Hello,
Yesterday I had to head "over the mountain" so stopped for a brief time on
the access road off Route 141 to Mt. Tom and heard one Worm-eating Warbler
singing on the hillside. Very little other activity but it was mid-day.

Subject: May Day ~ Newburyport, Salisbury ~ 5/1/08
From: newburyportbirders(AT)comcast.net
Date: 2 May 2008 8:08am
Birders,
Here are my highlights for today:
*PRNWR morning visit:
Tri-colored Herons at the pool behind the Warden's johns
A vireo with a blue-gray head and a black eye; a thick, white ring
around the eye connected to the upper bill by a strong white line margined
below by a heavy black line, the throat and breast white, sides streaked
with yellow ~ which I've taken as a Solitary Vireo ~ by the Hellcat johns
Northern Parula at the Hellcat johns
American Woodcock on the pavement [stopping traffic] by the birdbanding station
doing the woodcock shuffle-strut
Northern Waterthrush heard "chinking" at the last wet area prior to the old
observation
blind at Hellcat ~ no view of this ground dweller today...
Eastern Meadowlarks copulating in the North Field
*Rail Trail from Mudnock Road to Friedenfels Street in Salisbury with Elaine
Lacourse:
Broad-winged Hawk, Belted Kingfisher, Marsh Wren, a very tattered Red-tailed
Hawk, Eastern Phoebe, Turkey Vulture, Peregrine Falcon
*PRNWR evening visit with Susan Sellers:
Tri-colored Herons flew from the Warden's Pool to the North Pool, and they
landed in the
third cove closest to the meadow/field.
Large Cooper's Hawk opposite Hellcat when leaving the parking lot
E. Meadowlark copulating in North Pool Field
Merlin after Lot #2 duneside
A mournful run-on coo like "pu-pu-pu-pu" coming from the North Pool
which I associate with the Pied-billed Grebe
Purple Martin pair at Lot #1
Ah, May!
Best wishes,
Sue

A brief visit to the Forest Hills Cemetery this morning on my way to work
yielded some new arrivals:
Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Black and White Warbler
Black-throated Green Warbler, all in the trees above the mausoleums at the
lake.
Otherwise there were a pair of Palm Warblers, a pair of Flickers in courtship
display, several Yellow-rumped Warblers, and the nesting pair of Cooper's Hawks
were vocalizing near the Tower St gate (where yesterday I saw a pair of
Red-breasted Nuthatches).

Subject: Great-horned Owl, Brookline
From: stint98(AT)aol.com
Date: 2 May 2008 11:44am
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
All,
On an evening run last night, I saw a Great-horned Owl fly across Beacon Street
near Dean Street in Brookline. The owl flew from the inbound side (near the D
line) towards Alston.
I don't know if GH owls are known to nest in the area or not, but I was
certainly surprised to see one in a relatively urban setting. If anyone knows
more about GH Owls nesting in Brookline,? please let me know.
On another note:
About 2-3 weeks ago, I posted about a chickadee that was adding moss to a likely
nest hole, while another was removing moss from the same hole. I checked the
nest again this week, and a chickadee was incubating eggs on a fully formed
nest. Whatever they were arguing about before, they must have worked it out.
Good birding,
Chris Dalton

Quick check 9:00-9:30 (tide high at 9:06)
1. Flooded Gurnet marsh exposed 11 Green-winged Teal - 9 in one flock
- unusual number for the beach.
2. A female Merlin with a rodent in its talons burst out of the brush
by the parking area entering Plum Hills.
3. At least 4 Willet pairs flying about and calling
frequently. Only saw 3 quiet birds yesterday.
4. Brant continue to be busily feeding everywhere you look -
especially visible with the high tide.
5. A Savannah Sparrow in full song. Nice to hear after hearing only
the tseeet for several weeks

