Weather:
Dense fog in am precluded an on-time start. Warm temps and a still
multiple-foot (in the woods) snowpack produced unexpectedly persistent, and
dense, fog. Anxiously anticipating a big flight on perfect SSW winds, I
(Derek) got to the count site at 11:15 EDST, despite continued dense fog
and near zero visibility. Undue optimism and good conversation kept Casey
and I on the hill, despite the conditions. Occasional quick breaks in the
fog would reveal one of the fields in the distance teased us repeatedly.
Fog finally began to lift at about 1:30 EDST and a local Turkey Vulture
appeared at 1:45. First migrant of day was a Coop at about 2:15 EST. Fog
had lifted completely, and there were even a few breaks of sun, but it
seemed too late to get a flight going. Meanwhile, light rain beginning
around 4:20 EDST brought the count, and our optimism, to a close for the
day.
Raptor Observations:
The highlight of the day was watching an adult Bald Eagle (probably male)
dogfighting with an immature Bald (prob female)out towards the Royal River
area.
Non-raptor Observations:
Other birds deemed to be migrating:
13 American Robins
62 Common Grackles
1 Red-winged Blackbird
25 Canada Geese
2 American Black Ducks
Plus:
An afternoon visit from 16 Bohemian Waxwings, making their daily rounds to
feed on Common Juniper.
Predictions:
Strong W or NW winds with cooler temperatures.

From: Reid Scher <rscher34(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 1 Apr 2008 6:16pm
Today between 4 & 4:30 pm in the median strip crab
apples on Franklin Arterial Portland were at least 75
waxwings. i had to drive around and park in a housing
lot so my view wasn't the greatest but the ones I
could definitely see clearly were bohemians.
In Windham wood ducks have shown up this week and are
increasing in numbers each day. Also had r-n neck
ducks, a male bufflehead & the female g-w teal
continues daily. Am tree sparrows also made their
debut. No fox sparrows yet.

Hi all,
Dane Ferrell and I had 100+ SNOW GEESE in Merrymeeting Bay yesterday
afternoon, as viewed in the distance from the mouth of the still-frozen
Abagadassett. The quantity of birds was only made apparent when a BALD EAGLE
pass low over the group, putting them up into the air. Was this the flock of 120
birds that passed by the Bradbury Mtn Hawkwatch a few days ago?

Yesterday at work we had a catastrophic server crash... so I went
outside to get some air and saw an American Kestrel in a tree behind on
Baxter Blvd right where the sidewalk splits to take you behind the
Hannaford.
=20
When I got home, I saw a few Cedar waxwings (about 8) in a tree in a
small park in Biddeford between Maine Street and Franklin behind the
diner...then as I watched them I saw 4 Bohemian Waxwings come flying
over, followed shortly thereafter by a large flock of Cedar Waxwings.=20
=20
They were NOT shy! I was so close to some of them I was worried that I
might get berry juice on me ;)
=20
It was really cool to have that vantage point too... they were hopping
over me so I could see that the Bohemians have a rusty brown patch under
their tail feathers and to see the two species in the same tree was a
treat too. It really makes all of the differences so much more
noticeable.
=20
Lots of people walked right by the trees and were more puzzled at some
guy starting in the trees, sometimes with binoculars then what I could
be looking at. Its amazing how oblivious some people can be to their
surroundings.
=20
This morning as I pulled up Center Street in Portland towards Monument
Square I saw a bunch of pigeons scatter and a raptor swoop over top a
building on the corner of Free and Center Streets. When I parked in the
garage I got a great view of the Hawk eating on top of the building. I
think it's a Cooper's or Sharpie, but I need to get a better look at the
video I shot. Here are some stills. Unfortunately the camera takes
pics only at VGA resolution... if you want to see the video, I can send
it to you via yousendit, just let me know.

Song sparrows showed up yesterday and today there was an interesting
tableau of redpolls, juncos, song sparrows, and robins in the yard.
I don't think an earlier message about a killdeer visit posted, but
forgive me if this is a repeat. On Sunday we had a killdeer explore the
perimeter of the one uncovered circle of grass a few times, then lift
off. I'm still wondering if it was one of last summer's shrieking birds.
I heard it calling yesterday, but I haven't seen it on the lawn again
(which now has a great deal more grass exposed).

