Subject: favorite CD bird song

After years of listening to tapes (Peterson's Birding by Ear - green
cover and yellow cover) each spring because I cannot remember the
warblers and a few others - I have to buy CDs for my car and IPod - I
realize there are at least a couple of editions of bird song learning
CDs - Watson? and Cornell - both Peterson guides - does anyone have a
favorite - does it matter? I am "advanced" for many calls and songs
but when it comes to warblers struggle with elementary - my eyes used
to be great - thank heavens my ears are ok for now - I need all the
help I can get with identifying anything!
Thanks, Edie

Subject: Sanderlings in Hampton, Brookside Owl Chick Maturing
From: tbbirds(AT)comcast.net (Terry Bronson)
Date: 22 Apr 2008 4:42pm
Two hours this morning in Hampton. Not much to report:
Sanderling--85 or so at low tide on the beach just north
of Great Boars Head
Long-tailed Duck--40 on south side of Great Boars Head
White-winged Scoter--18 with Long-tails
Red-breasted Merganser--30 off end of Island Path
Great Blue Heron--4 off Island Path, including 1 dark-billed,
very dull-colored immature
This afternoon, 2 hours at NH Audubon's Brookside
Sanctuary in South Hampton:
Great Horned Owl--Junior is either getting very dirty or
is starting to get some of his brown feathers. Mom is
looking very bored. Both were panting visibly in the heat.
I really had my first good side-view look at an adult GHO--
really surprising with punky looking head feathers, a flat
sloping forehead, and very fat looking. Hardly recognizable.
Great Blue Heron--10 on nests
Tree Swallow--10 at least, some appearing to go into
nest holes
Osprey--2, with 1 on nest, but flew off to a nearby tree
when it saw me. Approach cautiously and try to stay
behind the tree line to avoid spooking this bird.
Belted Kingfisher--1 male with a small fish
Northern Flicker--1 male and 1 female, not together but
within easy hearing distance of each other
Hawk species--1 fast flying brownish hawk that I barely
saw zoom by. I suspect a Cooper's, since it was flying
through the trees about 15 feet off the ground at a spot
where I saw a Cooper's last year.
Black-capped Chickadee--1 pair living dangerously, having
chosen a nest hole barely 1 foot off the ground on land
adjacent to the rear-most swamp. With maybe 200 dead
tree trunks to choose from, they chose the absolute shortest
and most accessible to predators. Good luck, brave Chickies!
