[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Re: Eastern Bluebird Question From: "Peter Manship" <maddog54l(AT)tds.net> Date: 12 Apr 2008 10:22am First I want to thank all the people that responded, Thanks for your help. The over whelming response to the Eastern Bluebird question yesterday was, getting food. Here is What one person had to say : Your paper wasp nest looks like a White-faced (bald-faced) Hornets nest. They do not hibernate in the nest over the winter so there is little danger to the bluebird. There may be some dried young in cells that the Bluebird is after, but I would think he/she is looking for either insects that might have recently inspected the nest or hiding in the nest (e.g. spiders, flies, etc.) or is looking for nesting material. I have over the years gathered these nests after the first hard freeze which kills off any Wasp/Hornets that haven't gone to hibernate in the ground, never really thought about the hive as a food source. I asked my friend Harry who found the nest if he had a better photo of the bird on or in the nest , but his was no better then the one I posted yesterday.. So there you have it looking for food..see the original post for link to photo of the nest with the hole that the Bluebird was flying in and out of. Thanks again and good birding! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Penacook Birds - April 12 From: "PAMELA HUNT" <biodiva(AT)verizon.net> Date: 12 Apr 2008 12:16pm Greertings all, After a moderate rain just before 8 o'clock, and no takers for my Morrill's Farm field trip, I went down there anyway and found the following: 60 Canada Geese 40 Wood Ducks 30 American Black Ducks 120 Mallards 35 Green-winged Teal* 2 Ring-necked Ducks* 2 Common Mergansers 8 Wild Turkeys 3 Great Blue Herons 9 Killdeer 1 Greater Yellowlegs* 23 Wilson's Snipe* (a personal high for this loacation) 1 Ring-billed Gull 2 Northern Flickers 60 Tree Swallows 1 Field Sparrow* 1 Savannah Sparrow* 20 Song Sparrows 200 Red-winged Blackbirds 50 Common Grackles and the usual suspects Species marked with an * would be BIGBY birds, but alas, given the rain right before 8, I'd driven to the farm. This just means I'll try getting down there tomorrow under my own power - and perhaps even turn the day into a Walkabout! Enjoy, Pam Hunt Penacook, NH
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Swallows - Durham From: "Daniel M. Keefe" <selchie(AT)verizon.net> Date: 12 Apr 2008 12:22pm First Swallows here of the year this morning. Ice went off our pond the day before yesterday and the geese are already planning nesting. Frogs making a racket at night, and I almost stepped on a Salamander in the yard. Spring is good : ) Dan Durham, NH

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Glossy Ibis alert From: tbbirds(AT)comcast.net (Terry Bronson) Date: 12 Apr 2008 2:25pm This morning about 11:15 while at NH Audubon's Brookside Sanctuary in South Hampton, I was amazed to see 5 Glossy Ibis circling over the swamp. Not finding hundreds of dead trees and downed trees with relatively little water to their liking, the birds then headed north or northeast. So be on the alert. They could touch down most anywhere east of Route 125. Also seen: Osprey--2 at nest Great Horned Owl--1 on nest with chick 4 woodpecker species (Pileated, Flicker, Downy, Red-bellied) Brown Creeper--calling frequently Great Blue Heron--11 on nests Sharp-shinned Hawk--1 flyover Tree Swallow--10 12 other common species -- Terry Bronson Hampton Falls, NH tbbirds(AT)comcast.net
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Osprey in Portsmouth's Great Bog From: donald green <donald_green(AT)mac.com> Date: 12 Apr 2008 3:36pm For the third (possibly 4th) year in a row, an osprey has occupied an ever-enlarging nest just east to the power substation at Ocean Road in Portsmouth across from the entrance to Novel Iron works. To my knowledge the nest has never produced a fledgling. Early this afternoon an osprey was sitting in the nest. Is it merely a hopeful bachelor? I would appreciate learning if a second bird is in attendance. The best view of the nest is from the lane to the substation. Look through the substation at the wooden transmission poles that go toward the Great Bog Natural Area. Don Green
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Osprey, sharpie, Cooper's: Merrimack 4/12 From: Tom Young <rustysnaketail(AT)yahoo.com> Date: 12 Apr 2008 3:30pm This morning while raking my lawn, I heard the sound of an Osprey overhead. Looking up, I also saw a Cooper's Hawk and a Sharp-shinned Hawk; using binoculars, I could see them all in the same field of view. Perhaps the Cooper's was a female, while the sharpie was a male, as the former absolutely dwarfed the latter. I also had a Common Redpoll at the feeder yesterday, as well as 6 or 8 Pine Siskins still around. Tom Young Merrimack, NH Tired of spam? Yahoo! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Wood Duck Begins Incubation From: LindaMaley(AT)aol.com Date: 12 Apr 2008 9:24pm We have an absurd number of duck nests on our one-acre suburban lot, but it's not often that we witness the start of incubation. At 7:15 P.M. today a pair of Wood Ducks arrived and the female entered the box to begin incubating the eggs that she (and possibly others) have layed over the past two weeks. Two pairs of Hooded Mergansers are already incubating, and the five or six other pairs of Wood Ducks will soon begin. We're looking at 5-6 weeks of duck traffic jams. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Woodcock at Massabesic Audubon Center From: Jon Woolf <jsw(AT)jwoolfden.com> Date: 12 Apr 2008 9:42pm On a whim, tonight I went over to Massabesic Audubon Center to look & listen for woodcock. The last time I managed to go looking for displaying woodcock, last year, I was rewarded by hearing one of the little guys from the brush in the pond field, and dimly seeing his flight display against the fading sky. This time I did better: a male woodcock in the exact same place, and there was enough light left for me to watch him scurrying over the ground and _zzznt_ing away. The only way it could have been better is if there had been enough light to get a picture, but of course there wasn't. -- Jon Woolf Manchester, NH
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Ospreys/Great Bay From: "sayoung" <sayoung(AT)metrocast.net> Date: 12 Apr 2008 10:44pm I was out sloshing in the salt marsh trying to get on a flock of shorebirds. Heard a shrill whistle close, looked up, nothing. Turned around, eyes bugged and got to witness some pair bonding. He brought her a real nice stick with a little green on the top. Not for delicate eyes. Try the set, its in chronological order: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sa_young/ Scott Young/Strafford
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, Fish Crow, Field Sparrow From: AERART(AT)aol.com Date: 12 Apr 2008 11:44pm A single Rough-winged Swallow was flying around over the small pond at the Epsom Rest Area on Route 4 in Epsom. It then sat on a light post for excellent observation through binoculars, April 12, 2008. A Fish Crow was heard again, April 12th, on Veteran's Drive, near the bridge over the Merrimack River in Hooksett. It was first heard there March 30th. There were 10 Common Goldeneyes in the Merrimack River near the bridge in Hooksett ( 7F, 3M), and 6 Common Mergansers flew over. And a FOY Field Sparrow was seen in Pittsfield today April 12th, as well as 6 Fox Sparrows and a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Also today, a Pine Warbler was singing in Manchester on Rt 114A. It stayed until we left home, just before dark. I also saw a male Common Merganser leading 4 females around, as if he was showing off the place, acting very cool! Also the usual suspects, including 20 Slate-colored Juncos, an all-time high count for me.
