I had a mini fall out of sparrows this morning. A flock of White-throats
were joined by one Savannah. Since my area is anything BUT the right habitat
for a Savannah Sparrow, it became #124 for my yard list.

Visitors:
39 visitors in total, including; Ella, Jamie, Benjamin, Nolan, Skip,
Paul(also known as "Kestrel Dude"), Diane, Ed, Kellie, Luke, and Heidi. By
the way Heidi, thank you for bringing Luke to the Hawkwatch; and Skip,
thank you for bringing Paul to the Hawkwatch!
Excellent spotting done by Lionel, Alan, Derek, Luke, Ed, Kellie, Heidi,
Jeff, Skip, Paul, and Jeannette(amongst others). (By the way, if i
misspelled your name Kellie, let me know when i see you next!)
Thanx to all - and please hurry back!
Weather:
Moderate to strong winds from the S and SSE all day long. Temps not bad,
but wind chill definitely a factor, particularly later in the day. Thermals
practically non-existent, but a nice updraft off of Bradbury Mountain.
Raptor Observations:
Consistent Broad-winged Hawk movement, although no kettle action to speak
of - due to the lack of thermals.
A strong day for Sharp-shinned Hawks; and nice showings by American
Kestrels and Ospreys.
An excellent overhead(and extended)look at a 3rd year Bald Eagle.
Also had an American Kestrel female fly directly overhead(maybe 20 yards
up); followed a minute or two later by a male Merlin, on the same exact
flight line. Way cool !
Non-raptor Observations:
Highlight of the day was 18-20 Bohemian Waxwings. These awesome beauties
showed up about 15 minutes before closing, and topped off another fine day
on Bradbury Mountain.
Predictions:
I predict that tomorrow is Monday.

Subject: [MAINE-BIRDS] Sparrow fallout in the north
From: Bill Sheehan <lsheehan(AT)maine.rr.com>
Date: 20 Apr 2008 8:17pm
Hi
I wanted to echo Bob Duchesne's observation of a sparrow fallout. Its
happening up here in northern Maine too.
Well.....The weather's great, so I guess its not so much a fallout, but
rather some incredible concentrations. It seems that numbers have been
building quickly over the past few days. Thanks to the snow cover there
is still almost nowhere for sparrows to feed except road sides and yards.
Here in my yard in Woodland I had 200+ Dark-eyed Juncos and about 50
other sparrows under my feeders this afternoon. I've had some big
concentrations in the past, but never seen this many sparrows here at
once. Other species in order of decreasing abundance: Song, American
Tree, White-throated, Savannah, Fox, Chipping and White-crowned. The
Juncos and Song, Fox and Tree Sparrows are singing...
I've been useless all day. Keep going to the windows and checking them
out. Put out over 5 gallons of seed today....
Bill Sheehan
Woodland, Aroostook Co.

In West Bethel I've got all the Juncoes YOU don't want and I haven't
seen a Sparrow yet.
I was so hopefull for a whitethroat tonight that I got out of my car
whistling for Sam Sam Peabody. My dog took it upon herself to take
that as an invite for a walk. At least my dog knows it is Spring.

I/we can certainly relate to Bill Sheehan's comment about being
rendered useless and continually wandering to the windows these
days....that was me on Saturday, and too much to do! I did sneak
some "time off" from the necessary work to either wander out back to
listen and watch, or stand and watch by the window.
Added to this year's yard list since Friday have been:
chipping sparrow
palm warbler
ruby-crowned kinglet
song sparrow
yellow-rumped warbler
northern flicker
brown-headed cowbird
One of the neighborhood mockingbirds had also returned as of Saturday
morning and was raucously reviewing his repertoire (an amazing
variety!) when I was out walking.....heard gobbling turkeys in the
woods, too, as well as a pileated woodpecker.
We are quite sure that the Cooper's hawks are nesting this year in
the woods on the opposite side of our house from where they were last
year. Two or three years ago, some broadwings began a nest there,
but we think they were spooked by a road construction crew that came
through (the tall pine the nest is in is relatively close to the
road) and never returned....now the Cooper's seem to have claimed it!
They have not been as obvious/visible as they were last year, but we
do see or hear them daily~when we are around.
Enjoying reading the varied posts....AND enjoying the sights and
sounds ourselves!

