Subject: 7/4 am whale watch--correction

A minor update, we learned that our Pomarine Jaeger might actually be a near
adult Parasitic Jaeger--those subadult jaegers sure are fun to ID. Thanks to
those who viewed the photos. Peace, and out.

I took advantage of this beautiful summer morning to walk into Head's Pond
off Route 3 in Hooksett. The trail runs along an abandoned railroad bed
past wetlands and open water to a former gravel pit where there are several
more ponds. There is quite a variety of habitats, as can be seen from this
list of species seen and heard today:
Common Loon
Falcon, sp. (either a Merlin or a Peregrine)
Mourning Dove
Eastern Kingbird
Least Flycatcher
Barn Swallow
Rough-winged Swallow
Blue Jay
Black-capped Chickadee
Gray Catbird
American Robin
Veery
Cedar Waxwing
Red-eyed Vireo
Warbling Vireo
Chestnut-sided Warbler
Prairie Warbler
Yellow Warbler
Common Yellowthroat
Red-winged Blackbird
Scarlet Tanager
House Finch
American Goldfinch
Eastern Towhee
Field Sparrow
Swamp Sparrow
Song Sparrow
Species Total: 27

I photographed this bird near Milne Pond at Massabesic Audubon Center this
morning and I am not certain what species it is, but I'm leaning towards
Yellow-throated Vireo even though the yellow spectacles are missing.

I also photographed this bird in the same tree shortly before the first one
mentioned. The looks aren't great but I am guessing it might be a
newly-fledged version of the other one.

Does anyone have any better ideas?

Subject: Morning Whale Watch - 7/5/09
From: Steve Mirick <smirick(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 5 Jul 2009 4:20pm
Jane and I went on the morning whale watch out of Rye, NH hoping for a
repeat of the excitement of yesterday. We had a great show again today,
but we missed out on the jaegers, which were the avian highlight from
yesterday. Apparently, the huge swarm of gannets and terns (and
accompanying jaegers) near the Isles of Shoals has dispersed with the
strong westerly winds today and the passage of the front. Hopefully
they'll return. Still a great show with pockets of birds here and there
and our first Cory's Shearwaters of the year.
The course of the boat took us to an area which has been productive
recently down toward "Old" and "New" Scantum along the NH/MA state line
and just on the inner sides of Jeffrey's Ledge as shown below:
http://home.comcast.net/~smirick//whalewatch070509.jpg
Location: - Jeffrey's Ledge - NH
Observation date: - 7/5/09
Notes: - Morning Whale Watch on Granite State Whale Watch out of Rye
Harbor. With Jane, Mike Resch, Jason Lambert, Lauren Kras, and Al Maley.
Select list of birds deemed to be in NH waters only
(Similar, but fewer numbers were seen in MA waters)
------------------------------------------------------
Common Loon - 1 - Inside Isles of Shoals.
NORTHERN FULMAR - 3 - One dark morph. Fulmars are normally rather rare
in summer months offshore.
CORY'S SHEARWATER - 6 - Excellent views of a couple. Normally rare in
the Gulf of Maine, Cory's Shearwaters are having the 2nd good year in a
row offhshore.
Greater Shearwater - 81 - Most concentrated along NH/MA state line, but
also an isolated raft of 3 species of shearwaters further north.
Sooty Shearwater - 29
Wilson's Storm-Petrel - 292 - Most concentrated around an incoming gill
netter crossing from MA into NH waters.
Northern Gannet - 110 - The swarms of Gannets and terns present
yesterday around the Isles of Shoals appear to have dispersed. Still a
good number for the date. Evenly dispersed along the entire route.
Glossy Ibis - 1 - Flyover inside Isles of Shoals.
Also.......
Fin Whale - 7
Minke Whale - 4
Atlantic White-sided Dolphin - 25 (first for the boat this year)

I finally caught up to this male Orchard Oriole off the Beaver trail in
Southwest Park, not far from the open
water part of the Beaver Pond.

That's a male pine warbler, Cliff. The fledgling is getting yellow all over
and looks like a yellow warbler. Jim

Haven't been doing much birding the past 5 weeks or so. I decided to
take a drive across town today and enjoy the sun while I walked my dog.
Ended up taking a walk at the CVHS in Dover and saw one of the Osprey
carrying along a very large fish and also saw an adult Bald Eagle fly over.
It was heading toward Pickering Ponds. First time I've ever caught a glimpse
of a Bald Eagle there. Was hoping to see the American Kestrel but no luck.
For those who enjoy my photos of the man made birds, I went to the Rhode
Island National Guard Open House Air Show last Saturday, 06-27. Many great
photos are posted to my Flickr site. Hope you all stop by and check them
out! Be sure to click on the larger versions! Thanks!
