Subject: May 1, Plum Island, Two Tricolored Herons
From: Thomas Wetmore <ttw4(AT)verizon.net>
Date: 1 May 2008 10:10am
PI/MA Birders,
The Plum Island TRICOLORED HERON morphed into two herons over night.
To be fair, in an email Nancy Landry sent me very early this morning,
she said that yesterday the bird was in so many places it seemed like
there were two. Well, Nancy, guess what.
When I arrived at the North Pool Overlook around 6:30 this morning
they were sitting together on a small cut in North Field near the open
water at the overlook. Later they flew together to the Wardens area
and were seen by more birders in that area. One of the birds has a
nice set of plumes sticking out the back of its head.
This is a nice Plum Island bird. Usually one or two around each year,
but never a guarantee.
Good birding,

Subject: 5/1 Duxbury Beach
From: Rick Bowes <rbowes(AT)bowesweb.com>
Date: 1 May 2008 10:58am
A 30 minute down and back ride an hour after high tide. Singing from
Horned larks and Song Sparrows filled the air, and pairs Tree
Swallows were flying about each of the birdhouses making an array of
bubbly calls.
Highlights:
(a) 3 Green-winged Teal (Beach FOY) lounging at the water's-edge on
the peninsula south of High Pines with 4 female Red-breasted Mergansers, and
(b) a Willet in crisp, nicely dappled breeding plumage on the stones
at the water's edge just 20 feet off the road near the 1st xover. No
doubt soon it will be dive-bombing me and calling furiously as it
appropriates and then defends its territorial rights - but for today
as it slowly walked over the rounded stones it appeared that we both
enjoyed the other's company.

Last year a pair of night herons nested on Quill's Pond (or Ice House Pond,
depending on which old-time residents you talk to) on Hay Street in Newbury.
Today there was a single night heron on the edge of the pond. Perhaps we'll
have another nesting event this year.

Subject: Broad-winged Hawk
From: "Marj. Rines" <marj(AT)mrines.com>
Date: 1 May 2008 5:48pm
Today I went to check the location where I had Broad-winged Hawks
nesting last year, and discovered to my delight that they have returned
and are building a nest in the exact same tree - the old nest
dissintegrated during the winter. Last year they seemed to have gotten a
later start (or the first nest failed) because the chicks didn't start
branching till mid-August, which would put egg laying around the first
part of June.
Photos from last year are at:
http://mrines.com/Birds/Broad-wing-Nest/
Other nice birds were 2 Marsh Wrens just arrived at Vine Brook Marsh in
Burlington, and an American Pipit and a Green Heron in the Waltham
Street fields in Lexington.

Found the Orchard Oriole on the same tree as last year. It's a tall white
flowering tree, apple I believe, that seems to attract the Orchards each
year. The tree is between Lime and Halcyon Ave on Fountain Ave
I saw and photographed the male during my too short lunch break. On this
same tree last year May 4, I saw and photographed both a male and a female.
I posted the shots on my web page below.

Dennis Varza is doing a study on the birding habits of Connecticut
Birders and would really appreciate your help. The more people that
respond the more accurate the result. It doesn't matter wether you
cover 1 town or 100 towns.
1) Make a list of the towns you cover
2) Grade them by how frequently you go birding in each town:
3 frequently
2 regularly
1 occasionally
3) Send the list to Dennis Varza dennisvz(AT)optonline.net
From Hank Golet:
5/01 - Voluntown, Pachaug State Forest -- YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER. The
directions are: Go into the main entrance of Pachaug on Rt 49, take
the second right just before the bridge that goes over Mt Misery

to dirt. At a little less than 1/2 mile down the dirt road there is a

the area.

PI/MA Birders,
There were very few warblers reported from Plum Island today. There
was one Northern Parula near the Hellcat johns, seen by many, and a
Northern Waterthrush near the old blind, seen and hear by a few, but
not much else, single sightings of a Yellow-rumped Warbler and a
Common Yellowthroat.
However, after combining all species reported by a variety of birders,
the day's and therefore the month's count is now at 93, which is quite
respectable for the first day of May. Please check the sightings page at