Yep... replying to my own post.
About the 5 gallons of seed I spread in the yard this afternoon..... I
CURRENTLY have a large black bear in my front yard, lapping up the
leftovers...Hope to get some through the window pics... Bear absolutely
unconcerned about the lights and people in the windows.
It trashed all my feeders two nights ago, so I don't have _that_ to
worry about!
Cheers

So exciting to read about all the species arriving in Maine! "Our"
Hermit Thrush was singing on Fri eve as I went out to get the clothes
off the line. I realized how much I've missed that beautiful song,
how quiet it has been! He was singing at 5 am this morning and it is
just so great to have him back.
Today as I was transplanting tomato and broccoli seedlings on the
back deck I heard a few calls from a Yellow -bellied Sapsucker, but
never saw him or even heard his distinctive tapping (which is usually
the first thing I hear from them).
Best regards,

Our resident field sparrow returned sometime Friday night/early Sat AM to greet
us from his
favorite song perch early Saturday morning. There were also several new
white-throated
sparrows and an additional fox sparrow or two singing.
I was in a wooded mountainside near Concord, New Hampshire yesterday and heard
black-
and-white warblers, hermit thrushes giving both winter and breeding season call
note types
(heard three kinds of notes from the same two birds), many sapsuckers, and a
handful of
winter wrens.
Sparrows were absent from this park area. Manchester NH has a very healthy
(dense)
house sparrow population for this declining species.

I got some great pictures and incredible footage of Loons in various
stages of their molt. One in particular was not at all shy and came
very close to me. I have some excellent video of this individual, who
the local fisherman call "Chico." You can see the new feathers growing
in and some spots that still appear bald. In the video you can see
Chico is very playful too! He gets really close to this one fishing
boat. I assume they feed him. I'll let you know when I get that video
edited.

It's that time of year when anything can happen. The ice is going out on
Pushaw Lake near Old Town today. The far side is open, and it is full of
loons - several dozen.
But, most noteworthy: there are five Red-breasted Mergansers sitting on the
ice and preening. These are the first I've ever seen in fresh water. Pushaw
often gets migrating sea ducks, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.

other was reported in northern Vermont (2 days ago!) and another in southern New

Subject: [MAINE-BIRDS] RFI: Possibly visiting Maine for Puffins,
etc...
From: B C <ngannet73(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 21 Apr 2008 8:30pm
Greetings Maine birders! I am thinking about going to
Maine this summer, as I've always wanted to. Machias
Seal Island is a place I'd really like to see as I
would love to finally see Puffins, and I really love
Razorbills. I scour the coast every year in NJ in
vain looking for alcids and rarely turn up any.
Bottom line is, I'm looking for suggestions of where
to stay, other sights to see, when is the best time to
go. If anyone knows of any vegetarian/vegan
restaurants/health food stores, that would be great
too. I know fishing is a popular recreation up there,
so I may have to starve for several days! Nothing is
definite, but I really want to get away and see some
northern birds/wildflowers. Reply off list, please,
so as not to clutter the page. Thanks so much! Bob

Light southwest in am, becoming light and variable mid-day before afternoon
seabreeze (south) kicked in. Dense fog in early am cleared out just in

am. Light haze continued throughout day. High cirrus clouds, of varying
coverage, throughout the day providing a nice backdrop for spotting birds.
Raptor Observations:
Nice, close pass by the local adult Northern Goshawk. At least two
different displaying Broad-winged Hawks now on territory.
Sharpie at 2:45 EST (3:45 EDST) was the 2,000th raptor of the season.

On Saturday I spotted Tree Swallows, this morning over the river there
were at least 4 Bank Swallows. It looks like they are going to use some
pipes in the old mill across the river as nesting sites. The pipes are
in the retaining wall in the river bank a few feet above the high tide
mark and I think they used them last year too.
=20
On the way to work there was an Osprey carrying something large and it
landed on top of the Cell tower near the turnpike entrance, so I suppose
its building a next up there. It did last year, but I do not recall it
attracting a mate last year. =20
=20
Also I have uploaded the video of the Loon probably about halfway
through its molt to yousendit. The Loon came really close to me and the
footage is pretty clear. In one instance as it devours a crab you can
see the lump in its throat after swallowing.

I spent the morning in one of my favorite areas on the northern end of
Flagstaff Lake. There's still about 8-10" of snow in the shaded areas of the
woods. The weather has been incredible lately and migrants as well as
breeders are pouring in nightly. This morning found palm warblers on
territory in several locations as well as winter wrens and loads of
white-throated sparrows. No Lincoln's sparrows yet but they should be here
any day. I wasn't able to check a reliable area for spruce grouse due to
snow. Other notables were:
Boreal Chickadee - 4
Gray Jay - 1
Black-backed Woodpecker - 2
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - several pairs
Northern Flicker - many
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - many
Golden-crowned Kinglet - many
Hermit Thrush - 4+
Ruffed Grouse - 1 drumming

Male seen from about 20 feet - very tame, unconcerned by the presence of
either me or my dog. Observed for well over 10 minutes as he searched for
food about 18 inches up from the ground on the trunk of a tree. Meanwhile a
Blue-headed Vireo and a Yellow-rumped Warbler flitted about very tamely in
the tree overhead, both in bright spring regalia. All 3 quite lovely but
the woodpecker a real thrill.

