club Meeting tonight
on hummer banding activity and I thought I would share this
information with you.
Thus far, in five trips to the Thibodaux/St. Charles, Nancy Newfield,
accompanied by Linda Beall on one trip, has trapped a total of 80
birds including 7 recaptures. Breakdowns follow:
Rufous hummingbirds--30 (includes four recaptures)
Ruby-throated hummingbirds--21
Black-chinned hummingbirds--13
Buff-bellied hummingbirds--13 (includes three recaptures)
Calliope hummingbird--2
Broad-billed hummingbird--1
The largest number (39) of these birds were captured in Lisa Robichaux's yard,
but these captures represent a total of only five yards. I'd say
that the northern part of Lafourche Parish can give any locale a run
for it's money (she states with puffed up chest and look of pride
upon her face). <VBG>

Dr. Remsen, I hope this is not too much trouble, but could you post the
following message on LABIRD for me? Thanks.
The 2001 International Piping Plover Winter Census is scheduled for January
29 through February 15. Since my original appeal for volunteers I have heard
from 7 individuals that they would help. We could really use more people. If
you would like to help and haven't contacted me yet, I really need to hear
from you soon in order to get guidelines and data sheets to you. Thanks.

a parking space at the Jean Lafitte National Park yesterday, a yellow-rumped

then hopped toward the windshield, stared at me for a while, and flew off.

Subject: Blouin Lane between Thibodaux and Raceland
From: Rick Bello <spcd-rsb(AT)NICH-NSUNET.NICH.EDU>
Date: 22 Jan 2001 3:23pm
Labirders,
My thanks to Lisa Robichaux for giving me another shot at the imm. male
Calliope Hummingbird that is currently gracing her feeders (and to Beth
Maniscalco for first alerting me to the bird). Gary Worhington and I had
actually missed seeing the bird on the first day it was reported (Friday),
even after waiting and watching for quite some time. Yesterday afternoon
(Sunday, 1/21/01), however, the bird was more cooperative and I had great
looks at this lifer from literally two feet away, as well as looks at
Buff-bellied, Black-chinned, and Rufous.
Afterwards, near dusk, Lisa and I decided to walk Blouin Lane (her street)
through cane fields for about one mile to a set of crawfish ponds. Near
the ponds and along the way, we had a nice variety of birds (36 spp.),
including things like Little Blue Heron, White Ibis, Great Horned Owl,
Winter Wren, Eastern Bluebird, Cedar Waxwing, and two male Purple Martins.
This date for Purple Martin matches the earliest I have in my computer
records for the Thibodaux vicinity.

I had two Hermit Thrushes along Bayou Desiard on the ULM campus. I was
surprised to see them so close to buildings. There seems to be an increase
in the number of Am. Robins around my house. I'm not sure whether they are
more active and therefore more visible or whether more are moving into the
northern part of the state.

Subject: Bullock's Oriole
From: Alan Hohensee <hoppy(AT)STRUCTUREX.NET>
Date: 22 Jan 2001 5:06pm
LaBirders, had a male Baltimore oriole at my suet feeder on Jan. 11 (my
first winter sighting of a Baltimore since I have lived here.) Have not
been able to monitor the feeders regularly, so was not sure what was around,
other than lots of pine warblers (a couple being a brilliant yellow) and
goldfinches. Today, my wife came home at lunch to check my progress on
painting the hall and foyer and as she was leaving, I spotted the oriole on
the feeder. Pointed it out to her, as Baltimore orioles are among her
favorite birds (she is not a birder).
A little later, I saw an unfamiliar bird at the suet feeder. It was a
female Bullock's oriole. I called the wife to tell her and her response
was, "How did you see the feeder from the hall?" I tried to take some
pictures, but the battery in the camera decided Christmas had been too much.
Will try again tomorrow.
Martha Sargent's no-melt suet recipe is one of the best bird attractants I
have ever seen. The birds here love it. We use a cake a day. Commercial
suet will go untouched until it goes bad.

Labirders, here's the recipe for Martha"s suet. I have always thought
"Martha" was Martha Sargent.
1 Cup Crunchy Peanut Butter
2 Cups "Quick Cook" Oats
2 Cups Cornmeal
1 Cup Lard (NO substitutes)
1 Cup white flour
1/3 cup sugar
Melt the lard and peanut butter, then stir in remaining ingredients. Pour
into loaf pans. Store wrapped in freezer. Makes four cakes to fit square
suet feeder baskets.

I looked at the website and I think it is great. It's hard to leave the

Since I couldn't dance I did the next best thing and grabbed my guitar and
strummed along to Jambalaya about eight times.
