Folks,
I misspelled that 1st name as "Reb" and almost didn't correct myself since I
was about to comment that our locality, Lafayette Co. and Ole Miss
surroundings,
was source of 2/3 of recent responses re. this species being still present!
The other was also N MS, Grenada Co. Does this reflect "ground truth"?
Best part was that today and yesterday I confirmed that my neighborhood hasn't
been deserted after all. I heard a "tooter" both days, although they've not
been
accomodating with looks. I'd had several warm convalescent days when I sat out
enough that I thought I'd heav heard any still about; but I was WRONG AGAIN!
"Experts" most often are wrong according to a book of a few years back, which
I hope to read someday.
Marvin

Hoping to scare up an early migrant Saturday, I spent about 3 hours =
hiking the trails at Tombigbee State Park. I even went a few places =
that had no trail. Even so I turned up nothing but the locals. Was a =
nice day for hiking though. On my way home I stopped at the Tupelo =
Water Treatment Plant and the front pond was covered with ducks but =
again nothing of note. I did see a lone Green Winged Teal mixed in with =
many Shovelers.
Late today I went to the Bigbee Bottom between Nettleton and Amory in =
the hopes of seeing a Short eared Owl. I struck out on the Owl but did =
turn up a beautiful Fox Sparrow, my first of the year. The acres and =
acres of grassland has an abundance of sparrows. A few Savannah, Song =
and Swamp Sparrows were I.D.ed. Many more unknowns were glimpsed as =
they dove for cover. Gene Knight has not had his sparrow workshop this =
year and I could use some pointers. I think a few of these seen could =
possibly be Lincoln's but I'm not sure enough about the I.D. About dusk =
four Northern Harriers came in to roost as well as three Red Tails. =
This was my first Late Evening Birding trip and was very enjoyable if =
not somewhat Spooky.
