Subject: Possible Pied-billed Grebe, Herricks Cove
From: "Alan Johnson /R.N.Johnson, Inc." <alan(AT)rnjohnsoninc.com>
Date: 15 Apr 2008 9:07am
Last night, my wife and I watched a Grebe diving along the shore in front of
Herrick's Cove, Bellows Falls, VT. We were three hundred yards away on the NH
side and the setting sun was interfering with the scope. We believe it was a
Pied-billed.
This morning on our walk heard a Chestnut-sided Warbler and a White-throated
Sparrow.. did not see either... gives us something to look forward to for our
lunch walk.

Subject: finches, wrens, kinglets, oh my, in Durham
From: Kurk Dorsey <kd(AT)cisunix.unh.edu>

Birders,
I was quite pleased to see a striking male Purple Finch this morning.
There turned out to be at least 6, 3 of which were adult males. They
made a nice contrast with the goldfinches in their yellow finery.
Also present in the neighborhood were both kinglets, with the Ruby-crowned
giving that crazy song as well as its chatter.
Over the weekend, the Woodridge neighborhood produced singing Carolina and
Winter wrens.
Saturday afternoon, driving by Moore fields, there was a flock of about 40
birds that appeared to be Horned Larks.

David Govatski will present a program called Land Above The Trees - The
Alpine Zone of the White Mountains on Wednesday evening in Littleton. The
program will start at 7 PM at the Littleton Senior Center on Riverglen Drive
which is located off of Cottage Street near the Littleton Bike Shop. The
free program will feature slides of alpine plants and plant communities that
are adapted to living in a harsh environment on the Presidential Range. We
will also look at several bird species and insects that make their summer
home at treeline. For more information contact David Govatski at 586-7776.

From: John Williams <john(AT)2young.us>
Date: 15 Apr 2008 4:34pm
Today there was a female Northern Harrier at the Plymouth Airport.
It was chased by crows so it never had a shot at the ducks in the
puddle out by the weather station.
Present today were Ca Geese, Wood Ducks and Mallards.
Yesterday there were also Green Winged Teal.

Subject: Seabrook this morning: Kinglet, P. Plover, Scoters, Flickers
From: tbbirds(AT)comcast.net (Terry Bronson)
Date: 15 Apr 2008 5:02pm
Denny Abbott and I joined forces this morning for a circuit of
the Seabrook marshes. We walked out into the marsh at
Beckman's Landing and to the edge in the dunes behind
Fantini's Restaurant, looking for owls, but none were found.
We did note the following highlights:
Ruby-crowned Kinglet--1 behind Fantini's. First of year for me.
Piping Plover--1 on Seabrook Beach north of the rope fences.
First of year.
Black Scoter--70 directly off the rope fencing
Surf Scoter--35 at same place
White-winged Scoter--2 at same place, 7 a bit further south
Northern Flicker--3 at Beckman's Landing, 1 behind Fantini's.
Denny surmised this was a day they were moving.
Osprey--2 at Beckman's Landing
Northern Harrier--1 female at Beckman's Landing
American Kestrel--1 at Beckman's Landing, 1 behind Fantini's
Great Blue Heron--3 at Beckman's Landing, 1 behind Fantini's
Long-tailed Duck--13 north of the Scoters. May have actually
been in Hampton
Great Cormorant--7 on rocks near Long-tailed Ducks
Later, at home, I took a walk around the neighborhood and added
Ring-necked Duck and Red-tailed Hawk to my 2008 human-
powered year list, which now stands at 48. That, however, is at
two locations 25 miles apart since I moved last month.

departure.
From: cmsbirds(AT)comcast.net (Chris Sheridan)

I arrived at work Monday after a three day weekend and there
was still sunflower seed in my window feeder! How could that be?
It soon became apparent that the voracious Tree Sparrows
who have entertained me all winter have left. The Tufted titmouse,
chickadees, Song Sparrow and Cardinals that remain can not approach their
seed gobbling and scattering abilities!
At home in Nashua, most of the House Finches have departed; a couple pairs
remain.
I was watching a couple Turkey Vultures circle this evening around 6:00
when I was surprised by a beautiful gray male Harrier flying over. He was
heading
east toward Bishop Guertin and Salmon Brook.
I haven't seen one here in a long time.

Subject: Incubating Ducks: 2 Hoodies, 2 Woodies
From: LindaMaley(AT)aol.com
Date: 15 Apr 2008 7:30pm
A Duck Watch between 6 P.M. and 7:15 P.M. revealed the return to their nest
boxes of two female Hooded Mergansers and two female Wood Ducks (one beginning
incubation today), sometimes accompanied by males. The males quickly lose
interest once incubation has securely begun.
With 4-6 more nests under way, this is a normal year. The morning and
evening activities of ducks coincide nicely with breakfast and dinner, so I
would
heartily recommend putting a 12 foot 4x4 post in the ground in your yard (if
you are with a quarter mile of a swamp or pond) and putting up a duck box.
Don't forget the flashing and check with _www.woodducksociety.com_
(http://www.woodducksociety.com) for plans.
I cleaned out the nest of a recently-deceased gray squirrel in one of the
boxes today, and found three buried eggs. Seems like we'll have duck omelet
tomorrow.
Oh, and that Fork-tailed Flycatcher in Brighton MA, I think we saw him in
Argentina in November.

Subject: Birding at Massabesic Audubon Ctr, 04/15
From: Jon Woolf <jsw(AT)jwoolfden.com>
Date: 15 Apr 2008 7:42pm
This morning I went over to Massabesic Audubon Center to walk and
enjoy the beautiful spring weather. There wasn't much to see in the
fields besides a few Song Sparrows, a Cardinal or two, and the
increasing number of Tree Swallows. However, when I got to the lake
overlook across from the osprey blind, I found something I've never
seen there before: waterfowl on the lake! Two female mergansers,
probably Hooded; a pair of Canada Geese; and two pairs of Buffleheads
that were obviously involved in courtship.

Owl Prowl
Saturday, April 19th, 4 am
Join Steve Mirick and Dr. Arthur Borror, retired UNH Professor of
Ornithology, on this early morning field trip in search of owls and
early spring migrants in the Durham area. We will travel to local
areas in hopes of hearing (and possibly seeing) barred owl, American
woodcock and other early morning animals. The trip will conclude by
9am. Be prepared for a moderately long walk in the woods with some
wet areas. Bring a small flashlight and appropriate footwear. The trip
will meet at in the parking lot for the Durham Market Place off Mill Road
in Durham. Contact Mark Hatfield at catfishanddwen(AT)comcast.net.

Unfortunately, Art Borror will not be able to make it for the owl prowl
this weekend, so I will be leading it by myself.
Long-ranged forecast sounds nice, so hopefully the owls will cooperate!
