Earlier in the day, Vin observed a Mink at Cockeast

down Nelson's Grove Road in Lakeville, Vin's Mustelid

running across the road with incredible speed.
Subsequently, it climbed a nearby White Pine, paused
for a few seconds, and then disappeared into the
woods.

Subject: Parker River NWR Road now fully open; Concord
sightings
From: Jim Moore <epiphenomenon(AT)earthlink.net>
Date: 11 Mar 2008 7:04am
The dirt portion of the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge road is
now open all the way to Sandy Point State Reservation. The unpaved
portion was a bit muddy, but no ice or snow when I was there this afternoon.
Had a chance to do a bit of birding there and in Concord today. Some
highlights are the following:
GREAT MEADOWS NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, CONCORD (Monsen Road Area; all
the dikes were under water):
Wood Duck-8
Ring-necked Duck-30
Common Goldeneye-8 (actively courting and displaying)
Hooded Merganser-25 (actively courting and displaying)
Red-winged Blackbirds
Common Grackles
The non-bird highlight was seeing a family of muskrats sleeping one on
top of the other on the ice to stay warm. It took me awhile to figure
out what that brown furry mass was!
PARKER RIVER NWR
Northern Shrike-1
Rough-legged Hawk-1 light phase female
Horned Lark-2
Long-tailed Duck-30
Northern Pintail-3
NINE ACRE CORNER, CONCORD
Green-winged Teal-50
Northern Pintail-10
American Wigeon-10
Eastern Bluebird-3
Canada Geese-200
Good birding!

Hi All,
I've seen so many postings about barred owls this year that I thought you might
want to know about a place that is doing great work to rehabilitate them
http://www.yorkcenterforwildlife. I did some volunteering there last year and
they do great work on a shoestring budget.
This year they are inundated with injured owls, primarily barred (they've taken
in 33 so far). They are seeking financial assistance to help care for these
animals. Until March 31 there is a donor who is willing to match funds up to
$2000.
I've never posted here before but this is something positive we can do.
Thanks,
Robin

Subject: Quail and redpolls, Wellfleet 3/11
From: "Mark Faherty" <mfaherty(AT)massaudubon.org>
Date: 11 Mar 2008 4:16pm
After a winter of wondering what befell our feeder flock of quail, I finally
found them - fifteen of them in fact - skulking in a plum thicket in the
heathland behind Goose Pond. Up 10 17 used to visit the feeders daily in the
fall before they disappeared.
When I came back inside a Hoary Redpoll was at the feeders.
Also out there were 3 Green-winged Teal, 4 Black-bellied Plovers, 200 Dunlin, 30
Horned Larks, and 20 Common Redpolls.
lastly, I received a report from Saturday of 12 Bohemian Waxwings up at High
Head in Truro.

From: "Sean Williams" <seanbirder(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 11 Mar 2008 8:54pm
Hello Massbirders,
Today I birded with Ida Giriunas and Jack Stenger, visiting from Ohio,
in Newburyport. We hit Plum Island and did a bit of Cape Ann
afterwards. There was a Black-headed Gull at the wastewater treatment
plant in Newburyport. A Northern Shrike was perched at the end of the
main road at the state park, along the trail that goes to the right.
Also, 32 Green-winged Teal were present in the pool across from
parking lot 3.
We then searched for a bit for the Slaty-backed Gull without success.
However, at Niles Pond and Jodrey Pier we found 5 Glaucous Gulls and 7
Iceland Gulls. No King Eider off Back Rocks, but there were 4 Black
Guillemots.
Good birding,
Sean

At 3:45 PM today, March 11, there was a small flock of about a dozen Hooded
Mergansers moving between New and Old Ponds in Easton, on Route 106. Really
good views are possible.
Also, an old report from March 2. At about 1 PM on my way back from a
meeting, I saw three Turkey Vultures circling over Rte 128 at Rte 16, down
fairly
low.
Here in West Bridgewater, I still have a few American Tree Sparrows at my

being enforced, as there have been at least 4 arrests for trespassing
so far. By all appearances, this ban on walking Long Beach West will
be in effect for a long time.

Hello,
I've been up to my ears in work since reports of
Slaty-Backed Gull began coming from Gloucester, and so
I have not seen the bird yet. The last report I saw
was from Sunday. Does anyone know of a report from
3/11, and might it be worthwhile to have a go at it
Wed.? I'll spend the gas for this life bird if the
probability warrants.
Thank you.

PI/MA Birders,
I just got a report from Nancy Landry who went down to Stage Island
Pool on the Parker River NWR (aka Plum Island) this afternoon to see
the RUDDY DUCKs that showed up there today. After finding the ruddies
she made a stop at the Lot Seven beach overlook. And guess what? She
found an early PIPING PLOVER on the beach. This is about a week
earlier than any other record I have from the island in the 21st
century database. Yeah, Nancy!
