Subject: Western Kingbird - YES 11/21
From: lauren.kras(AT)gmail.com
Date: 21 Nov 2009 9:01am
Jason Lambert just called to report that the WESTERN KINGBIRD is present again
today. He reports that the bird is being very active but continues to use the
fence between pickering ponds and the Rochester WWTF.
The WWTF is closed on weekends but the area is accessible from Pickering Ponds.

Greetings all,
A good tally on this morning's survey: 33 species marks the highest total on
record for the last third of November.
Highlights were an imm Northern Shrike (only 2nd record) and a very late
Yellow-rumped Warbler (my latest ever on any of may various surveys). Also of
note were two Red-bellied Woodpeckers. But winter is definitely on its way, as
evidenced by declining totals for sparrows. These reflect the weekly counts
from early October to the present. By this point, Swamp, Chipping, and the
less common sparrows are long gone.
Song Sparrow: 28, 37, 35, 14, 12, 2, 1, 2
White-throated Sparrow: 83, 163, 54, 49, 50, 6, 4, 3
Dark-eyed Junco: 0, 13, 43, 88, 64, 69, 39, 54
Enjoy,
Pam Hunt

Subject: black vulture
From: david.h.arnold(AT)comcast.net

A black vulture was soaring over downtown Newmarket at about 11:40 AM this
morning. I see these guys by the hundreds every spring in Florida so it would be
hard for me to confuse it with a TV. At had all the classic black vulture
characteristics but I did see it in profile only.

Mostly ran errands today, alas, but did swing by North Hampton. White-fronted
Goose is still at Lamprey Homestead conservation area on Route 111 just east of
Runnymede Farm. I watched for about half-hour, and it mostly seemed just fine,
although a couple of times a Canada would hiss at it.
Also present, 6 Greater Yellowlegs.

Subject: NH Coast with a few photos (Great Horned Owl, Gadwall, etc)
From: Steve Mirick <smirick(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 21 Nov 2009 5:18pm
Still very few land birds around. Not a single Yellow-rump today (or
warbler of any kind), and very few sparrows in general despite a
moderate effort. Still a couple of birds of interest and a couple of
photos in link below:
Highlights:
Greater White-fronted Goose - 1 immature continues roadside along Rt.
111 in N. Hampton east of Runnymede Farm with 170 Canada Geese.
GADWALL - 1 female in Meadow Pond. (photo)
Green-winged Teal - 9 in Meadow Pond. 3 headless birds photographed.
Northern Pintail - 1 female in Meadow Pond
Red-throated Loon - 21 migrating in morning even though we spent
relatively little time searching offshore. They were pushed way
offshore with westerly winds.
Peregrine Falcon - 1 imm on electric pole along Rt. 286 in Seabrook.
(photo).
GREAT HORNED OWL - 1 off Island Path in Hampton. Perched in Willow and
nagged by crows. One of very few day time Great Horned Owls for me
along the immediate coastline. (photo)
Lesser Black-backed Gull - 2 adults including one swimming in Eel Pond
(photo) and another in cove north of science center at Odiorne. No
doubt Frosty, this is one of the only times I've seen him outside of his
radius (even slightly) of Frost Point!
Black Guillemot - 1 flyby off Seal Rocks in Rye.

Later in day in Newmarket............
Turkey Vulture - 12
Black Vulture - 0 (I'm now 0 for 7 on this bird!)

Lauren Kras, Jordan Mora and I joined up for a day of birding on the
coast. We don't have much that Steve didn't, but a few additions.
Common Goldeneye - 1 on Eel Pond (remarkably few Goldeneye have made
it to the coast!)
American Coot - 1-2 on Eel Pond
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE - 1 following a fishing boat well off of Straw Point.

Can someone tell me where the white fronted goose is on Runnymede
farm.
I've been there twice and no wfg.
I set up my spotting scope in the parking place.
Maybe it sees me and hides.
