Subject: April 9 sightings--PB Grebes, G. Egret, G. Yellowlegs
From: tbbirds(AT)comcast.net (Terry Bronson)
Date: 10 Apr 2008 5:55am
Yesterday, April 9, I visited the Brentwood Mitigation Area
for the first time this year. Mostly the same birds reported
by others in the last week.
Pied-billed Grebe--2, maybe 3, 1 in Pond 6, 1 in Pond 8,
and possibly 1 in Pond 5. Just a very brief glimpse of
a neck sinking into the water at the last, never to reappear.
Great Blue Heron--13 on 13 nests. Couldn't see anything
on the 14th.
American Kestrel--a pair flying together along the power line
On the way there along Route 1 in Hampton as it crosses
the marsh just south of Route 101:
Great Egret--1
Greater Yellowlegs--2

Terry, what condition are the trails in at Brentwood? I was there a
week ago and the trail by Pond 3 was completely flooded, inches deep,
just like it was for much of last year.

From: "Birds Etc" <BEtc(AT)NHAudubon.org>
Date: 10 Apr 2008 9:07am
As of 8:00 am this morning, no Sandhill Cranes were
present at the Pumpkin Hill Road field in Warner. Joy
Bockius was on the scene before me, and hadn't seen
them either.
A quick driving tour northward into Salisbury, then
back through Webster found few fields where the
snow had melted, but no Cranes

what corridor they are using to get here.

Last night we had good luck on the Capital Chapter woodcock walk. We saw a
woodcock up close IN THE SCOPE! They say this has never been done before!
If you missed out, you can join us next week, when I'm sure Phil Brown will
top even this feat! Wednesday at 7.
Interesting side note: notice how almost every request from the list serve

I am depressed- I found the cutest little owl that had somehow gotten into
our garage and managed to tangle itself up hoplessly in an old fishing net.
It must have only been a day or so ago. I think it is a Saw-whet.
Anyone at Audubon or anywhere that could use it for educational purposes? It
is still in pretty good shape.

New Hampshire birders,
New England Hummers will again be recording arrivals of Ruby-throated
Hummingbirds in New England states. There are now two reports from southern
New England, so it is almost time to be putting feeders up! Please report the
first male arriving at your yard or feeder, and the first female, or the first
hummingbird you see in the field. Report on line at http://www.nehummers.com .
Thank you for participating in the study.

Hey all,
Just an FYI on this given that the forecast calls for rain. The trip will
go if the rain is light or drizzle, since this is unlikely to affect the
birds and may even ground some waterfowl. Heck, even bring an umbrella. If
it's much heavier I'm guessing we'll not go, but I'll be at the meeting spot
in any event since it's only a mile from my house. You can try calling, but
if the rain is light, I might have opted to walk down, meaning I'll be
leaving a little after 7.
Think drizzle!
