[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Report of Cassin's Finch and various other SCZ birds From: DSUDDJIAN(AT)aol.com Date: 5 Jan 2002 12:12am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Hi MBBers, Chris Emmons gave me a nicely detailed description of an adult male CASSIN'S FINCH that he studied yesterday (1/3) for 15 minutes along China Grade at Big Basin Redwoods SP, about 0.5 mi. up the road from the northern junction with Hwy 236. It was with a small party of Purple Finches. Bob Smith reported a SHORT-EARED OWL at Wilder Ranch on 1/3. It was seen near dusk over the fields just southeast of the historic ranch complex. The following are my observations from today (1/4). The TENNESSEE WARBLER was still along Casserley Creek a short ways downstream of Green Valley Road about 8:50 this morning. 5 BARN SWALLOWS were at Watsonville Slough along Ford Road, inland of Hwy 1, along with a male BLUE-WINGED TEAL. 6 BARN SWALLOWS were with a handful of VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS over the grassy fields at West Beach Road x Shell Road at Pajaro Dunes. A female BLACK SCOTER and 2 MARBLED MURRELETS were off Manresa SB. I believe we missed both on the count day for the Moss Landing CBC, but these would be "count week" birds. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: South SCZ County From: Roger Wolfe <rogwolfe(AT)cruzio.com> Date: 5 Jan 2002 1:29pm Harkins Slough is about as full as it can get and it was nice to see good numbers and variety of waterfowl there. Three SWAMP SPARROWS were at the waters edge on the dump side of the road. In with the mix of waterfowl were four Greater Scaup. At College Lake there were three REDHEAD present(1 male, 1 female and 1 juvenile), in the large flock of Canada Geese there was a single cackling CAGO and a ROSS' GOOSE. Also three more GRSC. In flight over Kelly Lake were 17 American White Pelicans. Freedom Lake had a pair of Hooded Mergansers. Scoping from the lookout above Seacliff Beach produced three Marbled Murrelets. Cheers, Roger ((To unsubscribe MBB, send the command UNSUBSCRIBE MBB <YOUR MBB EMAIL ADDRESS> to <majordomo(AT)darwin.ucsc.edu>.))
