An Eastern Phoebe perched at our back window Wednesday 4/2 about 5:30 PM.
It tail-flicked a few minutes and left.
A bear visited our feeding station last night. We had taken all but one
platform feeder in, and she found it empty.

Subject: Hawking Northern Cardinal & Cedar Waxwings ~
Newburyport
From: newburyportbirders(AT)comcast.net
Date: 3 Apr 2008 8:12am
Birders,
This morning while toting the recycling curbside, I watched a Northern
Cardinal pair hawking insects from my neighbor's outside light and graceful
they weren't. I've seen the Gray Catbird forage from the deck rail up to that
porch light before [last year when they had young in the nest]. Cardinals are
known as ground gleaners and picked off those moths that were attracted to
the light [ a compact fluorescent]. While he's being a good steward and I'm
enjoying bird behavior...
Then, a newly arriving social flock of Cedar Waxwings descended on the heated
birdbath. Once they finished drinking and bathing off to the Red-bud
Maples to refuel on the buds. Cedar Waxwings are usually a May bird in our
'hood. These handsomely distinct, partially masked birds looked even
more attractive after their feather maintenance session.
Energy efficient lighting and recycling are good for the environment and
birders...
Good birding,
Sue

Subject: Lark Sparrow and redpolls - Millbury 4/3
From: Dan Berard <frostedcorncrakes(AT)verizon.net>
Date: 3 Apr 2008 10:58am
The Lark Sparrow and redpolls are still putting in an
appearance in my yard in Millbury.
The Lark Sparrow has been here for almost 4 months now
and is in really nice plumage.
The redpoll numbers vary from day to day and
throughout the day. The high count as of late has been
in the low 80s. There is still the occasional Hoary
Redpoll with 2 fairly obvious individuals visiting
last week. This morning, the flock had only 23 birds
but 1 was a Hoary, 2 were Greater Commons, and 4 were
odd birds that I'm not confident calling anything
other than redpolls.
Here is the list of highlights from the yard today:
Wood Duck - 1
Common Merganser - 5
Hooded Merganser - 2
American Woodcock - 1
Eastern Phoebe - 1
Carolina Wren - 2
Field Sparrow - 1
Lark Sparrow - 1
Fox Sparrow - 1
'Southern' Common Redpoll - 16
'Greater' Common Redpoll - 2 (or as I now call them:
Rodan Redpolls)
'Southern' Hoary Redpoll - 1f
Redpoll sp - 4
There are also large numbers of Red-winged Blackbirds,
Common Grackles, and Brown-headed Cowbirds moving in
and out of the yard throughout the day.

Folks,
In the Fenway section of Boston:
A quick lunch run between classes at NU:
a cooperative fox sparrow in the bushes behind the Vietnam memorial, at 1:30.
A woodcock one foot from me as I walked through the community gardens,
slowly.
We spooked each other, but both kept our cool, at 2:00.
It flopped about 8 feet, lit, composed its dignity, and walked calmly about 6
feet into

Well, it feels like a long time since I've posted to massbird; just returned
from nearly a month of research in Costa Rica and I can tell you a lot of
good birds are coming our way. I was greatful to be seeing some birds in my
neck of the woods, especially since I'm now VERY behind in the Plum Isle
competition on account of my trip. Highlights (for me anyway--for you all
it's old hat) was a singing Purple Finch and singing Eastern Meadowlarks.
Sightings were from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, moving in a northerly direction
starting from Plum Island. Temps, according to the radio started at 38F and
moved to 55F by day's end. Some ice in freshwater pools, but spring peepers
were heard along Pike's Bridge Rd. Sunny and much calmer than yesterday,
with only an occasional breeze of est 5-10 mph.
Here is what I saw: (PI=Parker River NWR, Newb=Newbury Airport,

The story said that the removal was at the behest of the Dept. of Fish & Wi=

sumably has the right to make that call. A Red-tailed Hawk can do a lot of=

There is another easy to see nest in pines just off the parking lot at

What is particularly troublesome here is the fact this is the second time
this has happened with another nest removal a couple of years age. Why
the owners did not learn from the first is beyond our knowledge. These
nests and birds are large and they are not stealthy, so noone can claim
they did not see them.

The story said that the removal was at the behest of the Dept. of Fish &
Wildlife. While nest removal might be illegal for an individual, the DFW
presumably has the right to make that call. A Red-tailed Hawk can do a
lot of damage, and though it's sad to see the nest go, imagine the
fallout if the hawk had gotten an eyeball. Seems like a good call here.
