Subject: Merlin + Pileated Woodpecker

Birding this morning, I saw a Merlin at the jct. of hwy 236 & China Grade; it 
was in the dead top of a fir tree. Continuing my trek, now on the Skyline to 
the Sea Trail, about half way between China Grade Rd. and North Escape Rd, I 
saw a Pileated Woodpecker. It was calling from the dead top of a stunted fir 
tree in an area characterized by immature knobcone pines and manzanita.

This afternoon there was a female Hooded Merganser and a Ring Necked Duck
keeping the usual assortment
of Mallards and Ruddy Ducks company on Antonelli Pond.