Hello Maine Birders:
=20
Despite the chilly breeze, there was good turnout this morning by the
birds and birders. We enjoyed close, sunlight views of a small flock of
Northern Pintails as they winged by us. Eventually they touched down on
the river and we enjoyed them through the scope. We had several looks
at an adult female Northern Harrier. That is the fourth day in the last
seven that I have seen an adult female. I suspect she is hanging
around. The feeders are really hopping for sparrows right now; the Fox
Sparrows continue. A pair of Green-winged Teal was "peeping" at the
river's edge. An adult Northern Shrike hopped from perch to perch in
the north meadow singing its series of gargles, buzzes and wheers. It
time I see one now I wonder if it will be the last time for this
spectacular winter. No sign of phoebes for the first time in three
days.

Ran into a person from DEP (Christine/Christina?)
this AM looking over Pelreco. She took some photos
and had an old aerial map to compare to. She was
having some difficulting identifying the encroachment.
She seemed to identify a ditch that more or less
defined the boarder but was difficult to tell. It
does appear there is some encroachment.
According to the owner of the building the tenant
who has all the trucks and stuff are moving out so the
big equipment will be gone soon.
One thing I did notice too was that there are a
number of abandoned vehicles including the bus and all
right on the marsh. Hopefully they will be gone as
well.
Not a whole lot to report. My FOY Cormorant, Horned
Larks, and nearly hit a Great Blue crossing the road

I had a very quiet? winter in my back yard.
Frustrating when I was reading about everyone else's Irruptives...oh well.
I had only the usuals. except for one?brief visit (like 30 seconds)
from a mixed flock of GFs and redpolls in January.
This week, Several birds have reappeared.
Purple finches at feeder and one signing his heart out at top of tree.
Gold finches?
Small red/brown?sparrows (Fox? I haven't tried to ID as I was rushing out the
door.)
Juncos under feeders.
There have been large numbers of Robins in flocks everywhere in the area.
I have seen/heard mixed flocks of Grackles/blackbirds but numbers seem way down
from previous years. And last year seemed down from previous years as well.
Even 3 years ago the migratory flocks were?fairly?large in the trees around my
house and
made enough noise that in the early morning that their racket would wake me...
I hoping its just that they are migrating?elsewhere in the state and not that
numbers are
radically falling everywhere.

have about 6-8 in the summer come together. Also a pair of TUFTED TITMOUSE that
have hung out all winter and still are here. They sure like the shelled
peanuts I throw out. Many, many REDPOLLS and I can't seem to keep the thistle
bags full.
I'm also seeing more hawks out on the power lines and trees along 95 north. I
think they are Broadwings but also think one was a Red Tail as well. Hard to
get a good look when driving along.

From: Joanne Stevens <joshawk(AT)maine.rr.com>
Date: 3 Apr 2008 8:00pm
In addition to the birds listed by Stella, we (Marie Jordan & Co.)
saw a DC Cormorant behind the Nature Center and 2 Great Egrets, a GB
Heron and a Mink at Dunstan Landing.
We had great looks at a male N. Harrier and a male A. Kestrel
hunting along Boom Rd. in Saco. Gorgeous birds.
Fortunes Rocks produced another male N. Harrier and a single Tree
Swallow.
An Eastern Phoebe and an adult Cooper's Hawk were seen in the area
across from Hattie's.

Subject: [MAINE-BIRDS] Rusty BB in Brooksville and more
From: Leda Beth Gray <LBG2DD(AT)earthlink.net>
Date: 4 Apr 2008 12:10pm
Spurred on by the request from e-bird, Sal Rooney, Dave Drake and I
went looking for Rusty Blackbirds this morning and found 4 in South
Brooksville in the same location we had them on the Christmas Bird
Count. There were at least ten RW Blackbirds in view but more hidden
in trees and scrub from the sounds I was hearing-- maybe more rusties
too. A No. Pintail joined many mallards in a nearby pond. The
location was the coastal road near Blueberry Cobble Lane. Several
cowbirds and starlings were around also.
Other birds of note on our outing this morning include an Eastern
Phoebe at the marsh past the end of Cemetery Rd in Sedgwick, a pair
of American Kestrels hunting in a field along Ridge Rd in Sedgwick
and in the West Sedgwick Marsh, 10 Ring-necked Ducks, 8 Hooded Mergs,
3 Song Sparrows and a Great Blue Heron. Not too far up the road a
Bald Eagle flew over.
Lots of robins about in fields in the area.
Best regards,
Leda Beth

