[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Canvasbacks, Belmont 3-15-08 From: Jeffrey Boone Miller <miller(AT)bbri.org> Date: 15 Mar 2008 8:30am A wary hen and drake pair of Canvasbacks graced the eastern shore of Clay Pit Pond in Belmont (near the High School) this morning at ~8AM. This is the first time I have seen Canvasbacks during spring migration in this greater Fresh Pond area, though they are reliable autumn visitors at nearby Fresh Pond in Cambridge. 11 Common Mergansers and 5 Mallards were also on the Pond. A large number of Canada Geese were grazing on the nearby athletic fields. ----Boone J. Boone Miller Belmont, MA miller(AT)bbri.org

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Woodcocks, common Mergs in Newton From: maurice.gilmore(AT)comcast.net Date: 15 Mar 2008 11:54am Folks, Thanks, Paula Mcfarland for the earlier alert. Last evening, (3/14) 6:50-7:15 in Nahanton Park, off Nahanton Street, In the high field near the dirt parking lot, I listened to at least 6 woodcocks Peenting. Two were out of range, but 4 were around the field. I had two angry chase-byes at just over head level, close to me, with the second woodcock uttering angry chittering noises. There were direct overhead flights, and three good views, close, on the ground. The evening before, friday, on the way home from work, I got there later and saw two overheads and heard some peenting before the show shut down. Today, at 12 two common mergs in Bullough pond, Newton, at Comm. Ave and Center St.. Pete Gilmore Newton MA maurice.giulmore(AT)comcast.net

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Longmeadow, MA From: "Scott Ricker" <ptbagger(AT)verizon.net> Date: 15 Mar 2008 2:34pm MassBirders, Cheryl & I went to West Rd then over to Pondside Rd. then back to West Rd. Ducks weren’t as abundant as when I was in this area last Wednesday. The level of flooding has dropped in the fields off of West Rd or shifted, which made the Green-wing Teal completely un-viewable. The Teal stay in the furthest portion of the field towards the tree line, the only time you can see them is when they fly in or lift & land. West Rd, In total I saw about 30 Green-wing Teal in flight Northern Pintail, 10-20 were scattered in the corn stalks, and a few were out in the larger portion of the water 1-2 American Wigeon, I found the AWigeon the second time back @ West Rd. There was what looked like a female AWigeon following the Male, but I couldn’t get clear looks at the bird long enough to positively ID. 1-Pileated Woodpecker-calling 1-Female Red-bellied Woodpecker Pondside Rd, 25-Ring-necked Duck 1-Female Canvasback-diving with the Ring-necks 1-Belted Kingfisher 2-Hooded Mergansers-diving in the portion of water at the intersection of Pondside & West Rd. It flew directly towards us as we drove home, then swerved up and over, and we didn't get to see where it went. Sorry folks, it was late and we were too tired to stop and hunt in our neighbors yards! It was certainly a very small owl. May be the only glimpse I'll ever get. Kay Langevin, Acushnet lensantiques(AT)comcast.net

The pair of Red-shouldered Hawks are still in the neighborhood. I'm hoping to find where they nest, to get it confirmed for the BBA. This afternoon we got great looks at a Fisher as it came to the compost in the back yard. Best looks I've ever had. Every other look I've had has been fleeting, and usually at night. http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/fisher Tom Murray Groton, Ma. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Canvasback Sightings From: newburyportbirders(AT)comcast.net Date: 15 Mar 2008 8:18pm Birders, I was thrilled with the drake Canvasback at Cherry Hill Reservoir in West Newbury on a bright but cold March afternoon. This drake was stunning as winter's hoary backdrop remained solid, and the foreground was fluid and opening to the next season. Canvasback reports are uncommon to rare in Essex County. This month there have been sightings of them in both southeastern NH and Essex County. Are the sightings of the Canvasback increasing here due to a change in its food source and/or availability? Is the saline level changing and affecting the grasses in the duck's usual range? Is turbidity playing a role in the decline in plant beds there? The species name of the Canvasback, Aythya valisineria, evolved from Vallisneria americana or wild celery. The Canvasback feeds on the winter buds and rhizomes of wild celery. These buds are high in carbohydrates and increase body fat in waterfowl. The leaves and tubers of wild celery are a preferred food of Canvasbacks, Common and Barrow's Goldeneyes, Mallards and scoter species. Wild celery's straight, ribbon-like leaves rise from the base of the plant. Limp and long, the leaves have a pale green midrib. In summer, a small pod is on the end of each long stalk. As shallow diving foragers propelled by their large, webbed feet, the Canvasback folds its wings close to its body while foraging underwater. Its diet is comprised of aquatic plants, clams, small crustaceans, delta duck potato, eelgrass, widgeon grass, sago pondweeds, water lilies, bulrush, sedge, small fish and midge larvae. This large, sleek duck has a long, sloping profile. The drake sports a bold plumage with a rusty-red, wedge-like head with a white/silver body. It's a white bodied duck flanked by black parentheses. The Canvasback is 19-22 inches from its black bill to its black rump with a wingspan of 31 to 35 inches. It weighs 1.9 - 3.5 pounds. The Canvasback is known to accquire a new mate each year; pairbonding begins in late winter. Its breeding habitat is prairie wetlands. A bulky nest is constructed of marsh vegetation, and the interior is lined with down. Eggdumping in other Canvasback nests has been documented. During the non-breeding season, large flocks or rafts gather on the water. Canvasbacks are strong fliers ~ swift, powerful and straight with a maximum speed of 70 mph. Their migrating flocks are large, V-shaped regiments. The Canvasback requires a lengthy, running takeoff prior to becoming airborne.
