[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: No. Andover & Groveland Ponds From: "Dana" <danafox(AT)comcast.net> Date: 18 Mar 2008 5:44am Yesterday afternoon, Bob and I visited Lake Cochicawick (Sp?) in North Andover - the Rt. 133 side is still iced in, later we went to the south side where the wind has opened up a big swatch. We got close to the lake via the Rolling Ridge Center - we had 40 Common Mergansers - only two females and 10 Buffleheads. Hovey'e Pond in Boxford was still iced in, Johnson's Pond in Groveland was almost entirely iced in - on the north side off where the small marsh begins, we had 9 Ring-necked Ducks. On the south side just a small opening but no ducks. On the small pond south of there (Name???) there were 30 Ring-necked Ducks, 1 male Hooded Merganser, 3 Black Ducks and a Male Goldeneye. Springish conditions are slower to arrive here. Dana and Bob Fox Dana Duxbury-Fox No. Andover, MA danafox(AT)comcast.net

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Saint Zonotrichia From: "Mark Lynch" <moa.lynch(AT)verizon.net> Date: 18 Mar 2008 8:52am I came across this story in the latest issue of BRITISH BIRDS: Under NEWS AND COMMENT pp. 170 British Birds 101. March 2008 166-170 "That Blessed Sparrow! The arrival of a North American White-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) in Cley, Norfolk, was manna from heaven for British listers, as this handsome bird, although the fourth British record, is the first “twitchable” individual. It has also proved to be a blessing to the village church, St. Margaret’s. So far during it’s lengthy stay in the village (still present at the time of writing, frequenting the driveway of retired clergyman Richard Bending and his wife, Sue), a collection from twitchers for the church restoration fund has amassed a staggering £5, 650 (to date). It is proposed that these funds will be used to renovate the big west window that overlooks the site where the sparrow feeds. And a new pane will be created that features an etched or stained glass White-crowned Sparrow. A worthy commemoration of the stripey visitor’s stay in Cley—and of birder’s generosity.” Accompanied by a great photo of the sparrow and a photo of the usual cheek by jowl group of twitchers twitching (looking at it). One can only imagine what could have been accomplished if the sparrow appeared in front of a pub. Mark Lynch Moa.lynch(AT)verizon.net No virus found in this outgoing message. His response regards the nearby pub rather than the church - but we all have our favorites....... David, Actually, and perhaps you can spread this news too, it was (is) about 20 yards from the village pub in Cley. The name of the pub, incidentally, is the Three Swallows - I kid you not! And I have seen a Red-rumped Swallow (a rare migrant up from the Mediterranean) in the past from the pub. David Clapp David E. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Jamaica Plain Falcons, 3/18: Peregrine and Kestrel From: Jake Miller <fiatlux.interport(AT)rcn.com> Date: 18 Mar 2008 6:08pm Birders-- On my way to pick up my son at day care this afternoon I spotted a raptor on the UMass Boston/State Forensics Lab building between Forest HIlls T and the Arboretum. It's a common hangout for the local redtails, but when I got the bird in my binoculars, it was a Peregrine Falcon. It had flown off by the time we got our son suited up and strapped into his carriage. We walked home via Forest Hills Cemetery, where, on Lake Hibiscus there were 4 Hooded Mergansers and 5 Mallards (including one sullen bachelor--there have been some pretty fantastic, aggressive "courtship" flights the last few days and he seems not to be doing very well in the aerial pursuit and combat department). Yesterday (3/18) there were 200+ American Crows in the cemetery, but they just seemed to be mobbing one another, playing tag, chasing from tree to tree. I keep hoping that one of the noisy flocks of crows I see there will lead me to a Great Horned Owl. I know they must be in there somewhere, but so far no luck. Today there were less than a dozen crows around. When we were nearly home, I heard an American Kestrel calling as it flew overhead--it was a nice adult male. First I can remember seeing in this little corner of the neighborhood. Good birding! Jake Miller Jamaica Plain fiatlux at interport dot net

The COA annual meeting is being held again at Middlesex Community College in Middletown, Connecticut. Do you find identifying shorebirds a challenge? Kevin Karlson, co-author of The Shorebird Guide has a different approach that may make the difference for you! Do you care about bird conservation? Two presentations deal with it. Jack Wells is the author of the recently published Birder's Conservation Handbook, while Robert Askins relates our local challenges to those seen in Japan. Does the idea of travelling to the far reaches of the earth to see a Black-and-white Warbler seem a bit odd? Julian Hough will talk on one of the United Kingdon's most serious birding destinations. There is more than just preseentations of course. There are faces to put to names, frienships to make and renew, raffles, vendors selling all sorts of birding items, and more. And it is a chance to support the COA, sponsor of this daily report. There is still time to pre-register if you act in the next couple of days. (If you want the catered lunch you HAVE to pre-register!) The form, and all the details of the meeting, are on the COA web site at: http://www.ctbirding.org/08meeting.htm http://www.ctbirding.org/08docs/08COAmeeting.pdf Hope to see you there!
