Subject: Wood Thrush - Vernon Dam , 4/19/08
From: "Lance Tanino" <Lance_Tanino(AT)antiochne.edu>
Date: 20 Apr 2008 11:53am
Location: Vernon Dam
Observation date: 4/19/08
Notes: Lance Tanino met me here (after I had told him to meet at
Herrick's Cove!) and we walked from the boat ramp down to the dam. We
didn't have any real surprises, but it was a lovely day and the birding
was nice. After a lateish start (7:00), I headed west to look for Sandhill
Crane, Bohemian Waxwings, waterfowl along the Connecticut River, and early
arrivals. It was an incredibly warm (up to almost 80 F) and calm day, with
no weather to force down waterbirds and no obvious migrant push in
general. However, spring is in the air and there were signs of a number of
birds on territory. OTHER FAUNA: LEPS: Eastern Comma - 1, presumed
Eastern; Mourning Cloak - 1. WEATHER: Calm, clear (high stratus), warm
(70-80 F).
Number of species: 27
American Wigeon 1 female; roosting with Green-winged Teal
American Black Duck 2
Mallard 2
Green-winged Teal (American) 78 tucked in along the riverbank
below the dam
Double-crested Cormorant 3
Red-tailed Hawk 1 im
Great Black-backed Gull 1 SY; same bird seen earlier
Belted Kingfisher 1
Downy Woodpecker 2
Hairy Woodpecker 1
Pileated Woodpecker 1 overdue state bird!
American Crow 3
Northern Rough-winged Swallow 1
Black-capped Chickadee 1
Tufted Titmouse 1
White-breasted Nuthatch 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 singing
Wood Thrush 1 low chuckle call heard well about four times; I
tried to see the bird but was unable to. Very early (record early?), and
it is too bad I couldnt see it.
American Robin 3
Cedar Waxwing 12 calling silently while perched in pines and other
trees along the riverbank; we checked carefully for Bohemians to no avail.
My only waxwings of the day.
Yellow-rumped Warbler (Myrtle) 1 singing
Pine Warbler 3 singing
Song Sparrow 4
Red-winged Blackbird 10
Common Grackle 2
Brown-headed Cowbird 4
American Goldfinch 1

Subject: Chickadee Question
From: Justin <justin00hay(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 20 Apr 2008 1:56pm
There is one or more chickadees I've seen on several occasions the last 2-3
weeks that looks different from any other i've ever seen. It's head is darker
and it has an extra narrow black band across its mid-breast, in addition to the
one normally at throat level.
I looked at Sibley's and none of the other species appeared to match. Is
there a likely candidate or perhaps this is just a mutant? I wish I had a good
picture but I don't have a quality camera (3x zoom only).... if I can get one
I'll post it.
Any thoughts on what this might be?

Subject: Black vultures over Newbury, NH
From: <christianjmartin(AT)verizon.net>
Date: 20 Apr 2008 2:34pm
I was in the driveway shooting baskets with my son at 2:10pm today when 2 black
vultures appeared in the sky above, soaring and circling together and drifting
gradually northwestward, generally parallel to I-89, towards Sunapee and Croydon
on light southeast winds. Wings with pronounced "fingers" at primaries, short
stubby tail, no visible difference in coloration between leading and trailing
edges of wings. New yard bird, town bird, and county bird for me!

Subject: Keene airport & Willard Pond migrants; amphibians
From: Phil Brown <downtownpab(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 20 Apr 2008 9:17pm
Yesterday morning's 'Monadnock Earth Festival' walk to
the Keene Airport yielded many of the common migrants
that Ken mentioned from Friday, but numbers of swamp
sparrows, palm, pine & yellow-rumped warblers, and
kinglets are on the rise. We also saw 30 green-winged
teal, 9 ring-necked ducks and a great close look at a
female hooded merganser. Also heard calling from one
of the ponds about halfway down the road were apparent
leopard frogs, but we couldn't find any of them. I'd
appreciate if anyone can confirm this.
Today, along the Spur Trail, during a Willard Pond
volunteer day, I heard/saw the following:
common loon - 2 calling from Willard Pond, where they
breed
blue-headed vireo - 3 singing from near parking lot
winter wren - 3 singing
yellow-bellied sapsucker - 4
pileated woodpecker - 3
yellow-rumped warbler - 8
osprey - 1 flyover, calling
broad-winged hawk - 10+ in 5 minutes of sky-watching
evening grosbeak - flyover
We've added 22 spring migrant songbirds since 4/11, a
barred owl continues to call daily from behind our
house in Nelson, and 2 woodcocks are displaying near
the center of town. I just witnessed a spotted
salamander and 2 wood frogs making their way across
Nelson-Harrisville road to a marsh, unaided by soil
moisture, so heads-up to those crossing amphibians.
