Nancy Soulette and I guided a small group from the Concord-Lincoln area on
their first visit to the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge this morning.
We enjoyed such highlights as Eastern Meadowlark (airfield) perched feet away
from the cars singing full tilt, freshly plumaged Greater Yellowlegs, Gadwall
and Green-winged Teal, the rosiest Purple Finch against blue sky, Osprey
skimming the North Pool overlook, Brown Thrashers, and Great Horned Owl
drowsing
its the nest. We were saying how can it get any better than scampering
Piping Plovers on the state beach, when we were stunned to pick up a Sandhill
Crane flying from Essex/Ipswich across the state park and southern tip of PRNWR
toward Rowley. A few brain circuits got rewired as we locked on to what we
were seeing; perhaps Rick's bird?

Hello. A number of years ago I saw a great Varied Thrush in Mt. Auburn
at Willow Pond. It was an American Robin which had acquired a broad dark
band across the breast from gathering mud from the shore to build a nest.
Great looking bird.

Subject: Turkey Vulture courting in Fairhaven
From: bvm1290(AT)comcast.net
Date: 18 Apr 2008 8:12pm
April 11, saw 5 Turkey Vultures at the Atlas Street end of the Hurricane
barrier in Fairhaven.
Three flew off and two stayed on the wall until one flew into a tree. A
cat walked past the one left on the wall, but both animals were studiously
avoiding each other. After the cat passed, the other vulture flew down from the
tree, spread his wings and did an elaborate dance , then mounted the other bird.
Got some far-off pics, but not of all the action.

April 12, 13 & 14 saw two TVs on top of abandoned Atlas Tack factory at various
times during the day. One flew up and circled above me, giving me the evil
eye. I read on BNA online that they nest in boulders, caves and abandoned
buildings. Is that what they might have been thinking of?
But on the 15th, the guys restoring the marsh at Atlas Tack started work again.
I didn't see the vultures after that. When I spoke to the guys and asked if
they had seen any vultures, they emphatically said yes and that the birds had
been flying close to them. They said "dive-bombed" but I didn't think that was
likely.

Date: 18 Apr 2008 9:16pm
Sorry. Previous report sent before finishing.
Margo Goetschkes and I birded Plum Island this morning and late
afternoon/evening , highlighted by a SANDHILL CRANE seen from the Hellcat Dike
at 5:40pm. Margo first spotted the bird flying in fairly low over Bill Forward
Pool just as we reached the Dike. The bird flew east of us, heading north, and
then veered east toward the ocean. It seemed to turn again, as if to head
south, but it was so low that we lost it behind the trees. We ran to the tower
to try to relocate the bird, but we were unsuccessful. The bird may have
turned again and continued north. Considering Brooke's sighting earlier in the
day at Sandy Point and Rick's earlier this week, it still maybe worth checking
the area tomorrow.

Subject: Red-tailed Hawk With Jesses
From: newburyportbirders(AT)comcast.net
Date: 18 Apr 2008 10:14pm
Birders,
There's a Red-tailed Hawk in the Newburyport Industrial Park that has grommeted
jesses on both legs. A talented Newburyport wildlife photographer caught a few
images of the bird while photographing the Bohemian Waxwings.
Jesses are intended to allow the falconer to keep control of the bird while it
is on the glove or in training as well as to allow the bird to be perched
outside
of its aviary. Falconry birds are routinely and as part of the sport set free -
the bond between bird and falconer is strong. There's a falconer out there
missing this handsome bird...
Best wishes,
Sue
