Subject: Capital Chapter trip- delayed start
From: RAQbirds(AT)aol.com
Date: 4 Apr 2008 9:20am
Hello everyone
I have decided to run my Capital Chapter trip tomorrow, Saturday, but to
delay the start until 9 AM due to the weather.
The plan is still to spend most of the day in the Concord area looking for
waterfowl and other early migrants so bring your boots and a snack and meet me
at the McLane Center on Silk Farm Road at 9:00 am. If you can only join me
for the morning that is fine too.

We spotted a leucistic junco this morning at the Discovery Centers feeders.
It looked like it had a white cap not unlike the chickadees black cap. We
tried to get pics, but could not get close enough for a good shot.

Subject: Great Bay south shore--Osprey, Pintails, Ring-necks
From: tbbirds(AT)comcast.net (Terry Bronson)
Date: 4 Apr 2008 4:51pm
In full wet-weather regalia (rainsuit and knee-high rubber boots,
I birded in the rain this morning in Greenland along Great Bay's
southern shore from Sunset Farm to the Great Bay Discovery
Center. It went about as expected.
No Canvasbacks, Redheads, or Gadwalls, alas.
3 minor and welcome surprises:
1 Osprey fishing off the NH Fish & Game Access point on
Bayside Road. Saw a plunge dive, and voila, 1 large fish
half as big as the Osprey being carried off for lunch, and
dinner, I suppose, too, in the direction of the Portsmouth
Country Club.
4 Northern Pintails at same location, 2 males and 2 females,
but a long way out.
125 Ring-necked Ducks in the pond between Tidewater Farm
Drive and Great Bay about 1/4 mile east of the Discovery Center.
About 100 very handsome drakes and 25 hens. I cannot recall
ever seeing Ring-necks anywhere near the bay before.
Other sightings of note:
Greater Scaup--estimated 425 seen way out from Sunset Farm,
many of which were also seen from the F&G Access, plus maybe
50 more fairly close in that couldn't be seen from Sunset Farm.
Green-winged Teal--9 males and 5 females at the F&G Access.
American Wigeon--6 males, 6 females off Sunset Farm
American Black Duck--75 off Sunset Farm, 50 at the F&G Access.
Common Merganser--2 males, 1 female at the F&G Access.
Common Goldeneye--5 males, 5 females at the F&G Access,
probably 10 more off the Discovery Center
Canada Goose--only about 30 off Sunset Farm and 20 at the
F&G Access
Common Grackle--250 along Bayside Road at the farm fields
near the Great Bay Road intersection, 75 more along Great Bay Rd.
I was taken aback at the shortness of the tails evident in maybe
25% of the birds--thought they might be Rusty Blackbirds at
first, but the iridescent purple heads and bills got me on track.
Probably just not completely grown out yet?
American Robin--1000s, all over the place in groups of 50-100.
Saw several worms being pulled from lawns. Yum! Yum!
Pileated Woodpecker--1 at Sunset Farm
Red-tailed Hawk--1 adult, resident bird, watching the Ring-necks
along Tidewater Farm Drive
White-throated Sparrow--3 at the Discovery Center near the feeders
Despite looking at many hedges and road edges, no Fox Sparrows.
I was alerted to the leucistic Dark-eyed Junco at the Discovery
Center by one of the staff, but I couldn't find it in the then steady
rain. I guess it was hunkered down somewhere.
Many places I passed in Stratham, Exeter, and North Hampton
had flocks of 50-75 blackbirds up in the treetops, predominantly
Grackles, it appeared.

From: Silver Judith <argentj(AT)yahoo.com>

Hi everybody,
I have a big grin on my face. Having chased in vain after Bohemian waxwings to
Durham and other places for the last two weeks, I have approximately 70 of them
hanging out in a tree across the street. They wait for the coast to be clear and
come down in bunches of 10 to l5 to eat berries from a neighbor's ornamental
crabtree.
Been watching them for about three-quarters of an hour. Am wet but happy.
