Subject: South SCZ County Owls

Hi All -
Rob Fowler and I went owling last night (1/5) in the Green Valley and
Merk Road areas. We started around 11 pm and ended around 1:30 am. On
Green Valley Road were 3+ species: Great Horned Owls at every stop,
Barn Owls at nearly every stop and 1 Saw-whet Owl about 1 mile from the
end of the road. We heard it well and for quite a while from the
pullout just beyond the 10 mph curve. In addition, we heard what
probably was the same Long-eared Owl that David Suddjian heard on 1/1 at
mile marker 2.65, but we couldn't be sure that what we heard wasn't a
barking dog.
Along Merk Road near the pond there were several Great Horned Owls and
Western Screech-Owls along with a pack of howling coyotes. A Virginia
Rail called from the pond while we were there.

PS - It was wonderful that not one car drove by us while we owled for
those 2.5 hours!

I think Highland Way has too much traffic overall to be very productive for
owling...at least that has been my experience. The upper sections also have a
bit more chaparral in the area around the road than is best for our forest
owls. Some of the roads off of Highland are better, such as Spanish Ranch
Road, Skyland Road and its connecting roads like Adams Road and Long Ridge
Road.
