From: "Eric Masterson" <EMasterson(AT)NHAudubon.org>
Date: 13 Apr 2008 12:22am
I led a trip for the Harris Center up the Connecticut River on an unexpectedly
beautiful day. Waterfowl migration tapering off, but still a few good birds,
including relatively high counts of teal and pintail at Boggy Meadows in
Charlestown. Also 7 bonepartes gulls in Brattleboro Retreat Meadows (VT). This
is somewhat peculiar given that there have not been any coastal reports. We
saw two first of year rough-winged swallows and a first of year sunburn (for me
only). Thanks to a great group of participants.
If anyone is still interested in the Star Island trips - there are four places
left for the 18th and eight places left for the 13th. I will be out of country
for ten days so wont reply to emails, but first come first served. Some people
have asked for more details which I can share as follows. The boat captain is
still in Florida so nothing firmed yet, but expect a 7am departure and a 4pm
return to dock (Rye Harbor). Both trips are weather dependent and in the
unlikely event of cancellation, I will email participants by noon of the prior
day. The captain has the final say. To make my life easier, I will not cash
checks or process credit cards until the trip is complete. That way in the
event of a cancellation, I can just tear up checks rather than having to
reissue. To confirm a place, you still need to send a check - $40 members, $45
non members of NH Audubon. This covers boat, island landing fee, but not
parking at Rye Harbor ($5 per car last year).

Subject: Tufted Titmouse vs Eastern Phoebe
From: "Timothy Charboneau" <charbs(AT)dca.net>
Date: 13 Apr 2008 8:04am
Yesterday we were walking on River Street in Ashland. We stopped to listen
to a Phoebe and a Titmouse with very clear loud songs. It sounded like they
were competing to see who could be noisiest. After a minute or so the Phoebe
crossed the road and starting singing again. The titmouse to our right
seemed to imitate a couple of "fee-bee" notes and then went back to his own
song. Has anyone else witnessed this behavior or was I fooled by a trailing
phoebe with a sore throat.

the first time I've seen Turkeys on my property. The turkey stayed

A small yellow bird that I've not seen here before made a brief visit to one of
my feeders yesterday morning. Appears to have the bright yellow throat , bars on
wings and brighter yellow above the eyes...was hoping someone could confirm
perhaps a Yellow-throated Vireo ? Photo link here:

Spring is slowly arriving in my Milton backyard - we've had a fox sparrow
since Friday (4-11). Two pine siskins and a purple finch arrived today with a
female cowbird - all within a few minutes of each other.
Saw a few male cowbirds with some red-winged blackbirds last week at a local
farm in Milton.

Subject: A few sightings over the past few days on both sides of the

From: Julie Waters <julie(AT)riverartsproject.com>

April 10: Vermont - Birding at Allen Brothers Marsh and at home feeders:
Nice looks at wood ducks, hooded mergansers, common mergansers, song
sparrows and killdeer + some amazing looks at a belted kingfisher.
At home, nice looks at a northern cardinal + a song sparrow.

April 11: Vermont - Birding at Allen Brothers Marsh, Herricks Cove
and other spots, with photos at:

At Allen Bros. Marsh, Canada geese and hooded merganser. Also,
really nice look at a full adult bald eagle, photographed through a
thicket of branches
April 12: Vermont: Home feeders & Allen Bros Marsh, NH: Krif Road in Keene:
http://juliesmagiclightshow.com/_2008-04-12.php
First Fox Sparrow photograph this year at home, hidden in bushes, but
definite a fox sparrow. Also, spotted the resident
red-shouldered/mystery hawk, and got some nice pictures of it, plus a
really nice shot of a downy woodpecker with nut in mouth.
A visit to Krif Road in Keene didn't yield much except for mallards,
canada geese, but it did yield quite a few Wilson's snipe, and a
couple nice looks at them.
Today (4/13), Allen Bros Marsh (VT) and Lower Meadows (Charlestown, NH):
The road into the Allen Bros. Marsh is currently FLOODED, so access
is limited, though you can still park before the causeway and walk in
part of way. Didn't yield a lot, though got some very nice looks at
a pair of killdeer plus a really nice FOY sighting: a small group of
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS. Kinglets were too fast to get good (or any)
photos, but the killdeer were mostly staying in one place.
This was followed by a brief visit to Charlestown which yielded a
small group of green-winged teal (all standard, no Eurasian), some
black ducks and mallards, but the real treat there was no fewer than
-sixteen- Wilson's Snipe, finally getting me a decent photo of a pair
of them:

Enjoy,

the males finally
flew away off the pond.

