[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: pair of ravens & turkeys, Carlisle From: "Tom Brownrigg" <brownriggs(AT)comcast.net> Date: 3 May 2008 10:50am At 6:15 AM today I heard turkeys gobbling in our neighbor's yard to the south. I opened a door to listen, and saw a raven flying north carrying an object in its beak - it looked like a large nut, but it might have been an egg. A few minutes later I saw a raven fly into our neighbor's locust tree to the north - it was soon joined by a second raven that perched about a foot away. The pair sat close together facing each other for several minutes; one sometimes made a "hoo" call like an owl. They flew to the southwest while calling at 6:30 AM. We have been seeing ravens around our house fairly regularly this spring. Tom J. Thomas Brownrigg Carlisle, MA 01741

I have other commitments this afternoon and cannot confirm the ID. If anyone else can drop by to have a look that would be productive. Mark Fairbrother Montague, MA 01351
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Orioles, rose-breasted grosbeak, catbird, raven From: Bonnie & Bob Buxton <bbxt(AT)comcast.net> Date: 3 May 2008 11:53am Lots of activity in our yard this morning! Orioles, catbird, rose-breasted grosbeak all returned within the past few days, and a beautiful raven was perched in a tree at the edge of our property today, vocalizing a bit, then briefly landing on the ground but chased away by grackles. Also a nice surprise, a red-breasted nuthatch ( very unusual for our yard ) has returned to our feeders after an absence of a few months. A white-breasted nuthatch pair has claimed one of our birdhouses, and they've been very busy this morning with their nest-building duties. Spring is wonderful! Millennium Park, West Roxbury, 8-10 AM GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, 8:15 AM, along the grass access road that briefly parallels the paved road to the canoe launch. It was mostly in the road but sometimes just into the woods and sometimes just into the grass on the park side. It was beautifully marked and although I couldn't get close to it the eye ring, back streaking and crown stripe were clear and strong. Also along this road a male and female Orchard Oriole exploring the trees near the cattails. Otherwise: Killdeer - 1 in the drainage ditch leading to the canoe launch Bluebird - 1 male whose red went nearly all the way around his head like a collar (High School side) Savannah, White-throat, and Song Sparrows Yellow Warblers - many in the woods along the river Warbling Vireos - likewise Rough-winged (2), Barn (1) and Tree (1-2) Swallows skimming the river in a loose group Blue-grey Gnatcatcher - 1 in the river woods, an area where they are known to nest. Downy Woodpeckers - a pair actively courting/copulating Cedar Waxwing - 1 along the river path Cowbirds - a few pairs Chickadees - several pairs Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1 flyover Stuart Walker Jamaica Plain stuarttwalker(AT)comcast.net

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: BBC Trip on Bike 05/03/08 From: <anhinga(AT)verizon.net> Date: 3 May 2008 4:22pm Hello MassBirders - This morning, Mark Burns and I led a birding by bike trip for the Brookline Bird Club at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Jane Zanichkowsky, Susan Hedman, and John Nelson joined us at 6:30AM at Parking Lot #1 and we birded our way south to the Pines Trail and back over a 4 hour period. This was the dankest day we have had for this annual birding by bike trip with temperatures never going above 47 df, winds blowing between 5-15 mph, periods of light drizzle, and not a ray of sunshine to be found. But we had fun anyway! We tallied 47 species for the Club list. There were several highlights for the morning but notables included seeing: one MERLIN at the Parking Lot #1 boat ramp who kept us company as we repaired a bike chain, 13 COMMON LOONS flying overhead, one NORTHERN PARULA near the Hellcat Observation Tower - our only warbler for the day, hundreds of SWALLOWS at Bill Forward Pool, two AMERICAN KESTREL and three OSPREY at the Pines Trail, several BROWN THRASHERS and EASTERN TOWHEES along the main refuge road. Following is a complete list of the birds we saw: Common Loon - 20 Double-crested Cormorant - 8 Great Egret -9 Snowy Egret - 1 Canada Goose - 30 Mute Swan - 7 Gadwall - 6 American Black Duck - 4 Mallard - 12 Green-winged Teal - 2 Red-breasted Merganser - 1 Osprey - 3 Northern Harrier - 1 American Kestrel - 2 Merlin - 1 Peregrine Falcon - 1 Killdeer - 4 Greater Yellowlegs - 3 Willet - 6 Herring Gull - 6 Great Black-backed Gull - 2 Rock Pigeon - 2 Mourning Dove - 5 Great Horned Owl - 1 American Crow - 10 Purple Martin - 1 Tree Swallow - 60 Northern Rough-winged Swallow - 2 Bank Swallow - 40 Black-capped Chickadee - 1 American Robin - 29 Northern Mockingbird - 8 Brown Thrasher - 9 WARBLER: Northern Parula - 1 - can you believe it ... one lone warbler for the entire trip! However, migrating Arctic Terns are equally, if not more likely, being 'grounded' by the inclement weather.