Weather:
Nice warm temps all day long. No wind early; light to moderate later;
mostly a South wind when it did blow.
Raptor Observations:
No large kettles, but an awesome day for Broad-winged Hawks.
However, Sharp-shinned Hawks and Falcons were at the very least, co-stars
of the day.
77 Sharpies; and many of the looks were point-blank. Incredible!
51 Falcons on the day. Awesome! 45 American Kestrels(again, many
short-range looks); 5 Merlins - including an excellent look at a male; and
1 very large female.
But perhaps the Bird of the day(on a stupendous Hawkwatching day), was a
Peregrine Falcon that came in from the West, and proceeded to fly right
over Bradbury Mountain(and our heads)- giving us a thrill that we will not
soon forget! You would think that this spectacular Falcon was the fastest
flying Bird on Planet Earth or something... Oh, wait; it is! Just our 2nd
Peregrine of the 2008 Count, and such an awesome Hawkwatching treat. Great
spot Brendan!!
Also, 3 immie Bald-eagles; including an extended look at a Basic I Eagle;
perhaps the largest Eagle that i have observed from Bradbury Mountain.
It was truly a joy to be on the Mountain today...
Non-raptor Observations:
Absolutely excellent Hawkwatchers on the Mountain today! Specifically, i
want to thank Brendan, Lionel, Bob D., Alex, and Becky. Without their
efforts, our numbers today(and thus our thrills), would be greatly reduced,
to say the least. With all of my heart, i thank you all...
Extensive passerine movement early in the day.

Subject: [MAINE-BIRDS] Oriole?`
From: "Ann K. Doe" <doedoe(AT)roadrunner.com>
Date: 24 Apr 2008 10:31am
I saw an orange and black bird this morning on the telephone wires which I
figured was a Baltimore Oriole since it's that time of year. I got a great
view from below of his tail spread and there was a definite black bar across
the tip - like the border on a skirt - like so many hawks have.
Neither Sibley nor Peterson mentions a black bar on an Oriole.
Ideas?

Subject: [MAINE-BIRDS] Warblers at feeder
From: William Townsend <townsend10(AT)verizon.net>

Bar Harbor Thur. 24 April...A Palm Warbler and a Pine Warbler were greedily
eating shelled sunflower seeds at my feeder this morning. They ate only seeds
although there was a suet feeder nearby.
Also at the feeder were Goldfinches, Purple Finches, House Finches,
White-throated Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Red-breasted
Nuthatch, a single Cowbird, and a male Cardinal feeding sunflower seeds to a
female.

Thank you all so much for your input! The consensus is that the bird I saw
was not a Baltimore Oriole (although the time is right) but an American
Kestrel! When I saw its tail in Sibley I was convinced it was the Kestrel.
I drove by the area again this afternoon (in part because I just couldn't
stand not to see it again and in part because I had a legitimate errand that
took me by the same spot) and there it was, perched on top of the telephone
pole, tail bobbing away. From this angle I could clearly see the hooked
beak.
I've never seen a kestrel before so this was an exciting day!

Subject: {Disarmed} [MBBA] Saw-whet Owls
Send reply to: MBBA(AT)yahoogroups.com
All,
Folks band Saw-whet Owls (NSWO) primarily in the fall on their southward
journey, but a few
hearty souls also band the northbound birds. As of earlier this week, the
northbound
migration was still strong at Whitefish Point (Michigan), with over 100 NSWO's
banded in one
night.
If our birds are following a similar pattern, then earlier Nocturnal Owl
Surveys, like the one my
wife and I did (zero NSWO's), may not represent this year's breeding population
well.
HOWEVER, last year was a cruddy breeding season here, but was very good more
centrally
in the continent, implying that if there is strong fidelity to a nesting area,
then maybe the low
NSWO numbers on surveys is representative (Greg - correct me if I'm wrong here -
I haven't
been keeping track but my impression of people's NOS reports is that there are
low NSWO
numbers). If there isn't a strong attachment to the breeding grounds, then
perhaps some of
those huge numbers of last fall's south-bound migrants may swerve this way as
they come
north.
It would be interesting to see the results of the NOS's plotted as number of
NSWO against
date - i.e. are later surveys picking up more birds?
At this point, all my nest boxes for owls are empty, including the one recently
morphed into a
Kestrel box...ya gotta hate when they clearcut all the way around your nest box
tree like
that...it's a real jaw-dropper. I'll be going up to SW Cape Breton in the next
few days to check
six boxes there.
Randy
