After checking 68 of my 95 nestboxes yesterday,?I found only five complete
bluebird nests, a few partial nests, and no eggs yet.? I generally have one or
two nests with eggs around the first of April.? Oh well, it's probably just as
well, since most years many the early nesters take a hit?when cold, wet?weather
occurs at end of month and early May. Anyone else have any eggs yet? Of the
remaining boxes, one site has 16 and never gets bluebirds for some reason...the
other site has 11 boxes and generally has one pair. Perhaps she'll have eggs
when I check tomorrow morning.

Subject: 4/12 Duxbury - Heron fallout!
From: Rick Bowes <rbowes(AT)bowesweb.com>
Date: 12 Apr 2008 12:02pm
I looked up from doing my taxes and saw a goodly number of large
birds on the mud flat some 300-400 yards from our deck (opposite
Harden Hill landing on the west side of Duxbury Bay). Not really
paying attention I first I thought they were Brant but then it
registered in my subconscious that these were waaaay too big for
Brant and shaped all wrong and it registered that they were
herons. As I was groping for my binos, three more birds drifted
in. To shorten the story, there were 27 Great Blue Herons all
mirrored on the shallow water that barely covered their feet (hence
it looked like 54 birds!). With them were 4 Common Egrets and a lone Snowy.
Some were active walking around poking at others, some jumping about
(yes, jumping!), and the rest just stood there half with their necks
well extended and the rest hunched down. By the time I got my scope
from the car, and set it up, they began moving about and then a
couple headed up the shoreline quickly out of sight blocked by our
neighbor's house. A minute or so later the bulk of them rose up as a
flock and followed the first pair. 7 remained for about 10 more
minutes and then they were gone as well.
We've lived here since 1979 and the most I've ever seen was 11 and
that was in August when post-breeding dispersal was happening. I've
seen lots of herons at once but always in connection with a rookery
and this had a very different feeling - these were road warriors on a
mission!. So many huge birds all flapping slowly by is an
awe-inspiring sight by itself, and then putting it in the context of
the inexorable, incredible annual migration of millions of wild
creatures results in a mighty humbling experience - and inspiration
to regularly encourage and support those privileged to work daily for
the welfare of such creatures and the environments they need all
along their pathways.

From: Steve Mirick <smirick(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 12 Apr 2008 3:10pm
Jane and I did a bit of atlasing/scouting this morning in Haverhill. We
have two 1/2 blocks along the NH state line and both in Haverhill this
year. A bit more woods than when we covered downtown Haverhill last
year . Not as much as we wanted for nesters today (especially hawks),
but still a few neat things. Highlights only:
Wood Duck - 12 including 10 in swampy area near Crystal Gorge. Males
and females.
Green-winged Teal - 6 flyovers at Tattersall Farm in Haverhill
Ring-necked Duck - 5 off Lake Street.
Hooded Merganser - 2 females
Red-bellied Woodpecker - 2
Hairy Woodpecker - 2
Pileated Woodpecker - 1 drumming off Crystal Street
American Kestrel - 3 total. 2 migrating?
Barred Owl - 2. I gave a couple of calls at Crystal Gorge and really
got one worked up at about 10:30 AM. A short time later, presumably a
2nd bird was calling about 1/2 mile away.
COMMON RAVEN - 1 calling near Tattersall Farm. I'd love to confirm them
in our area.
Brown Creeper - Pair working over some trees in a wooded swamp near
Crystal Gorge. Right on the NH state line.
Golden-crowned Kinglet - 1
BOHEMIAN WAXWING - 17 off Salem Street near Elmwood Cemetery in Bradford
(in our priority block from last year). Closer to our house than last
weekend, but still about 1/2 mile before we can get them on our yard list!
Eastern Bluebird - CONFIRMED - 2 pairs seen building nests. One in
bluebird box at parking lot for Tattersall Farm. The other in a natural
cavity off Lake Street. Our first confirmations of the atlas year!
Hermit Thrush - 1 at Crystal Gorge.
Also......Wood Frogs (nice chorus!), Spring Peepers, DEER TICK, Eastern

Subject: Newburyport Little Gull--NO at 3:15, but
Bonaparte's and Brant
From: tbbirds(AT)comcast.net (Terry Bronson)
Date: 12 Apr 2008 5:04pm
At 3:15 pm, very few gulls, maybe 15, near the former
Clam Shack in Newburyport. Almost high tide and
fog rolling in. Also 2 Greater Yellowlegs.
I went down to Joppa Park and scoped towards the
wastewater treatment plant, where I saw a small,
hooded gull among about 30-40 of the usual species.
When I got close enough along the dirt path behind the
plant, I saw that it was clearly a Bonaparte's Gull--pinkish
orange legs, black wingtips, and a faint eye ring. also
white underwings when it briefly lifted up.
Consolation prize, though, was my first 3 Brant of the
year.

We looked outside and decided the meteorologists were
mistaken, and went out to try to find a nesting GHO
pair and young we heard were at Putterham Golf Club in
Brookline.
The summer-like sun made for a great day, and after 45

Saw a marsh hawk in Duxbury this morning.
Looked to be a femail about 18 inches tall.
Beautiful white breast plumage with sligth flecks of brown, yellow
feet, brown with a slight twinge of orange head markings.
The marsh hawk observed me as I watched through my binonculars,
bobbing her head up and down slightly like a pigeon.
Apparently these hawks are a bit rare but if anyone could give me

WHSRNews Alert - 11 April 2008
Last month, we alerted you to the research
results and conservation actions of partners on
behalf of the Red Knot, particularly the
imperiled rufa subspecies. Within that, we noted
that the expired moratorium on harvesting
Horseshoe Crabs in New Jersey had not been
reinstated. With great joy, we’d like to share
the very good news that, on 25 March, New Jersey
Governor Jon Corzine signed a new moratorium
following its nearly unanimous approval by the
State Legislature. This moratorium on harvesting
Horseshoe Crabs in the state will stay in effect
“…until the populations of both Horseshoe Crabs
and Red Knots have returned to a level where they
will be self sustaining, as determined by the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.”
For the Governor’s press release, please visit

Our congratulations and deep appreciation go out
to the caring State legislators and conservation

Hi Birders,
I was surprised, and delighted, to find
a chipping Louisiana Waterthrush working
the small stream in my yard. This is
the first waterthrush of either species
I've had here in 5 years.

Margo Goetschkes and I birded Newburyport and Plum Island today. Noteworthy
was a lone, male COMMON REDPOLL on the Marsh Trail at Hellcat just beyond the
stairs where we had seen a flock of redpolls earlier in the season. It was
first in the birches, but then spent much time of the ground. Also, inspired
by Alison O'Hare's talk on PURPLE MARTINS at last night's BBC Meeting, we
found a single male scout flying high over the colony at the old headquarters
building at the north end of the island late in the day. Here is our list:

Massbirders,
Just a note to say that the North Atlantic Right Whale numbers in Cape =
Cod Bay are higher today that in decades, according to Dr.Stormy Mayo =
today at our pre season whale watch meeting at WBWS. There may be 100+ =
whales in the bay presently., and as Blair mentioned yesterday, they are =
visible from shore in numbers, along with an impressive Northern Gannet =
show. Dolphin Boats started running trips today.
