Subject: [MAINE-BIRDS] Maine Birding Trail: Central Maine results
From: "Bob Duchesne" <duchesne(AT)midmaine.com>
Date: 13 Apr 2008 1:11pm
Thanks to the eighteen people who responded to this week's survey of Central
Maine priority sites. The area from Lewiston through Bangor does not have
many sites of statewide significance, but each community certainly has its
local favorites. With 12 positive responses, Sabattus Pond deserves its
notoriety. Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary and Pine State Arboretum received 11
and 10 votes respectively.
Apparently more people are aware of the boat ramp on Messalonskee Lake than
I had presumed, since 8 folks checked it off. The Kennebec Highlands,
Goodwill-Hinckley, Sunkhaze Meadows NWR, and the Orono Bog Walk were all
mentioned by at least a third of respondents. However, I received only one
positive response each for Newman Hill Preserve (aka Taylor Bait Farm) and
Leonard's Mills - both places that can be very birdy.
Up next: Moosehead and Western Maine
By the way, this may also interest you: month after month, the boreal
specialties page is the most heavily visited page of the Maine Birding Trail
web site. There appears to be a lot of national interest in Maine's Boreal
Chickadees, Black-backed Woodpeckers, Spruce Grouse, Gray Jays, etc. I've
spent the morning sprucing up the page at
www.mainebirdingtrail.com/boreals.htm.
Best,
Bob Duchesne

Subject: [MAINE-BIRDS] Maine Birding Trail: Western Maine
From: "Bob Duchesne" <duchesne(AT)midmaine.com>
Date: 13 Apr 2008 1:12pm
Greetings once again,
The Maine Birding Trail is nearing its official launch. The Department of
Conservation has received a Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund grant to produce
birding trail brochures later this year. The brochures will have room for
about 80 sites. Many more sites will still be described in print and online
in the near future.
At this time, I would like to give birders familiar with the Moosehead area
and Western Maine a chance to weigh in on selecting their favorite sites.
The brochure will likely have room for about 10 sites. I've posted a
checklist online at www.mainebirdingtrail.com/Priorities.htm, along with a
few notes and preliminary grades for each site. If you're interested, check
off the sites that you think will offer the best birding experiences for
visitors and natives. The Moosehead area is a particular challenge, since
some of the best areas are along roadways rather than in parks or preserves.
(Plus, I've skipped some good sites on Plum Creek land in an attempt to be
prudent.)
Please add any additional comments at the bottom, including any other sites
that ought to be considered. Optional: add your name and e-mail address -
otherwise, this information is not sent by the form. The survey will stay up
for a week and I'll share the results next weekend.
Best,
Bob Duchesne

Subject: [MAINE-BIRDS] Birding at 65 (mpg not my age)
From: "Liz Sayre" <esayre(AT)earthlink.net>
Date: 13 Apr 2008 4:58pm
This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

Just back from a quick round trip from Jonesboro to Portland with no time to
stop. Not my favorite way to bird but there were some interesting birds
seen along the way:
Multiple turkey vultures Liberty west and south on both days
Saw between 30 - 35 wild turkeys, again in Liberty on both days
Saturday afternoon brought a single male Northern Harrier on Rte 3 just
outside of Augusta
scattered small gatherings of Canada Geese. There was little else to see
driving in and out of the heavy rains.
Sunday offered my first sitings of Ospreys maybe a mile or so after the I95
exit for Rte 196,
a single Snow Goose in a field on Rte 3, another male Northern Harrier just
outside of Belfast and a small falcon, probably a merlin in Orland.
Got home to find multiple woodpeckers in the maples in the front yard - 2
downy, 3 hairy and a pileated. I really love spring!
Enjoy!!
Liz

Hello all, Decided to do just a bit of birding after my morning shift, went=
over to the Rt 1 causway ("The Dike") that seperates the Middle river from=
the Machias river. The first birds I saw were a first for me in the Middl=
e river and that was 9 GREATER SCAUP! Very close to shore and had great lo=
oks at both sexes. Further up river, using my scope to view lots of ducks =
in a flooded field. There were many BLACK DUCKS, MALLARDS, GREEN-WING TEAL=
and CANADA GEESE. The best ducks though were a pair of NORTHERN SHOVELERS=
. This pair of birds was continuosly flying from spot to spot though whole=
time I was watching. Had FOY NORTHERN HARRIER (female). There were also =
a good number of BUFFLEHEAD.
Beyond the flooded field there appeared to be 4 more scaup...though they we=
re too far away for ID. Went over to East Machias and went to the causeway=
that seperates the E Machias river from a small marsh on Rt 1. There I ha=
d 9 RING-NECKED DUCKS. At Stinsons landing in East Machias I had 5 COMMON =
MERGS, many BLACK DUCKS, MALLARDS and GREEN-WING TEAL. Also had a FOX SPAR=
ROW at my feeder this morning.

