Enjoy, Phil --------------------------------------------------------------- The Hamilton-Wenham Public Library, in partnership with Gordon College presents guest speaker, TOM WESSELS, author of Reading the Forested Landscape: A Natural History of New England and The Myth of Progress: Toward a Sustainable Future. Place: GORDON COLLEGE, 255 Grapevine Road, Wenham, MA 01834 Date: TUESDAY, APRIL 8, 2008 7:00 PM - Meet and Greet Reception at the President's Dining Room, in Lane Student Center. 7:30 PM - Lecture in the A.J. Gordon Memorial Chapel followed by a book signing. The Friends of the Hamilton-Wenham Public library are inviting all students free of charge! The regular ticket price is $10.00. Tickets can be purchased at the Hamilton-Wenham Public Library at 14 Union Street, Hamilton MA, online at www.hwlibrary.org, or at the door the night of the event. This presentation by Tom Wessels will demonstrate how one interprets the history of forests by observation and by understanding the clues of “forest forensics.” Tom Wessels is an engaging speaker with an encyclopedic knowledge about his subject! For over 30 years, Wessels has given informational workshops on the natural history of landscapes in the United States. He is the founding director of the master’s degree program in conservation biology at Antioch University New England Graduate School in Keene N.H. Wessels continues to teach there as an ecology professor in the Department of Environmental Studies. Please plan to join us for this special event. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Bohemian Waxwings in Bradford, MA - Ross' Goose in Durham, NH From: Steve Mirick <smirick(AT)comcast.net> Date: 5 Apr 2008 7:46am While leaving the house this morning, Jane and I were treated to a flock of 75 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS! Unfortunately about 1 mile away to be on our yard list, but perhaps in the next day or two? The birds are feeding in a fruit tree in the parking lot at the Dunkin Donuts on Rt. 125 south of the Basilliere Bridge over the Merrimac River in Haverhill near the Wendy's. We've had relatively bad luck with this species so far this winter, so we're glad to finally get them for our Bradford list. Also, while there, I got a call from David Deifik reporting that the ROSS'S GOOSE is still present in the Moore Fields in Durham, NH. Seen straight out from the farm stand. Steve Mirick Bradford, MA

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Re: Tom Wessels, April 8, Gordon College From: "Jim Berry" <jim.berry3(AT)verizon.net> Date: 5 Apr 2008 8:08am Regarding Tom Wessels' presentation Tuesday night at Gordon College in Wenham (details below): Anyone who has read Reading the Forested Landscape by Tom Wessels might know it as something close to a life-changing event. It was for me, anyway. I would call it one of the most significant books I have ever read, because of what it taught me about understanding the forests of central New England and how to interpret their history from various clues about the trees and the ways humans have altered the land. Tom is also an outstanding writer, who ties the history of forest use to the broader environmental problems we face today, which makes reading the book even more valuable. I have heard Tom speak a couple times, and his oral slide presentations make the book come alive, with the added advantage of being able to ask questions. After some lectures he takes the class for a walk in a nearby woods and shows you how to read those clues, even if he has never seen that woodlot before. That won't be the case Tues. night, but the presentation alone is worth the price of admission. I could not recommend any talk more highly. As a disclaimer, I have no connection to Tom Wessels. This is an unsolicited endorsement. Tide was low, so we walked out to the jetty on the Waquoit Bay side and back along the beach. Our only miss was American Oystercatcher, a pair which are back and can be seen on the grass flats of Sedge Lot Pond during high tide and on Washburn Island other times. Osprey are back on nests, Gannets are unusual on Nantucket Sound, but have been present all week from Centerville to Falmouth. The Peregrine was flying low over the dunes going east with purpose, looked like an immature bird. Snowy Egret was first of the spring for SCB, Greater Yellowlegs and Horned Larks as well. My only luck was at the corner of Beach and Clover Hill, as Barrett reported. For further information, I had seen these birds yesterday around 3 PM, but driving by and without binoculars made the ID suspect, although I did see enough at the time to get me back there this AM. Today the birds were flushed by a passing police car at about 12:30 PM, right after my report. I'd recommend giving this area a look several times today and tomorrow, as it seems the birds have hung around here a bit the last two days. good birding Tim Spahr Marlborough tspahr(AT)cfa.harvard.edu

This would be a good time to mention that the seawall over the causeway is being rebuilt. Be aware of 1 lane of traffic with lights. On the No. Goshawk, which Barrett reported for me 2 days ago. I had just crossed the street on way to Sanctuary when I saw a bird fly into the large conifer near the little ranch at the corner of Ocean Ave. and Risley Rd.Excellent binoc looks at adult No. Goshawk. Went back to house and got my scope and got the bird from the driveway. I did not have binoculars with me, but going by shape (looked like a tight flock of Starlings) and calls (sounded like Cedars on steroids), I know I'm still going to be on the look out for them around Essex county. A lot of the neighbors in the area are telling me they had "Waxwings" in their yards. I'm wondering if some of them might not know there are two species. There are still reports of them in Bradford also, so keep your eyes peeled! Warren Tatro Peabody, MA wtatro(AT)verizon.net

Locations included Sterling Peat, the Waushacum Ponds, Gate 39, and Scar Hill Bluff. One of the highlights of the day occurred when I was checking out the great blue heron rookery on route 12 in West Boylston. I counted 6 active nests, only one was occupied by a young Bald Eagle! Plum Island Bird #247. Northern Gannet 3 distant, off Lot 1 Great Egret 1 marsh N of refuge gate. Beautiful breeding plumage! AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER 2 together in grassy marsh laced with small pools,South of Lot 3. Quite a surprise! I watched these for 10+ minutes at fairly close range, through my scope at 40-60X. One had a few black spots showing on the belly; the other none. Golden-brown tinge to back and head; overall "finer-looking" than Black-Bellied (not seen today). Primaries projected noticeably beyond the tail tip; tail background color was light brown, not white. I did't see either of the birds fly, so could not check the axillaries. I did get several marginal pictures through my scope with a digital camera. Seen about 3:30 PM; I couldn't relocate them at 6:00 as I left. Hairy Woodpecker 1 when I stopped to check for the plovers before leaving PI, instead I found this Hairy on the dunes side of the road. Heard & seen before it flew South. EASTERN PHOEBE 2 along road between Lot 5 and Cross Farm Hill Northern Shrike 1 road near Lot 6; located by its warbles that at first had me thinking Pine Grosbeak! TREE SWALLOW 1 over pans Cedar Waxwing 17 in trees in North Field. I scanned them carefully, but they were all CEWA, no BOWA. Swamp Sparrow 1 SIP SNOW BUNTING 1 flyover at Lot 1 Eastern Meadowlark 1 singing in field at warden's >This report was generated automatically by eBird v2(http://ebird.org) OTHER NOTES: lately there has been at least one FISH CROW seen & heard in WESTFORD, as in past years. It/they are around the shopping plazas on Route 110, near Exit 32 off Rte 495. Also, a week ago I checked out the large flocks of Robins in fields & lawns around South Lancaster. Of the 1050 total count, I was able to scan about 2/3 of them closely, but no Redwings or Fieldfares turned up.