6 mallards: two female four males
4 Eastern Phoebes
1 Pileated Woodpecker
1 Hairy Woodpecker (f)
1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
1 Turkey
1 Winter Wren, near cattail swamp. In that area and wet woods nearby, Red

1 Common Loon--flew off across pond when I first arrived there, also reported
by a couple walking their dogs--I didn't see it again though I looked over the
course of a couple hours.
Numerous Tufted Titmice, chickadees, and especially Slate Colored Juncos.
Many small birds heard high in the trees, yellow crowned kinglets I think ,
occasional Spring Peepers and one or two Wood Frogs calling.

Subject: MIGRATION! (plus Short-eared Owl, Little Blue Heron and more
Bohemian Waxwings)
From: Steve Mirick <smirick(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 13 Apr 2008 7:54pm
Jane and I got off to a (relatively) early start this morning and we're
glad we did! The cold front that past through last night brought
northwest winds and a wonderful flight of birds along the coast this
morning. We spent half the day watching birds migrating northward along
the coast and when the coastal flight seemed to slow a bit, we spent the
rest of the day birding elsewhere along the coast and interior
Rockingham County. I ended the day with probably my best day ever in NH
for American Kestrels (139!) and Northern Harriers (36).
Partly to Mostly Cloudy
N to NW winds - 10 - 20 mph
48F - 53F
7:15 AM - 5:30 PM
MIGRATING birds from stationary spot at Fantini's parking lot on Rt. 1A
in Seabrook from 7:15 - 12:00
Good visibility to south along Rt. 1A and toward west over marsh, but no
views over the ocean or along the
immediate shoreline. Likely missed many birds moving along the beach as
later we saw migrating hawks
over the ocean. Most numbers are conservative counts.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Canada Goose - 71 migrating.
Common Merganser - 13. In about 5 very small groups moving north.
Perhaps the first time I've noted migration of this species.
Common Loon - 4. No view offshore where there were likely more moving.
Double-crested Cormorant - 110 in a few small groups.
Great Blue Heron - 17. Early morning group of 10 moving northward plus
a few others.
Turkey Vulture - 6 in one group which appeared to be migrating.
Osprey - 19 migrating. Nice spring flight.
Northern Harrier - 34. Exceptional migration of Northern Harriers. At
least 12 of these were adult males!
Sharp-shinned Hawk - 5 migrating
Cooper's Hawk - 1 migrating
American Kestrel - 102. Wonderful flight. Including 21 between 7:15
and 8:00 AM!
Merlin - 1 (FOY) migrating
Killdeer - 1 migrating
Greater Yellowlegs - 51. In three flocks (22, 25, 5) flying high and
presumed to be migrating north over the marsh.
Belted Kingfisher - 1 (FOY) moving north over dune scrub. Certainly
appeared to be migrating.
American Crow - 34 migrating
Tree Swallow - 93. Morning burst of migrating birds that fizzled out.
European Starling - 46. Starlings mixed in with blackbird flocks and
presumed to be migrating.
Red-winged Blackbird - 48 migrating.
Eastern Meadowlark - 1 flew north right over our heads.
Common Grackle - 603. Steady flocks of Grackles and Cowbirds moving
right along Rt. 1A right over our heads early. Ended by about 11 AM.
Brown-headed Cowbird - 425 migrating
American Goldfinch - 3 migrating.
Other Random NON-MIGRATING birds seen along the coast
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Good numbers of sea ducks along the coast, but didn't count due to time
constraints and relatively high seas. All 3 scoters, 2 loons, 2 grebes,
LT Duck, Common Eiders, Great Cormorants, and C. Goldeneye were present.
Wood Duck - 3
Green-winged Teal - 38 (32 in Meadow Pond in Hampton)
Black Scoter - 100 counted in tight raft off Seabrook Beach
Horned Grebe - 58 counted from one location off Plaice Cove in Hampton.
Breeding plumage (as were the Red-necked Grebes)
Northern Gannet - 1 adult off Seabrook Beach
Great Blue Heron - 12+ along the coast.
Great Egret - 5
Snowy Egret - 16 in 3 groups along the coast.
LITTLE BLUE HERON - (FOY) 1 adult with 5 Snowy Egrets in marsh just
south of Rye Harbor.
Piping Plover - (FOY) 1 off Seabrook Beach
Killdeer - 6
Greater Yellowlegs - 6
Sanderling - 80
Wilson's Snipe - 26
SHORT-EARED OWL - 1. (FOY) Spectacular bird that appeared out of
nowhere above the dune scrub in mid-morning, flopped around a bit and
disappeared as if landing in scrub south of Fantini's in Seabrook along
Rt. 1A. Not sure if this was a migrant that came in off the ocean and
landed in the dune scrub or if it had been there all day and was flushed
by a harrier. Scott Young and Gene ? and I tried to walk out to find it
to no avail.
Hermit Thrush - (FOY) 2 along shoreline of Meadow Pond.
Savannah Sparrow - 2
Then....after lunch. Inland through Greenland, Stratham, Exeter and
Kingston
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NORTHERN SHOVELER - 5. 4 males and 1 female continue at Exeter WWTP.
The most common dabbling duck at the treatment plant!
Green-winged Teal - 7 in Bodwell Farm area (Bodwell Farm fields are dry
and hardly any ducks present right now!)
Ring-necked Duck - 28. Including 22 at Exeter WWTP
Lesser Scaup - 2. Pair at Exeter WWTP
Common Merganser - 7
Osprey - 4 in Great Bay area. Likely locals.
Bald Eagle - 1 immature on Powwow Pond in Kingston.
Northern Harrier - 2. Possibly migrating.
American Kestrel - 37 feeding. Including 22 (!) over Pease Tradeport
and 7 more at Great Bay Farm.
Greater Yellowlegs - 3 at Chapman's Landing in Stratham.
Wilson's Snipe - 2 at Chapman's Landing
Fish Crow - 1 at Powwow Pond in Kingston
Tree Swallow - 61
Northern Rough-winged Swallow - 1. (FOY) At Powderhouse Pond in Exeter
with about 30 Tree Swallows.
Barn Swallow - 1. (FOY) At Powwow Pond in Kingston with small group of
Tree Swallows.
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 1. (FOY) Thanks to Patience Chamberlain for
this one!
BOHEMIAN WAXWING - 24. In single group along Rt. 85 in Newfields. No
Cedars mixed in. Getting late and this ties my personal late date.
It'll be interesting to see how long Bohemians are reported in this
incredible winter for them. There are May records, but not many.
Savannah Sparrow - 2 at Exeter WWTP

