Good Morning,
Just a quick note to anybody that is considering joining me this =
Saturday 4/5, I would highly suggest wearing Wellies or Muck-boots or =
some similar waterproof boot as it will make things much more =
comfortable and easy-going. I did some scouting last weekend and the =
trail gets pretty wet and muddy in spots on the trail around Crooked =
Pond.
Cheers,

I checked on the A. golden plover this morning before work. It is still there,
but this morning it was back to a wet area on the north (left) side of the road
after the curve along the Plum Island Airport. It was directly out from the only
small deciduous tree next to the road on that side. There were eight killdeer
just before the hanger on the right side.

Subject: sad news - Barbara Walker
From: Barbara Volkle and Steve Moore <barb620(AT)TheWorld.com>
Date: 2 Apr 2008 9:26am
Many of you remember Barbara Walker, Worcester county birder and
butterfly enthusiast. Barbara lost her long struggle with cancer on
Saturday, March 29th. In the words of Bill Benner "Her passing is a
tremendous loss to all of her many friends and to the Massachusetts
butterfly and birding communities. She was a very talented
naturalist, as well as... a very gentle soul".
From the Worcester Telegram and Gazette "Barbara loved to travel,
but her favorite wild places were at home. She was a long time
volunteer and a member of the advisory committee at Broad Meadow
Brook Audubon Sanctuary in Worcester. She was also an officer of
Forbush Bird Club and the Massachusetts Chapter of the North American
Butterfly Association, and a member of the Athol Bird and Nature
Club. Barbara believed that every trail was a loop trail. There's no
point in seeing what you've already seen, and if you walked far
enough, you'd end up back where you started."
Calling hours will be from 6-8 Wednesday, April 2 & Thursday, April 3
in CASWELL-KING FUNERAL HOME, 474 Grove St., Worcester. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Broad Meadow
Brook Audubon Sanctuary, 414 Massasoit Rd., Worcester 01604 or Susan
Koman For The Cure, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, TX 75244.
Additional information is available at www.telegram.com. Use the
search function for the past 7 days.
Barbara's enthusiasm and zest for life was contagious. She will be
missed by all of us who knew her and whose lives she touched.

Ida Giriunas and I went up to New Hampshire this morning to try for

Although there is a foot and a half of snow out in the woods in back
of my house, a few new birds have shown up. A Cardinal was singing
in the misty rain from the top of a sugar maple yesterday. Today the
pair of White-breasted Nuthatches are cleaning out last year's nest
hole and several Purple Finches have returned from where ever they
spend the winter bringing a few goldfinches with them.

Subject: 4/3 Duxbury misc.
From: Rick Bowes <rbowes(AT)bowesweb.com>
Date: 2 Apr 2008 2:48pm
A quick pass down the bay side of the Beach this morning (8:00-9:30
with high tide at 8:54) revealed most of the seasonal regulars but
the stiff wind made scoping impossible except from within the car and
created so many whitecaps on the bay that birds were hard to see. No
shorebirds in evidence though I wore out my eyes checking every rock
along the 3+ mile shoreline for a huddled traveler. I did get at
least 3 Killdeer in the marsh near the Gurnet guard shack.
For me today is the first "real" spring day as a first-of-year Phoebe
appeared on the fence outside our window at home. Other arrivals are
welcome harbingers of the season, but for me the arrival of the
plucky Phoebe makes it official.

Alex Ratelle and I led Wednesday Morning Birding out of Joppa Flats
Education Center today. The surf was up as the weather gods once again
dealt Wednesday Morning Birding another contrary blow -- this in the literal
sense! But at least the sun was shining. The surf was up on the big pans
and the little pans (complete with foam), on the Plum Island River, on Plum
Island Sound -- everywhere you looked -- with the winds huffing and puffing
out of the west northwest15-25 mph with gusts approaching 40. The sky was
clear with temps in the low 40s. (Ian, thanks for the tip on the
Blue-winged Teal at the main pan -- somehow they eluded us. Must have
become hidden behind the vegetation.)
Here's our rather sparse list:
Snow Goose (4) - s. end Bill Forward Pool (BFP).
Canada Goose
American Wigeon (4) - pr. main pan; pr. BFP.
American Black Duck
Mallard
Northern Pintail
Green-winged Teal
Common Eider (4) - Bar Head (BH).
Scoter sp. - BH.
Common Goldeneye (3) - BH.
Osprey (1) - Pines platform.
Northern Harrier (2)
Killdeer (8) - 6, PI Airport; 2, pans.
Ring-billed Gull
Herring Gull
Great Black-backed Gull
Rock Pigeon - PI Bridge.
Mourning Dove (4)
Great Horned Owl (1) - nest pines s. new blind (thanks, Tom).
Eastern Phoebe (1) - Susan Gurkus/Ben Flemer, Bird Banding Station (BBS).
American Crow
Horned Lark (6) - South Field.
Tree Swallow (2) - seen over main pan on pre-program scout.
Black-capped Chickadee (1) - Hellcat restrooms.
American Robin - many migrants at roadside.
Northern Mockingbird (2) - 1, PI Bridge; 1, S-curves.
European Starling
Song Sparrow
Dark-eyed Junco (2)
Northern Cardinal (1) - Hellcat restrooms.
Red-winged Blackbird
Eastern Meadowlark (2) - 1, PI Airport; 1, South Field.
Common Redpoll (1) - Susan Gurkus/Ben Flemer, BBS.
We will meet again next week back at Joppa Flats Education Center at 0930
for Wednesday Morning Birding. For more information about Joppa Flats

Roxbury, Boston
From: "Marshall J. Iliff" <miliff(AT)aol.com>
Date: 2 Apr 2008 10:48pm
All,
I checked my local Rusty Blackbird flock this evening (2 April) and was
thrilled to find triple-digit numbers staging in the saplings. At about
6:45-7:05 they were all sitting out in the tree and calling, just prior to
dropping down in the reeds.
I ran into some birders at Millennium at 4:30 yesterday and it is worth
reiterating that timing is everything. I would not look for these birds
earlier than 6:20, and again, the boat ramp is the place to get distant
looks. I don't recommend walking down the railroad tracks, but that is where
the birds are.
Location: Millennium Park
Observation date: 4/2/08
Notes: Rusty Blackbird Survey.
Number of species: 8
Canada Goose 4
American Crow 1
American Robin 7
Song Sparrow 1
Red-winged Blackbird 15
Rusty Blackbird 131 I watched these birds staging in trees just
above the Phragmites where they were roosting. A few other blackbirds were
scattered among them, but the majority were Rusties. Males vastly
predominate, as I had suspected from my earlier views. Many were already in
the roost when I arrived at 6:50, even though it was quite bright. My
previous counts of 36 and 58 were not thoroughly counted, but tonight I do
think I got a sense for the true magnitude of the roost, although there may
have been some birds that had already 'gone to bed'.