On a hike with my dog early this morning on Dennis Hill in Litchfield, I

I was pleasantly surprised (bordering on shocked) to find 11 American
Kestrels along Indiana Road in West Gardiner this morning along with the
consistent adult female Northern Harrier. The remarkable thing was that
9 of them were in ONE small field on the east side of the road 1.4 miles
south of Rt. 126. I am used to seeing kestrels packed in like that in
the Mid-Atlantic in fall migration but not up here. Most were females.
=20
Rt. 126 goes along the north side of Horseshoe Pond and the townline
between W. Gardiner and Litchfield is a bridge. At this bridge I could
see ~150 Tree Swallows and one N. Rough-winged Swallow around noon
today. The Osprey pair is back at their little island nest also.
=20
A swarm of about 50 Tree Swallows was whirling over the mouth of
Cobbosseecontee Stream in downtown Gardiner this morning while a
Cooper's Hawk harassed pigeons.
=20
Puddle ducks are dropping into melt water drainage in the area.
=20
The mouth of the Abagadasset River in Bowdoinham at 1pm was impressive
with great diversity but the numbers were not even close to what was
previously reported. No doubt the numbers fluctuate with tide, time of
day, eagle flyovers, boaters, etc.

In the car yesterday on the way home from Portland I saw what appeared
to be a Peregrine Falcon over the Fore River between Sprague and
Merrill's marine. It looked like it was practicing the stoop. It was
high up, folded its wings in, dove down a short while, then spread its
wings open again... Based on size and color and wing shape I assume
it's a Peregrine, but I am not up on their behavior. Do they do such a
thing?=20

Oh, and I have a very smart squirrel hanging out by the feeder I hung
up. It climbs down the rope and chews the plastic arms that hold the
feeder up. It gnawed its way through one, I am sure when I come home
tonight the feeder will be down and the squirrel will be fat.

While tree swallows returned to the Coastal Mountains Land Trust Office on
the Megunticook River a few days ago, this morning with my office window
open, I heard a rough-winged swallow fly over. (Not daring believe my own
ears, I played the Stokes recording for comparison, and it was almost an
exact replica of what I heard). I never saw the bird, because duty kept me
inside, but I'm pleased to know it's out there. And a little earlier than
last year, too.

I would be interested in learning of any Razorbill records in June and
July from York and Cumberland counties that involve more than 1
individual.
Please respond offline.
Thanks, Peter

Saw the Shovelers again yesterday as well as a Harrier and a Kestrel.
There were a couple of birds I couldn't ID too, hoping when I pull up
the video I'll get a clearer look. But I saw at least 50 Glossy Ibis,
there were two large groups that flew in...

Went to check on the feeder this morning (to see if it's still hanging)
and when I did I saw a Cooper's Hawk or a Sharpie fly by the river and
land on top of my building. Got some brief footage of it on the roof
and then flying off in pursuit of something. The bird was crow sized if
that helps at all.

Had a wonderful walk around the property this morning,
highlights of which included Ruffed Grouse, Merlin,
FOY Hermit Thrush, and what I believe was a
Broad-winged Hawk circling high overhead, but I won't
swear to it.

Subject: [MAINE-BIRDS] Common Yllowthroat Vinalhaven Is
From: nfamous(AT)maine.edu
Date: 17 Apr 2008 3:26pm
I was on Vinalhaven Island yesterday (April 16) and saw a common yellowthroat on
the NW
side of the island. We heard a rusty blackbird about 1/2 mile from the
village.
The woods were very quiet. We heard spring peepers and saw many skunk cabbage
flowers.
The boat crossing as flat calm on the way to the island.
A partial list of the birds picked up on the crossings:
Black guillemot 15 45
Common eider 150 250
Black scoter 0 2
Surf scoter 20 0
Common loon 15 20
Sharp-shinned hawk 0 2
Long-tailed duck 10 15
Red-breasted merg 6 15
Purple sandpiper 30 0
We counted from the south and east (ocean) sides of the boat in both directions
and were
not doing a complete survey so the numbers are only relative. The tide was high
on the way
to the island and incoming low on the return trip.
Norm Famous
We also heard spring peepers
