Re Nashville Warbler in Hooksett?: My warbler book (Stokes) shows the
spring migration line for the Nashville Warbler going right across VT and NH
on May 10 and across PA on May 1. So it does seem possible to have one
here with the warm weather we've been having and no storms.

What a joy to hear the American Woodcock peenting - starting up April 13th. I
hear at dusk and dawn. Last night I heard two separate peents. Yard
observations: April 13 Hermit Thrush (1) Juncos - a flock of 30 or so
American Robins - flock of 30+ Tufted Titmouse - a pair Northern
Cardinal - female Song Sparrow (2) White Breasted Nuthatch - a pair
Fox Sparrow (1) Hairy Woodpecker - female The regulars:
Black capped Chickadee - flock is dispersing Blue Jay Morning Dove
Noticeably absent compared to last year: Purple Finch Feeder activity
definitely minimized due to basically taking down the feeders (I still throw
out some seed almost daily - I just can't resist!) April 15 Coltsfoot
starting to appear along roadside Wild Turkey - a flock with two displaying
Toms, cleaning up the birdseed in the yard April 16 Heard Peepers and Wood
Frogs in Lyme village (approx. 550' elevation), but not by the Dartmouth
Skiway (approx 920'). April 18 Hot weather has brought out the daffodils -
I am afraid they are going to blast by with the spell of hot weather.
Fiddleheads should be right along too! Several deer grazing in back pasture
April 19 Yay - new arrivals: Purple Finch (finally!) Chipping
Sparrow Tree Swallow Enjoy the great outdoors!Peg AckersonLyme Center

Had a pair of amorous wood ducks in my small pond yesterday. Alas, they
didn't notice the duck box we put up a few years ago.
bluebirds continue - 3rd year - mom and dad shooed off their 3 daughters
weeks ago.
carolina wren continues to sing every day though I've not seen 2 together
for at least a month
wintering over white throated sparrows haven't headed north yet but I would
imagine it will be soon.
Also this week I have had the following visitors:
purple finch - several days now, males and females
pine siskin - 1 - off and on all week
fox sparrow - 1
american tree sparrow - 1
flicker - 1 - used to see them all the time year round until their
favorite tree broke in half
pair of red bellied woodpeckers - I think they live in the woods across the
street.
broad winged hawk -1 - new yard bird - seen twice coming out of a wooded
area
And chipping sparrows returned today.

Pictures of some birds I took while hiking today in Wilton, NH .
The first bird is either a female Eastern Wood Pewee or a female Eastern
Phoebe. There are two pictures of her. The male was nearby and I could not
get a clear picture of him. I also got a picture of a Towhee and a Cliff
Swallow.

Spring has arrived in the north country with a variety of sights and sounds
including: Wood Frogs quacking like ducks, Ruffed Grouse drumming, and
American Woodcock peenting.
There is still some snow in the woods in the valley and 3-5 feet in the
mountains above 3,000 feet elevation but fields are open and greening up and
Cherry Pond had ice out on 18 April.
On Friday I saw 3 Pileated Woodpeckers on a dead tree in our back yard.
White-throated sparrows are singing and dark-eyed juncos are back in large
numbers. Today we had 8 Evening Grosbeaks and 20 Common Redpolls looking for
seed that was spilled on the lawn and wondering where all the feeders had
gone to. Hermit thrushes and winter wrens are also back at Pondicherry and
today I saw 14 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers that must have arrived recently.
Also at Cherry Pond on Saturday morning was a 1st year Bald Eagle that was
adept at catching fish. In addition there were 24 Ring-necked Ducks, 6 Wood
Ducks, 8 American Black Ducks, 9 Green-winged Teal and 8 Canada Geese. Also
1 Otter, 3 Beaver, 1 Muskrat and a fresh pile of bear scat on the trail in.

Subject: Owl Prowl!
From: Steve Mirick <smirick(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 19 Apr 2008 6:07pm
This morning at the incredibly early 4:00 AM, approximately 40 hardy
birders showed up at the Durham Market Place parking lot for the annual
seacoast chapter Owl Prowl! A glorious morning with relatively mild
temperatures and no wind at all and sparkling sunshine to greet the
dawn. And a great dawn it was!! As usual, we walked in the dark out
Longmarsh Road to what is now called the "Longmarsh Preserve", which is
town owned property in Durham. Listening for owls and other wildlife,
we were treated to the continuous raucous calls of Barred Owls, a
distant Great Horned Owl, a beaver slapping its tail, peepers chorusing
as well as a Ruffed Grouse drumming.
Observers - 40
Species - 70 1

Ring-billed Gull
Herring Gull
"STRANGE-BILLED" GULL - 1. What I am now thinking is just an aberrant
1st winter Ring-billed Gull was present at the Exeter WWTP. Although it
has a plain green-gray bill, much different from a typical Ring-billed
Gull (or typical Mew Gull of this age class!), I can't find anything to
really support it as being a Mew Gull. I was hoping though! Here are a
couple of photos by Len Medlock:

Tufted Titmouse
White-breasted Nuthatch
Brown Creeper - At least one pair working on nest at Longmarsh Preserve.

I came across a pair of loons today in the center of the lake. One of them
has a yellow and orange bobber attached to the left side. I couldn't see any
monofilament hanging from its mouth, so I would guess it is tangled around the
wing or leg. It seemed healthy. Three Fish Crows were picking on an equal
number of flickers on one of the islands-veery amusing. Then lots of the usual
stuff : warblers, kinglets,Ospreys, Broad-wings, Red-shoulders, many other
hawks, Ducks, Ducks and more ducks. Not too many House Finches, maybe none!
