Chris Dalton's Bohemian Waxwing was joined by 10 others this morning.
I had a flock of 11 bohemians around 755 while walking my dog around
olmstead park, then they flew to some ornamentals at the entrance of
downs park where they joined about 10 cedars. So, I got them on both
my boston and brookline lists!

From: Jim Moore <epiphenomenon(AT)earthlink.net>

Since I have not seen it posted yet, just wanted
to note that on the BBC walk through the Crooked
Pond area in Boxford (Bald Hill Reservation) led
by Alan Bennett yesterday (4/6), singing Winter
Wrens were located as well as a nesting pair of
Cooper's Hawks.
I looked for the American Golden-Plover(s) near
the Plum Island Airport yesterday without success;
several other observers also came up empty.
However, I did observe eight Greater and one
Lesser Yellowlegs, an Eastern Meadowlark, and a
Rough-legged Hawk in the vicinity. I also
observed 2 Great Egrets at Hellcat Swamp, my first
of the year. The weather was drizzly, windy, and
cold, so most birds appeared to be hunkered down.
On Saturday, I observed the following in the
Squantum area of North Quincy:
Location: Squantum

Chris Elphick, a conservation biologist working primarily on birds in
the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of
Connecticut, will talk about his lab group's ongoing research on the
ecology, behavior and conservation of saltmarsh nesting sparrows at the
Hampshire Bird Club meeting on April 14.
The meeting will begin at 7:30 pm in the Immanuel Lutheran Church at 837
N. Pleasant Street in Amherst, MA.
More information on Elphick's research can be found at

Elphick grew up in England and began birding when he was big enough to
hold a pair of binoculars. His research focuses on the conservation
ecology of birds, especially in agricultural settings and wetlands.
Along with David Sibley and Barny Dunning he edited the Sibley Guide to
Bird Life and Behavior and wrote the syndicated newspaper column Sibley

Subject: Prothonotary Warbler - Wellfleet 4/6
From: Dan Berard <frostedcorncrakes(AT)verizon.net>
Date: 7 Apr 2008 6:08pm
MassBirders,
Yesterday (Sunday 4/6), there was a Prothonotary
Warbler at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. It
was present ~ 7:15am - 8. Thankfully, it was very
vocal which is what gave it's presence away. When it
finally showed itself, it was hopping around on the
ground near the feeders behind the building.
I searched for it today but was unable to find it.
Again, it was seen behind the building in a thicket
near the feeders. If you're planning on looking for
the bird, PLEASE, do not go behind the building to
check the thickets near the feeders. This only flushes
the birds at or near the feeders.
The thicket it was in can be seen from inside the
Visitor's Center. It'll be on the right when looking
at the feeders.
Also be sure to check the area around the frog pond
near the 'outside' feeders, Silver Spring, and the Bay
View Path.
I found the date fairly odd, but checking records
for a few states, it seems that Prothonotary Warblers
arrive on breeding grounds further south around the
second week of April (give or take). In Ma there are
several April records with a few March sightings as
well.
Other birds of interest at the sanctuary today were
an Eastern Screech-Owl perched out on Silver Spring, 4
Savannah Sparrows, a Tree Swallow and an American Oystercatcher.

Hi all,
=20
This morning between 10:30AM and 12:10PM I walked around Olmsted Park and D=
ownes Field on the Boston-Brookline line looking for the previously reporte=
d Bohemian Waxings. My father was visiting from California, so I really wan=
ted to show him these birds. Unfortunately we couldn't turn up anything mor=
e rare than a Brown Creeper (two, to be precise).=20
=20
After dropping my dad off at Logan this afternoon, I went back to Olmsted P=
ark (~5:15PM) and managed to find the flock of Bohemian Waxwings. There wer=
e 15! of them with one Cedar Waxwing. They were in a tree along the curve o=
f the park next to Downes Field. I twice saw four of them make their way do=
wn to the stream for a drink. I watched the flock for perhaps 10 minutes, c=
ounting and recounting, but I could never find more than 15 BOWAs. After a =
while, they flew deeper into Olmsted Park and started feeding on a budding =
tree (my dendrology is rusty, so I don't know what kind of tree it was). I =
watched them for another 7 minutes or so before they all took off and flew =
over Downes Field and out of site.=20
=20
I also saw one Merlin cruise through the park. Very cool!
=20
Good birding!
