Subject: eagles and bluebirds
From: Tonya Haff <thaff(AT)cats.ucsc.edu>
Date: 1 Feb 2002 10:57am
Howdy,
Yesterday on a nature walk Jenny Anderson, a few others and I were
lucky enough to spot a GOLDEN EAGLE flying above the Great Meadow on
campus. Its behavior was quite interesting - it would soar for a few
seconds and then stoop for a few seconds (tucking its wings in and
diving). It repeated this behavior probably 10 or more times before
flying out of sight. I haven't seen this before, but it seemed to be
a display.
This morning on my ride to work I spotted 3 WESTERN BLUEBIRDS near
the main entrance to UCSC - right where the bike trail begins, along
the old rickety fence. Once again, there were 2 males and 1 female
foraging along the bike trail.
Cheers,
Tonya

Subject: MBB: Orchard Oriole
From: Madeline Spencer <mmfrodo(AT)cruzio.com>
Date: 1 Feb 2002 12:00pm
Thanks to Roger Wolfe's appearance and keen eyes, I finally saw the orchard
oriole Friday AM about 10:30. It flew from the willows to the low
eucalyptus overhanging the trail near marker 3 at Natural Bridges and posed
in the tree long enough to give us a good front and back view. So it's still
there. The mixed flock of yellow rumps, bushtits, chickadees, American and
lesser goldfinch have been abundant each time I have visited. A gopher near
us was venturing from his hole to bring in grasses. Good view of brown
creeper along the trail near marker 6 as well as the song of a wrentit.
Two days ago on the road right below marker 3, I had a long look at a
foraging Bewick's wren who sated himself on insects and then perched on a
low bush limb and sang heartily for several minutes. Also saw Hutton's vireo
along with ruby-crowned kinglets-- nice comparison.
The black-throated blue warbler is still at my feeder though less
frequently, but the Costa's left after January 16 when the cold snap
started.

I ran across Roger Adamson's post from CV Birds on the CA Birding Lists =
Digest regarding how to access daily reports on the search for the IBWO. =
As the URL he gives us is outrageously long I went to Google.com =
instead, entered Ivory-billed Woodpecker and voil=E0, a plethora of =