I've been going over my literature for quite some time and think I may have
watched a Pectoral Sandpiper, unlikely or a strange Least, more likely. I'm
not comfortable with any sandpiper and don't want to declare it a five species
hybrid. Characteristics: Pale broken supercilium, a bill half orange on top
and bottom, yellowish legs, relatively straight bill sometimes showing a
slight curve at the end, densely streaked dark breast that ends abruptly into
a pure white belly, no flank streaks, the centers of the coverts are large
dark triangles with pale edges, brownish cast, scapulars a bit blocky, tail
above horizon when probing, a touch of warmer brown toward rear of crest and
on shoulder, hesitate to call it roufous, wings equal length with tail. One of
the pics shows it relative to a Killdeer. 27 Wilson's Snipe and one blotchy
white and orange breasted Robin. 4 Snowy Egrets with 9 GB Herons and 2 Greater
Yellowlegs in the marsh .
Confusion: I posted a photo set of poor quality, but it may help:

Additionally: The Piping Plovers at Hampton Beach SP have dug a sandpit for a
nest amid the canine chaos. There was a pair of elated Miricks at Fantinis
Restaurant in Seabrook. An amazing number of raptors and other birds were
migrating north today.
My non-migratory report from there: 5 Gold-crowned Kinglets, 4 Great Egrets
and an Eastern Meadowlark.