Subject: May 2nd, Plum Island, Summary
From: Thomas Wetmore <ttw4(AT)verizon.net>
Date: 2 May 2008 4:40pm
PI Birders,
I received LOTS of sightings today, some covering the last few days as
well. The first updates are done and on the web. Though most birders
are anxiously awaiting the warblers, in very short supply the last few
days, lots of good stuff is showing up. Today's goodies included a
SOLITARY SANDPIPER (Paula McFarland), VEERY (photographed by Paul
Cozza), YELLOW WARBLER (Paula and myself), CLIFF SWALLOW (me). Once
again the pair of TRICOLORED HERONS put on a show in the morning, and
the GREAT HORNED OWL and AMERICAN WOODCOCK nests continue as major
crowd pleasers.
Ida Giriunas reported a WHIP-POOR-WILL heard yesterday evening.

Subject: Wilson's Phalaropes in Pikul's Pans
From: "Douglas Chickering" <dovekie(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 2 May 2008 4:44pm
Massbirders:
Lois and I also got the Wilson's Phalaropes in the Pans just north of
Pikul's farm. There were also six Glossy Ibis and three Pectoral Sandpipers
in the pans when we were there at about three this afternoon (May 2).
Notice to birders: remember the bridge over the Parker River on Route 1a is
closed, so you will have to approach the pans from the south. A little
inconvenience which is mitigated by the dramatic lessening of traffic which
will make the viewing considerably less dicey.

Subject: Manx Shearwaters - Revere Beach
From: "Andrew Birch" <andrewlbirch(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 2 May 2008 9:24pm
Hello All,
There is still a pair of Manx Shearwaters hanging out right next to
shore on Revere Beach. They were 100 yards south of the "Pink"
apartments at about 6:45 tonight. I watched them for about 15 minutes
- not the worlds most demonstrative birds. They just stayed on the
water face into the wind slowly working their way south along the
beach. Great looks though!
Best,

Thanks to Paula McFarland for pointing out this web site
(http://www.birdnature.com/timetable.html). Unfortunately, it is a
classic example of the mis-information that litters the web. I note
that the name of this web site is the "Nutty Birdwatcher" and with
respect to the migration time table for Massachusetts, it is well named!

Subject: CT Report 05/02/2008 Yellow-throated, Harlequin,
King Rail
From: Roy Harvey <rmharvey(AT)snet.net>
Date: 2 May 2008 9:40pm
Note: I have a third hand report that birders are playing King Rail
tapes at Station 43 - and possibly other rail tapes. IT IS NESTING
SEASON! Please respect the birds, and try a bit of patience instead.
Thanks!
From Tom and Ryan Sayers
5/01 South Windsor, Station 43 -- The king rail was heard once at the
far southern end of the marsh at about 5:30 p.m. Another birder
present had brief glimpses of the bird on 4/30 on the south side of
the road in the marsh. The water on 5/01 was very, very high covering
the road well before you get to where the marsh opens up.
From Don Morgan:
5/02 - ?????, Pachaug State Forest -- 1 YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER in
location described previously.
From Meredith Sampson:
5/02 - Old Greenwich, Greenwich Point -- HARLEQUIN DUCK & SNOW GOOSE
continue at their respective, favored spots, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH.
From Tim Antanaitis:
5/02 - Madison, Hammonasset State Park, Meigs parking field -- 1
UPLAND SANDPIPER, late afternoon.
From Unknown via Patrick Comins:
5/02 - Southbury, somewhere -- adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER. Those
wishing to see the bird should contact Patrick Comins
(PCOMINS(AT)audubon.org).
From Patrick Comins, Donna Rose Smith, Chris Field, Justin Coppola:
5/02 - Southbury, Audubon Center at Bent of the River -- Adult
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.
5/02 - Waterbury -- PEREGRINE FALCON atop one of the billboards on the
north side of I-84. These birds have been more hit or miss of late.
From David Schonfeld:
5/02 - Salisbury, Rail Trail -- YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER (male and
female).
From Frank Mantlik:
5/01 - Westport, Grace Salmon Park -- RUFF continues 7:10am
