From: hbreder(AT)comcast.net Date: 9 Apr 2008 6:05am In case anybody missed this article in the NY Times, here is the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/30/opinion/30stutchbury.html?_r=1&scp=3 &sq=songbirds&st=nyt&oref=slogin Hilke Breder Brattleboro, VT
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Blue-winged Teal, Keene From: "Alan Johnson /R.N.Johnson, Inc." <alan(AT)rnjohnsoninc.com> Date: 9 Apr 2008 7:17am A trip to Kriff Rd. at 5:45 yieled a Red-tailed Hawk and a female Northern Harrier, but very little in the way of waterfowl. Twenty or so Mallards, a few Green-winged teal, a few Wilson's Snipe and four Canada Geese were it... We gave it a second try at 7:30 and located a male Blue-winged Teal at the end of the access road to UPS, very close to the road, in the next to the last puddle on the left going in. A life bird for us. Alan Johnson
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Bohemian waxwings, Keene From: Lorianne DiSabato <lrschaub(AT)yahoo.com> Date: 9 Apr 2008 8:22am I saw a flock of approximately 20 Bohemian waxwings in the crabapple trees just east of the David Ford dealership on Marlboro Street in Keene while walking my dog this morning. (The trees border the parking lot for the New Hampshire Community Technical College building.) This is the exact same spot I saw a mixed flock of Bohemian and Cedar waxwings in February, 2004. The birds flew (scared by my dog, presumably?) before I could ascertain by sight whether there were any Cedars in the flock. But I judged the majority to be Bohemians on the basis of size and their very distinctive call. A single very blurry digital photo I managed to take shows the characteristic Bohemian gray coloring in six of the birds. When I'd seen Bohemians at this same spot in 2004, they'd scattered when a Cooper's hawk flew by, but they return to these same crabapple trees later that same morning. So if anyone lives or works in the neighborhood, it might make for a good lunch break... --L ============================= Lorianne DiSabato http://hoardedordinaries.wordpress.com/
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Cowbirds and Swallows have arrived in Ashland From: "Timothy Charboneau" <charbs(AT)dca.net> Date: 9 Apr 2008 11:15am The Pied Billed Grebe was on the river feeding in the same stretch of water I have seen it 3 previous times. We also saw 3 Pair of Hoodies, several bufflehead and Common Mergansers. I believe we also saw some Common Golden eye but they were at the extreme range of our Binoculars. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: BIGBY Shrike, Keene NH From: "Clifford Seifer" <clifdisc(AT)gmail.com> Date: 9 Apr 2008 11:38am The arrival of Spring offers more opportunities for new human powered birds for anyone keeping a BIGBY list this year. So, naturally, it makes sense that I would add an irruptive winter bird while BIGBY birding with Lance Tanino Tuesday evening. NORTHERN SHRIKE -- 1 at Green Wagon Farm on Court St. A great BIGBY bird but Lance already had one on his BIGBY list this year so I'm just playing catch-up! Also new to the list: Mallard Killdeer Eastern Phoebe Song Sparrow Bringing my BIGBY total for the year to (I wish I had a smaller font I could type this in) 28. -- Cliff Seifer Keene NH
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: 4 Sandhill Cranes in Warner From: "Birds Etc" <BEtc(AT)NHAudubon.org> Date: 9 Apr 2008 12:03pm NH Audubon just received a phone call from someone who saw 4 Sandhill Cranes in a field in Warner yesterday evening (4/8/08). They were in a big open meadown about a mile outside of the town center by the junction of Pumpkin Hill and Old Derry Rd. The person is familiar with Sandhills and has seen them in Florida. She described the large brown bodies and red on the head. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Spring in Conway From: "Eddison, Debra - Conway, NH" <debra.eddison(AT)nh.usda.gov> Date: 9 Apr 2008 1:29pm Despite the snow on the ground that still persists, several water bodies have opened up a bit and it seems as though Spring has sprung in Conway. Yesterday 4/8/08 on West Main Street: Flocks of Redwing Blackbirds and Grackles gathered to cause a ruckus in Locust tree tops, American robins were hunting any piece of open ground they could get to and a turkey vulture soared high above. On Pequawket Pond there were 3 pairs of mallards, 1 female common merganser, and 8 Canada Geese, and 1 river otter. Although the best news is that today 4/9/08 I heard an Eastern Phoebe on Pequawket Pond. Happy Spring... Other Bald Hill birds today include returning Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, singing Brown Creeper, and numerous mixed flocks of kinglets and chickadees. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: NH Audubon Workshop: Avian Signs of Spring 4/12/08 From: "Mark Suomala" <mrsuomala(AT)marksbirdtours.com> Date: 9 Apr 2008 2:00pm Workshop: Avian Signs of Spring Saturday, April 12, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm In this program, we'll learn about early spring in New Hampshire's bird-world. By mid-April, there are many signs of spring that we can observe - Red-shouldered Hawks and American Woodcock are performing courtship rituals on their breeding grounds, woodpeckers are drumming, owls are hooting, ducks are passing through, and songbirds are singing. In the morning portion of the program, we'll learn about bird behavior in spring, and the timing of species arrivals. We'll use bird mounts and visit with the captive live-birds at Audubon. In the afternoon, we'll take a walk on the trails, or nearby, to make our own observations. Bring a bag lunch, and waterproof footgear. Be prepared to carpool a short distance. Meet at NH Audubon's McLane Center. Instructor: Mark Suomala is a veteran birder and regularly teaches about birds in NH. Cost: $20.00 M/ $26.00 NM Call NH Audubon to Register (603) 224-9909

From: Leonard Medlock <lmedlock(AT)verizon.net> Date: 9 Apr 2008 8:44pm An afternoon walk at noon yielded skunk cabbage sprouts, mushroom-looking thingies shooting spores, and a trilling Pine Warbler. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Pickering Ponds/ Strafford County Complex-Dover From: "sayoung" <sayoung(AT)metrocast.net> Date: 9 Apr 2008 9:17pm I found a Glaucous Gull next to a smudgy Iceland at the WWTP-meager waterfowl. Single Palm Warbler, Woodcock, Ruffed Grouse, 2 Kingfishers and Winter Wren at the Ponds. Most of those not new news but FOY for me.The Complex was a bit more interesting -Bluebird with an entourage of two Palms, until he decided to Harrass the Tree Swallow. Additionally Meadowlark, Snipe, Northern Harrier (much easier to identify at a distance having driven a flock of Robins at us), Sharpie, Kestrel and 3 Fox Sparrows. The American Woodcock has just become my favorite bird. In my excitement I kept depressing the shutter button and now I'd like to share: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sa_young/ Scott Young/Strafford

From: "Kevin Klasman" <kevinklasman(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 9 Apr 2008 10:49pm I saw a goose that I thought was dead, floating on a pond with its neck out straight, lying flat on the water, but with its head floating. It didn't move at all the first time I saw it. Tonight, I saw it again, but after a while it raised it's head. It's mate is nesting on a beaver lodge nearby. So is this goose sick, or tired?
