Subject: Orchard Oriole continues

Hi All,
Just passing on word that I received that the male Orchard Oriole was seen
again today in the same area as previosly at Natural Bridges SB.
BTW, it is only the 2nd winter record for Santa Cruz County. We have fall
records and late March-April records, but one on January 3, 1995, was the
only other one from winter. I've always found that odd, since Monterey County
has a number of winter records.

Today at Natural Bridges Matt Brady and I had the male ORCHARD ORIOLE at
marker 3 in the willows and blackberrys. As for the age of this bird my
inital thoughts was a second year bird. When I got home I took a look in
Pyle and if I'm reading it right it is an After Hatch Year bird transition
out of its first year plumage to adult plumage. I think I explained that
right. Also at Natural Birdges was a couple overhead PINE SISKINS and a
BROWN CREEPER in the Eucs. A MURRE fly by offshore. On the rocks there were
several BLACK TURNSTONES and 3 SURFBIRDS, 2 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS, WHIMBREL,
and the usual WESTERN, GLAUCOUS-WINGED and their various hybrids.
At Westlake Pond we had the TUFTED DUCK, one of the GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GEESE, and 2 CANVASBACKS, and a FALCON calling.

Please note that the The Identification Guide to North American Birds
[Pyle's book (second edition), Pyle et.al. (first edition)] is an in-hand
identification guide, not a field guide. But, is great for those wanting
to understand aging, sexing and molt limits in passerines and near-passerines.

That is in-hand as in bird-in-hand or bird-banding guide.

At 1:20 today the Orchard Oriole was again low in the willows and
brambles of Marker 3 at NB. Unfortunately I didn't get as good a look as
others have because it was chased down the hill almost immediately by a
second bird.
But I did see it for about 30 seconds. It was interesting, I 've never
seen one with that much marking on the mantle before.

Subject: Moss Landing LAGO
From: "Donaldson, Judy" <judyd(AT)mbari.org>

A male LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCH--an adult in winter plumage--
was scuffling around in a pile of wood chips at the top of the
Moss Landing Marine Labs driveway, around 2:00 Friday afternoon.
Is it unusual for the LAGO to be there in winter?