Subject: [MAINE-BIRDS] Cobb. Stream entering Pleasant Pond
From: "Eric Hynes" <ehynes(AT)maineaudubon.org>

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Hello Maine Birders:
=20
A good spot to check for waterfowl this time of year is the bridge over
Cobbosseecontee Stream where it spills into Pleasant Pond at the
Litchfield - West Gardiner town line. In Litchfield it is called Plains
Road then you cross the bridge and it becomes Pond Road. The large hay
field on the north side of the stream has been hosting a flock of Canada
Geese for awhile. I scoped them this morning and saw four individuals
that appear to be from one of the smaller, darker subspecies of Canada
Geese but not Cackling. Don't ask me which subspecies. They had
slightly smaller bills proportionally, a shade darker chest and about
1/4 smaller in overall size. They mostly stuck together as the flock
grazed across the field. I recommend a scope for this spot because many
of the ducks were at the edge of Pleasant Pond. See the eBird list
below. =20
=20
Earlier this week I had a conversation about how rarely you get to see
adult male Northern Harriers. I guess I just needed to talk about them.
While walking the dog this morning one stooped into my neighbors field
then a second was coursing over the field at the Plains Rd bridge. =20
=20
The powerline that crosses I295 at mile 33 had an Osprey sitting on an
old nest today.
=20
Good birding,
Eric

Thank you, Eric, for reminding me with your report that two of my co-workers
at Coastal Mountains Land Trust were at our Beech Hill Preserve in Rockport
yesterday, and they reported seeing a male harrier floating over the fields
there. I too seem to see mostly females (or juveniles in fall).
This morning as I was heading out my front door I was greeted by a lovely
trilling chorus of juncos. A large flock was passing through my neighbor's
yard.

My first red-wing of the year, finally, a single female under my feeder,
dwarfing the dozen juncos there.
Also the same day, for the first time, I saw a turkey displaying...fanned
tail. It was one of the 20 or so that have been coming through my yard forever.
He came up close to the window for an up close and personal look for me at his
comical face/head...mostly red. Much better than an illustration in a bird
book!
I rarely get out birding, so have to take what I get in my yard.
Usually at home (NYS) I would hear flocks of redwings "ok-a-reeing" in
marshes in March.
But all I've seen this spring are starlings, when I have gotten out, here in
southern Maine.
The Fox Sparrow and the tree sparrow were back today, though.
Forgive the trivial report;kudos to all you who are out there seeing the
great birds.
Juncos are sweet.

American Kestral sitting on the telephone wires near Flaherty's Farm. My first
stop at the Audobon Nature Center allowed for some good views of about 30 or so
Snow Geese, along with a Great and Snowy Egret, a Northern Shrike and several
Green Winged Teal.
Then at the Eastern Trail I had a FOY Eastern Phoebe and some more Green
Winged Teal and Red-winged Blackbirds and a Great Blue Heron. The highlight of
the day however was watching a Barred Owl flying around the marsh only to be
distracted by an even closer look at a Peregrine Falcon. As I followed the P
Falcon it went right at the Owl and the two grappled for a brief moment before
going their separate ways. I've never seen that before, thought it was pretty
interesting. All and all it was a great day to be out.

I was pleased to see the first Osprey of the year standing on its nest next
to I-95 in Fairfield yesterday morning. However, the redpolls (probably
including my Hoary) were here yesterday morning but have not appeared today.
Maybe winter really is over.

I had a few minutes to kill in Saco so I went down to the area around the Saco
Yacht Club and discovered 2 Eastern Phoebe in the trees across from the
treatment plant on the Riverside walkway. Nothing interesting on the river,
though.

I just returned from a walk in Acadia National Park with my daughter, Anouk.
A lone White-winged Scoter was in the company of an alternate plumage Common
Loon, which were both well out of the way of the two surfers playing in the
big waves. At Thunder Hole, a raft of about 40 Common Eider had five Black
Scoters mixed in. A Common Raven flew over...a sight that seems to be on
the decline on Mount Desert Island. Is anyone else seeing a decline in
ravens? Lots of Song Sparrows during the course of our walk, perhaps 30 or
more. And loads of American Robins on the Schooner Head Road as we left the
Park.
