My travels will take me near Munroe on Monday. Can someone provide me with
details on where in the vicinity of Plains Road the Sandhill Cranes are
frequently seen and best time of day? thank you,

The crane has been behind the first farm on the left as you start up Plains
Rd. In years past, it seemed to prefer the second farm, and frequented the
fields behind the cemetary on the right. It has been very hit-or-miss so
far this year. Even though it is open fields, there are lots of hiding
spots. I have been up to Monroe to do some work on a house there and have
made several stops up on the Plains Rd and usually come up empty. It has
been there from early AM to near dusk. It is very rust-colored this Spring.

Subject: Keene Cemetery: Chimney Swift and more.
From: "Kenneth Klapper" <Kenneth_Klapper(AT)antiochne.edu>
Date: 26 Apr 2008 10:21am
I birded from 7:45-9:15am this morning. It was quiet overall but still
birdier than yesterday. A FOY bird for me: Chimney Swift (just one!) -
hadn't noticed any reported yet. There were 2 Savannah Sparrows and 2
female Purple Finch. A Blue-headed Vireo sang on the Greenlawn end of the
Cemetery (near Page Street). The American Bittern continued, calling
until after 8am. No sign of the C. Redpoll today, though I did see her
yesterday, around 10am.
Also seen/heard: Mallard, Canada Goose, Turkey Vulture, Downy WP, Flicker,
RC Kinglet, Chickadees, Tufted Titmouse, WB Nuthatch, Am. Crow, Blue Jay,
Starling, Pine Warbler, Phoebe, Chipping Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow, WT
Sparrow, Song Sparrow, BH Cowbird, RW Blackbird, Grackle, Cardinal, Am.
Goldfinch, House Finch.

Subject: Birding at Massabesic Audubon Center, 4/26
From: Jon Woolf <jsw(AT)jwoolfden.com>
Date: 26 Apr 2008 12:08pm
I went for a long walk at Massabesic Audubon Center this morning, all
the way out to Battery Point and back. Massabesic is almost always
inexplicably light on critters of the avian sort, and this morning
was no exception; I totaled only a dozen or so species, and only
three interesting ones:
1) a Ruby-crowned Kinglet
2) a Pileated Woodpecker flying over.
3) a Blue-headed Vireo singing in a stand of pines

Subject: Stratham VA Rails and WC Sparrow
From: tbbirds(AT)comcast.net (Terry Bronson)
Date: 26 Apr 2008 12:37pm
The 2 Virginia Rails reported by Len Medlock recently
at Chapman's Landing in Stratham responded readily
to my poor imitations of their calls today--both the
grunting and kedek calls. They also made the sort
of whinney call.
And best of all, one of them popped out on top of the
row of dead cattails for about 10 seconds--just enough
to ID it for sure.
Later I stopped at the River Road spot at Route 108
across from the Mobil on the Run station and found
the adult White-crowned Sparrow still there.
Most of the morning was spent at the Nature Conservancy
Lubberland Creek Preserve in Newmarket. Nothing
too unusual--a few Greater Yellowlegs and Green-winged
Teal, an Osprey on the nest platform, and about a dozen
usual suspects. No Warblers, Vireos, Flycatchers, or
other migrant passerines.
Also in Newmarket, there were 9 Turkey Vultures circling
over Route 108 at the Durham Town Line. You can bet
I checked carefully for a Black Vulture, but no dice.

Hi all,
I glanced out the window a little while ago and saw a hummingbird darting
away from our feeder. I didn't get enough of a look to tell if it was a male
or female. I'm sure that this is early for our feeders, but admittedly we
haven't kept very careful track.
Good birding!

Subject: Penacook Birds - April 26
From: "PAMELA HUNT" <biodiva(AT)verizon.net>
Date: 26 Apr 2008 5:19pm
Greetings all,
After a week away and a couple of days in the office during gorgeous weather,
I was finally able to get out and do some spring birding today, and what a
great day for it it was!
In the morning the census tallied 46 species, a bit low for the date but I
won't complain. Highlights were 8 BIGBY birds:
Blue-headed Vireo (6)
N Rough-winged Swallow (2)
Barn Swallow (1)
Yellow-rumped Warbler (8 - seemed low but I checked against 2006-07 and it's
about right)
Palm Warbler (2, Bog Road)
Ovenbird (1, Bog Road)
Northern Waterthrush (2, Bog Road)
Swamp Sparrow (4, Bog Road)
Also of note: 2 lingering juncos, 28 Chipping Sparrows, 14 White-throated
Sparrows, 10 Purple Finches, and the complete absence of chipmunks. I've only
seen 2 of the latter so far this spring, and am starting to wonder if they had
a bad winter - survival-wise.
After a bit of breakfast, I biked down to Morrill's Farm where I birded for
about 3 more hours with Becky Suomala. On the way I added a BIGBY Brown
Thrasher (which I likely wouldn't have heard if I'd been in a car!).
Highlights of our 4 mile walk included:
3 Blue-winged and 11 Green-winged Teal (BW was another BIGBY Bird)
5-6 Vesper Sparrows (also a BIGBY)
45 or so Savannah Sparrows
5 Blue-gray Gnatchatchers (another BIGBY, looked like 2 sets of birds were
paired)
1 each DC and Great Cormorant on the Merrimack River
3 Wilson's Snipe
My BIGBY now stands at 98, 3 shy of tying the the end-of-April record of 101
set in 2006. If we get some showers tonight, maybe a couple of goodies will
appear on the Island tomorrow!
In the insect world, I saw three species of butterfly today: Mourning Cloak,
Cabbage White, and a probable Eastern Comma. However, trumping these was an
unfortunately unidentified DRAGONFLY at Morrill's Farm - probably a baskettail
of some sort.
And now prepare for April Showers!

We have a few chipmunks now at home in Hollis. I thought we might not have
any after watching a mink make off with 3 chippies a while back. I watched
it make 3 trips back and forth...probably cleaned out the nest.
