Subject: Durham Labor Day
From: Kurk Dorsey <kd(AT)cisunix.unh.edu>
Date: 4 Sep 2006 2:14pm
Birders,
I walked the Nature Conservancy land on Packers Falls Road in Durham this
morning looking for migrants. Four good ones were present:
yellow-bellied flycatcher
yellow-throated vireo
wilson's warbler (also yellow in color)
vesper sparrow (perhaps yellow in personality?)
others of note
1 kestrel
1 sharpie
1 cooper's
red-eyed vireo feeding a fledgling
song sparrow carrying food
swamp sparrow
wbnh and rbnh
And the non-avian highlight::::: 4 snapping turtles, each about the size
of a half-dollar! I suppose that they were moving from a nest down to the
Lamprey River. I have always suspected that snappers were there, but now
I know! Very cool.
A quick trip around 1B between 12 and 1 turned up about 10 birders but no
Little West African Reef Hegrets (or whatever THE bird is).

Subject: 15 Indigo Buntings, 10 Stilt Sandpipers and 153 Laughing
Gulls!
From: Stephen Mirick <smirick(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 4 Sep 2006 8:14pm
Jane and I spent a long and varied day today. Starting in Rochester, we
birded the wastewater treatment plant (we got lucky and found it open
briefly) and walked the entire trail at the trails at Pickering Ponds.
We then drove through Durham and walked the fields at Turnberry Lane in
Stratham, and then headed to the coast where we walked the trails at
Odiorne and birded along the coast to finish the day. Land birding was
not particularly exciting although we ran into a few migrants and a nice
"patch" of Indigo Buntings. Noteworthy were 2 personal high species
totals for me in one day (Stilt Sandpiper and Laughing Gull). Complete
list (86 species) in taxonomic order:
Mute Swan
Wood Duck - 4 at Rochester WWTP
American Black Duck
Mallard
Blue-winged Teal - 2 at Rochester WWTP
Green-winged Teal - 25 at Rochester WWTP. Teal were distant in center
of Meadow Pond and not counted.
Common Eider
BUFFLEHEAD - 1 female continues since 8/23 at Rochester WWTP
Hooded Merganser - 2 at Trails at Pickering Ponds
Red-breasted Merganser
Pied-billed Grebe - 2 at Trails at Pickering Ponds. Also noted what
looked like an old nest with an infertile egg at the side of it!
RED-NECKED GREBE - 6 continue from cove north of Science Center at
Odiorne Point State Lark.
Double-crested Cormorant - 28 at Trails at Pickering Ponds. (relatively
high number for location)
Great Blue Heron
Great Egret
Snowy Egret - 18 in Meadow Pond in late afternoon.
Black-crowned Night-Heron - 1 juvenile at fresh water pond along Rt. 1A
at Odiorne Point State Park.
Turkey Vulture
Osprey
Broad-winged Hawk
Red-tailed Hawk
American Kestrel
Merlin - 1 in Seabrook
Black-bellied Plover
Semipalmated Plover
Killdeer - 8 at Rochester WWTP.
Greater Yellowlegs - 1 at Rochester WWTP. Greatly reduced numbers at
Meadow Pond in Hampton.
Lesser Yellowlegs - 18 at Rochester WWTP. Relatively high count for
location.
Solitary Sandpiper - 1 in Lee and another at Meadow Pond in Hampton.
Spotted Sandpiper - 7 at Rochester WWTP
Ruddy Turnstone - 2 at Rye Ledge.
Sanderling
Semipalmated Sandpiper - 2 at Rochester WWTP
Least Sandpiper - 9 at Rochester WWTP
STILT SANDPIPER - 10 juveniles in Meadow Pond. A personal high for me
in NH.
LAUGHING GULL - 153 (!!!). 80% juveniles. This is likely the highest
recorded total for NH and 3X my personal high. Not so surprising given
the explosion in population that has occurred with this species in the
northeast. 4 were on rocks at Odiorne. 10 on beach at Jenness Beach in
Rye, and the remainder (139) were counted from Little Boar's Head moving
NORTH from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM, in groups of 1 to 7, loosely associating
with flocks of Common Terns. Where were the terns and Laughing Gulls
heading to???? An evening roost somewhere?
Bonaparte's Gull
Ring-billed Gull
Herring Gull
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL - 1 adult at first pond at Trails at Pickering
Ponds.
Great Black-backed Gull
Common Tern - Several flocks numbering a few hundred total heading north
along coast in late afternoon.
Rock Pigeon
Mourning Dove
Belted Kingfisher
Downy Woodpecker
Hairy Woodpecker
Eastern Wood-Pewee - 1 seen and heard at Trails at Pickering Ponds.
Least Flycatcher - 1 at Odiorne
Eastern Phoebe
Eastern Kingbird
Warbling Vireo - 1 at Odiorne.
Red-eyed Vireo - A few from several locations.
Blue Jay
American Crow
Common Raven - 2 flying together at Moore Fields in Durham. Unusual
location.
Tree Swallow
Barn Swallow
Black-capped Chickadee
American Robin
Gray Catbird
Northern Mockingbird
European Starling
Cedar Waxwing
Blue-winged Warbler - 1 male at Trails at Pickering Ponds
Nashville Warbler - 1 at Trails
Northern Parula -2 at Trails
Yellow Warbler
Magnolia Warbler - 1 at Trails
Blackpoll Warbler - 1 at Odiorne
American Redstart - Several for day
Ovenbird - 1 at Odiorne.
Northern Waterthrush - 1 at Trails
Common Yellowthroat
Wilson's Warbler - 1 female/immature at Trails
Chipping Sparrow
Savannah Sparrow - 4 at Rochester WWTP
Song Sparrow
Swamp Sparrow
White-throated Sparrow
Northern Cardinal
Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 1 juvenile at Trails.
Indigo Bunting - 15 in corn field at Turnberry Lane. All in one section
of corn.
Bobolink - 1 at Turnberry Lane.
American Goldfinch
House Sparrow
And the non-avian highlight of the day.........A GRAY SEAL seen in the
cove north of Odiorne!
